Are you calling me Barney, or asking me if I like Barney?

I generally prefer rock, a bit on the harder side, but listen to almost everything to some extent (except for country). It's a tough sell to get me to listen to pop music though. My fiance has one of the BEP albums (the one with Hey Mama on it) and I couldn't stand it.

Wait till you listen to it for a month or so. I loved all of it at first, but now there are a lot of them I can not listen to "My Humps" being one of them. My favorite is still Gone Going.

Is that the CD that has that song that samples the old Lisa Lisa Cult Jam song "I Wonder if I Take you Home" and that song "Sally, That Girl"? I LOVE that song! I was riding to work the other day and when it came on the radio I started dancing in my car and a truck full of black guys started honking and waving at me!

too bad they used to be credible underground rap, but totally changed their sound and picked up that skank whore in order to make more money at the sacrifice of their artistry - the definition of sellout.

Apparently, 75% of their album is cover songs.

It's not a cover song. They just sampled part of "Sally, That Girl" and added it to this song.

Depends on the copyright holder. You have to pay a lump sum for the copyright, and then you pay rolyalities through the "Harry Fox Agency" which surmounts to about $.08 per album sold. So if they sell a 5 million copies, that's $400,000 to each person they sampled from.

Assuming they're on "full artist status" because of their last albums success, they (the entire group) is likely receiving anywhere from $1.60 - $2.00 per album. No more than that... 50 Cent and Eminem only make $1.90 per album...

So doing the math, if they used samples in 10 songs, and sold 5 million copies, that's $4 million that they'll pay out in royalties, which comes out of the Artists share, not the Record Label share. If they're making $2 per album, they've already cut their return from $10 Mil, to $6 Mil. That doesn't include production fees, recording fees, mastering fees, and lawyer fees....

When it comes down to it, the 4 members will likely split $2-$3 Mil between them, and be broke.

But don't you have to use a certain percentage of a song before you have to pay for it? They only use very small parts of these songs.

No, you can file copyright on a single note of a composition. Length or time of the sample has no bearings on the royalties. That's why Dr. Dre and Puffy get sued all the time.

Artists like myself, don't make enough noise on the soundscan charts to warrant licensing... I sampled Jim Croce, It's a Wonderful Life, Singin' in the Rain, and a few obscure recordings on my album. But I don't sell enough to even warrant the lawsuit, they'd pay more in lawyer fees than they'd get from the royalties.

Yeah. I caught on to a few samples in your album. Clever use of the songs.
