getting rid of resonator
wondering if there's a way i can get rid of it, put in a high flow cat that will still pass emissions, but not screw up the exhaust's sound in anyway. doesn't cutting out the resonator make it sound annoying?

If you remove the resonator on the stock system it will be quite a bit louder, but you should be fine passing inspection.

It will sound louder. You should get some small gains out of it also. Plus you have the trd exhaust.
i'm doing the same thing when i get my exhaust

Think about it this way: the trd exhaust only replaces the back section of the exhaust system. The stock cat and resonator are still there when you install a trd exhaust. I belive some people have claimed upto 14hp gain with the trd exhaust. Keep in mind the exhaust is still pretty stock as only the muffler and tip are replaced. When I designed a full exhaust for the gt, I dissected the stock resonator and muffler to find that the stock resonator is a perf core design. This is superior to a louver core that is restrictive and found in most resonators. The cars tone will change more than the volume, and there may be a little to be gained. If you still have the stock muffler I'd look at replaciing that first as that would give you more gains. You will pass inspection as the cat will not be modified by removing the resonator.

You will not pass inspection. Because the manual says nothing can be removed from the exhaust system only replaced with bettter flowing equipment. You will pass OBD2 but not visual inspection.

I said you wont pass visual inspection therefore there are some mechanics that wont pay attention to the resonator being missing. But in reality it isnt legal and will not pass in the eyes of a legit mechanic. Its in the manual it WILL NOT PASS!

You WILL pass inspection. Anything modified AFTER the cat has absolutley NOTHING to do with a visual inspection. If you look at a smog sheet, they have a checklist for a visual inspection and a stock resonator is NOT on there. Hell, for all that it matters my friends dsm recently passed smog with a full 3" exhaust off the turbo with a universal high flow cat completley ghettoized, soldered, hung on with coat hangers and passed with flying colors. They dont care what the exhaust looks like and whats on it, as long as the cat thats on their checklist is there, the car will pass visual.

Take it off! Sounds a lot better imho. I'm sure you will pass smog with no problems. The kazuma sounds sweeet without it also

You will pass smog but not visual inspection. I know this because I DID NOT. Prove to me the resonator is not on the list. I had to find somebody who would pass it illegally.

Don't take it off...it will shound like sh*t. Please, for the sake of everyone in your town/city/state, leave it on. And as said earlier, very little gains will be achieved. Take it off and you will just become another obvious target for the local cops.

A resonator is NOT part of the emissions system. I had to smog my car last year and they tried to fail me for a non functional check engine light....But wait...My car does not have a check engine light, and they never came with them. The guy showed me in his book of cars that my car was equipped with MIL. He told me either I had to go to a ref, or prove the car does not have a check engine light (he did not care if the car did not come with one.) I copied the entire smog checklist for my car out of my database and presented the proper information and passed because I had proof there was no check engine light. What does this have to do with the resonator not passing visual? Any smog station has a checklist for visual that they must check(EGR, MIL, EVAP, ect) a resonator is not on that list and never will be because it is not part of the emissions system. If you were failed beacause of a missing resonator than the person that failed you should be reported. A smog ref cannont fail you if your emissions are not modifed, removing a resonator is AFTER the cat and is not part of emissions. I smog cars all day long with full 3" aftermarket exhausts becuase there is only one thing that an exhaust system must comply to visually: the cat. |
