PERFECT CAI (Hybrid Aftermarket Intake/Stock Airbox Mod)
If your car is having bogging and hesitation problems and you have an aftermarket intake (cold air or short ram), this is the answer you've been looking for!
Reason For Bogging/Hesitation Aftermarket intakes use larger piping (usually 2.75" vs stock 2.5"). This is supposed to allow more airflow, but unfortunately, our mass airflow sensor (MAFS) is tuned to read air through a 2.5" pipe. Increasing the size of the pipe actually slows down the air speed, since our engines can only take in so much air. The lower air speed makes the MAFS think less air is coming into the engine. This results in the engine getting less gas than needed, making it run lean. This will cause the engine to bog at low RPMs, hesitate during normal driving RPMs, and reduce overall engine power output. It can even lead to check engine lights (CELs), with the code of P0171. Reason Why This Modification Works This modification replaces the aftermarket intake's MAFS mount with the stock mount. The piping inside the stock mount is 2.5", so it allows the MAFS to read the incoming air correctly and provide the engine with the proper amount of fuel. It combines the best characteristics of the stock airbox (proper airflow speed) and the aftermarket intake (low restriction airflow) to provide maximum power gain. Will My Intake Work With This Modification? Yes. This modification has been tested sucessfully on the AEM Gen 1 CAI/eBay CAI, the Injen short ram, and the RMM short ram. It will also work with the Injen CAI/APC Intimidator CAI, K&N CAI and short ram, and PHR CAI. As long as the intake's pipe has a constant diameter, this mod will work. The exception may be the Iceman intake, since its diameter continually changes over the length of the intake.INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS (shown on eBay CAI) Parts Required Stock airbox Aftermarket intake Flathead and Philips screwdrivers Power saw or Dremel Pipe cutter (optional) File (optional) Pliers Epoxy Power sander 80 grit sandpaper 600 grit wetsanding sandpaper Spray paint Knife or strong scissors 45 degree silicone coupler (optional) Straight silicone coupler (optional)

Well i got bored, and was tired of check engine lights with my injen sri. So i got on ebay and bought a CAI for 44 bux shipped. I spent about an hour choppin and refinishing my MAF tube, and about a half hour cuttin the new cai. Install took me about 3 hours or less, and im very happy with the results. No more check injen light, barely any bogging, and a bit more noticeable power in 1-3 gears! This mod is one of the best things ive done so far. I gotta give it up to Blue for figuring out this crazy little trick. Although i do need to get a little sound dampening for my wheel well, to block out water, and calm down the crazy loudness on the drivers side from the new cai. Now i just have to give it the test of time, and see how it all goes from here. Ill let ya's know!

It will be reading airflow at 2.25" dia. I just did this mod last week and I have to say that it does appear to improve driveability and power. My pulls have been much stronger since this mod and to answer Spikeman's previous question, no I have not had any CEL's nor have I ever. Nice work Bomber! |

Sorry to revive a dead thread, but I performed this mod in the early winter, and through a little swearing and patience I got it to fit right and look good. After driving it I could instantly tell that the hesitation and bogging was gone. My celi is actually a lot easier to drive around town, especially coming out of driveways and intersections. I would recommend this mod to anyone with a CAI or a SRI. I had the latter.

I started getting everything ready for this mod.. I don't have bogging problems or anything, just wanted to get rid of the CEL (Check Engine Light) I figured was being caused by the CIA. When I got the stock piece ready and put it up to the Injen CIA I have, I noticed with mine, they were the exact same size around.. Didn't they make a 2nd gen intake specifically for this problem? Just wanting to make sure because I don't think I need this mod.

CAI > Turbo

...It's CAI not CIA
and I don't think injen ever made a gen 2? that was AEM... it's the diameter in the center of the piping that you're worried about, i did this mod and it got red of my CEL and all the other problems with CAI/SRI's. |

i was going to do this mod, i cut the stuck airbox up and everythin and then went to put it on, and happened to notice it looks the same size as my C/A/I. I have a 2000 gt with the AEM dryflow cai. Im guesing this mod doesnt apply to this intake...

Great Mod!!! Thanks so much BB. I can really feel the difference and the bogging from 1-3k is gone. It took me a little while to get the exact amount of the CAI cut (3 different cuts) but I finally got it down and installed. Thanks

I installed a BOMZ CAI for a 2003 Celica GT. I am amazed at the sound and how crazy the engine sounds close to redline! You can feel the extra HP at low RPM and especially when the VVT-i kicks in! Im loving it... except the CEL. Now, i did notice alof o boggin at 1st but was quickly corrected after checking for vacume leaks.
I still noticed some hesitation and lag... and like others, Ive yet to mesure the difference in tubing size from the OEM to the CAI.... Im not 100% convinced this would resolve the issue. Wouldn't racing ECU not turn on the CEL? Quote:

Here's what you need to measure to find out: Should be at spec idle when measuring. If the voltage @ spec idle is below 1.1V, then the airflow measurement is off & you need to mod. Quote:

AMAZING MOD!! Great job BB!! No wonder they call it the BBMod. So far so good and it only took about 2 hours to make, install, and test! No more sluggish and no more check engine light. So far so good!!
**How did you end up mounting the CAI when you cut the mount off instead of letting it hang there?? thanks a lot!

Hey guys well i will have to say i have a celica VVTLI import i had a K&N SRI and the engine light was on since then i fitted a AEM CAI with a full custom system with de-cat and lan simulater and a apexi SAFC and few other little bits and bobs but since all this the lights on the dash are all off was all set up at weston performance and is now running 232.4bhp before all these things was 195.4 at wheels but then again this was a import but as i say the light is off but at the cost of almost 3000 pound
now i want to SC it witch means loosing the AEM CAI *LOL* |

Resetting Computer
Before buying my Celica I was active on the Saturnalia forums. This question came up often. When you install a CAI on a Saturn you can simply disconnect your battery for a few minutes. When you reconnect it there is a resetting of the computer which adjusts for the new air flow. Does this work with Toyotas? This is how we avoided the CEL coming on.

Anybody know what diameter the throttle body is? Its not the same as the stock piing(2.5")right? Is it 3"? I'm just not sure what size straight coupler to get...2.5 to 2.5 or 3 to 2.5. Thanks

Why don't they make these intakes with this in mind? Seems like a huge oversight to have to do this to stop the check engine light from coming on... Is there a CEL safe intake out there so you don't have to McGyver your intake like this?

What is used to seal the MAF sensor that is on the SRI. I understand the CAI because a part is removed but with
(for example) an Injen SRI has the bracket that the MAF sits and screws into what is used to plug and cover this?

So no one has come across an intake that simply doesn't throw a CEL from the factory? I can't believe no one makes one.

easy now...

has anyone done this with a SRI, if so, where would you mount the MAF sensor? If you mount it where the CAI does, the MAF sensor mounts in the bent on the SRI, and if you have a weapon R, then it would be mounting where the filter attaches.
Looking at the SRI intakes, it seems the MAF mounts right before the TB. Would this be OK? Any suggestions?
