mis-shift + CEL = ?
well, to start off, about 8 months ago, I mis-shifted my 5spd (2nd gear at 80mph). the car would not idle at all, and when i took it to get the CEL codes read, i got all 4 cylinders mis-firing, and idle control system malfunction. so.... i let the car sit. after a while it would start. and then it would idle. then eventually it would run and idle and it seemed fine, except for the damn CEL.
so about 1 1/2 weeks ago, the CEL was turned off and it's still off now. i'm confused. did the car fix itself?

seems like you bent the valves but I dunno why the cel would go away.
I'd take it in because thats definitely NOT a good thing.

How does he car drive now, is it like before you mis-downshifted?
I have seen strange things in my years of working on cars from stuff like that. for instance- once tore apart top end of eclipse for just that reason, when i got it apart all that happened was some of the valves were stuck open, which would lead you to believe bent, right? wrong, they were tested as perfectly straight by the machine shop, reinstalled them, car ran fine.
But bent valves are a very definite possibility in your case. These are interference engines.
It could also be a blown head gasket. Do you smell a sweet almost burnt caramel smell when it's running. that will screw up o2 readings, knock readings, hell almost everything. lol
Could be a ton of stuff, play it safe and get it checked(even more so if it isn't quite running right)

its running pretty much like it did before the mis-shift, with the exception that you can hear valve ticking. the car still pulls hard all through the powerband.

Have the compression checked and the coolant for hydrocarbons.
Low or leaking compression=bent valves
Hydrocarbons in the coolant=blown head gasket.

mysfire in all 4 cylinders following a miss shift = bent valves.
you need your head rebuilt. I'm suprised you kept driving on it like nothing happened.
