*Gauge Cluster LED Conversion Guide (Updated)

Celica 2000 and up. Gauge cluster LED conversion guide
by Dooly at LEDmod.com
aka Sean

Tools : Screw driver, fine point soldering iron, solder, tweezer
- All the tools can be purchased from Radioshack
LED can be purchase from www.LEDmod.com

- First, removing the gauge cluster by remove two screw on the gauge cluster cover

- Remove three screw that holding the gauge cluster

- Remove the two wire harness

- Slide out the gauge cluste to the side

- Remove the screws with circles on it

- This is what it looks like with white cover removed

- Taking apart the circuit board, two circle are is where needle motor is mounted, but pull it away from the side
- It will come off with little big of force
- Circuit board will flex, but that's no problem.

- Remove the LCD panel, it's little tricky.
- Slide the clips from the circuit board and push it out
- LCD panel has pins connected on the one side, but work from side to side and it will come off with little force

- This is how it looks like just the circuit board it self

- This is the LED location for the RPM/Tachometer on the left side

- This is the LED location for the Speedometer on the center

- This is the LED location for the LCD on the right side

- This is fine point soldering iron, you can use from 15w up to 40w
- For beginner, switchable 15w/30w soldering iron is good from Radioshack

- This is how you remove the stock LED and solder on new LED
- Follow the steps carefully
- Little practice with other old/broken electronic will help alot

- This is what new LED looks like after it's soldered on

- Now do rest of the LED just like what you did
- After done with soldering, just take the circuit board it self and test it on the car to see if all of them lights up.
- If some of them doesn't light up, just check if the solder is on properly and LED is on right direction
- Try flipping the LED direction will work

- Swap out the resistor for ONLY Blue, White, Green Color LED
- This will make the LED light up brighter, do no swap out for Red Color LED

- This is the time to change the needle color
- Remove the amber paint by nail polish remover(non-acetone), brake cleaner or razor blade to scrape it off
- Paint the needle color of your choice(Testor Paint works well from hobby store)
- If you want white needle, white-out works well

- Put everything back together except the clear cover
- Plus your new TRD Style Center Tach Gauge Face
- Put the gauge cluster back on the car and put 3 screw back on

- Follow the needle calibration guide

- If everything works, reverse the process

Enjoy!!

Any quetions email me at Sean@LEDmod.com

how big is a chance that a noob like me will f*ck it up?

edit:

Dooly, could you pm me with a price of a complete unit?
I'm from Holland, so sending you a replacement unit isn't really an option.
So please tell me what the costs are for the following:
1 gauge-unit with a set of white-led conversion. (faceplates not needed, will install my old ones (kph, not mph). and shipping to Holland (zipcode 3194KE)

Dooly, where does the light for the needle originate from? Is it housed in the motor? If it is, is it just white and the applied color to the needle is the only thing that changes it. I am asking because I want to do red gauges with white needles.

Needle light is shared from the speedo and tach LED..
Those clear plastic is light pipe, it guides the light from the gauge to the base of the needle..
That is the reason that you can't really have different needle color, unless you go with white LED conversion....
You can do white LED conversion and paint the needle different color...

There is extensive modification you can do to have red gauge with white needle...
Basically you have to install set fo white LED at the base of the needle/motor area..
There aren't much room there so you have to cut out and mount the LED some how...

Gotcha. Have you ever tried white led's with a red font gauge? How different does it look than a red font gauge with red leds?

One tip for you guys.

To remove the stock leds, the fastest and easiest way is to use two solders at the same time. Heat each side of the led with each solder and you will be able to lift it up right away.

How do you correctly paint the needle? I want to go white gauge with red needle

Strip the stock orange paint with some nail polish remover and a Q-tip and then repaint with some transparent glass paint, or if you want to be cheap, a red sharpie marker.

The thing is where to find that glass paint...

I think that with a red marker it will be too bright at night...

Just a quick question guys, I did the mod a few months ago, and don't get me wrong I am totally happy with it, props to you Dooly for making this mod guide.

just a question though, After doing the mod, as you all know, my tach is in the center and speedo is on the left, but it seems that when I get my RPM's up around 6-7k my speedo on the side starts to go up like the tach, i'll be going 60 and hit lift then all of a sudden it says i'm going 140 haha in line with my tach, I'll drop out of lift let the RPM's die down and my speedo drops to the correct reading.

I'm guessing its a loose connection on the back of the circut board maybe my solders came loose or somthing, my cuts through the motor points didn't go through enough or somthing, just wondering if anybody can suggest something else if they have done this conversion and have ran into the same issue

I ran into somthing like this and my tach was messed up for months until i stopped procrastinating and took it out and looked around. You know the motor points that you cut the legs off of, you need to make sure they are really tight around the leg that goes through them. Pull your tach and pinch those sides together really tight, so when your pushing your motors back on you have to press hard for the legs to go in, making a very good connection. Solved my problem really quick

Here is how they work and why it cause that problem...
Each two wire controls the half circle of needle travel..
I think you got the one half right but other half isn't cut properly.. it's keep sending the tach signal to the speedo motor..
Make sure you cut the circuit(copper foil) cleanly... you can use continuity using multimeter to check so that electricity doesn't flow..
Most people doesn't cut through the copper foil enough... once they gotten that right it always works...

Go through this guide again.. make sure to go through each step carefully..
Most of the time people go through the guide again and they find their mistakes....

Quick question

I'm gonna buy a GTS STICK soon, i did the gauges in my altima 98 and it was quite easy, but the celica seems to need soldering and lots of more stuff.
Do you have any service by which I could be able to send you the gauges of the gts and let you do the installation???
To be honest, I messed up the dash from my altima, had to bought a new one and then was able to install it even though its 1 million times easier than celica's. Therefore I don't wanna mess up the one from the gts.
Could I send you the gauges and let you do it? and if so, how much would you charge me?

It really is easy, it just takes patience. All you have to do is melt the solder holding the stock orange LEDs and then resolder the new ones on.

you going to the meet tomorrow in orlando? you could give it to me there to save yourself shipping at least one way. i'd need the LEDs you want to change to, the shipping money to return it to you, and about 20 bucks for my time.

On the first picture, it was converted to blue already...
But you just have to do what on this guide to make the LCD light up blue..

To make the gauges light up blue, you'll need one of the custom gauge face..
I only sell the custom guage face, not the whole gauge cluster....

hey dooly, i was wondering... how do u change the needle backlight color? I know you repaint the back of the needle to change the color of the needle itself, but do u add an extra LED near the needle motor or something? because when i see your write up, it shows that u have LED's all around the speedometer but none near the needle and when i see the video u have up on ur page with the celica gauges trurning red when it hits lift, it shows the tach needle having a white backlight which looks extremely badass. so i was just wondering if there is something extra that you have to add for that?

If you look at the clear plastic right behind the gauge face, that is used as light pipe to backlit the needle..
Gauge face and needle shares the same LED light...

The video you saw for color changing gauge face has little more custom work done then typical LED conversion...

You can do the LED conversion, but with stock gauge face you can't get the right color and it's dimmer....
That is because stock gauge face orange color, for example if you did blue LED conversion you'll get like dim purplish/bluish color..
For white LED it will be washed out orange color....

If you look at the bottom section of the guide, there is two picture shows which resistor you have to swap..

Has anyone changed their LEDs to red and kept the stock face? If so, I'd like to see pics!

Viewing the color red will make you angry eventually.... that's why the color isn't used often.

I've seen it on a firebird...and it got to me after awhile. I'm sure it'll do the same to you... unless you like that kind of thing.

yeah, u press buttons to adjust the strenght, no knobs there (just one, for the temperature -rotate it right -> higher temp rotate left -> lower temp and when you push it it gives you the outside temp.)

I haven't posted the LED conversion guide for Automatic Type Climate Control...
I do have the guide in my computer...
There was very low demand for it...
