Celica Header Idetification

There are 4 types of stock headers used on 7th Generation Celicas. 1 on the GT and 3 on the GTS. To clear up any confusion, here are they are plain as day. (in case anyone has a terminology bug up their butt, Header = exhaust manifold)

GT Header
The GT Header for the 1ZZ-FE remained unchanged from the introduction in the 2000 model year through the 2005 Model year:

Front of GT Header:

Back of GT Header:

GTS Header
The GTS header (2ZZ-GE engines) has been through 3 revisions. They were:
The Original Header - used from 2000 model year through January of 2003 Production
The Air Injection Blockoff Header - used from Feb 2003 production through April of 2003 Production
The Air Injection Header - definitely used in all of the 2004-2005 model year there MAY have been some used on late 2003 model year vehicles produced in May - July

Original GTS header - 2000-Early 2003
This header is no longer available as the part number has been superseeded by the Air Injection Blockoff header part number (which will bolt up to and work on a non air injection head)

Front of Original GTS Header:

Back of Original GTS Header:

GTS Air Blockoff Header - February 2003 - April 2003 Production
This Header MUST be used when using a new style Air Injection Head on a car not equipped with Air injection. This includes the 02/03 - 04/03 Production range as well as any vehicles that are repaired with a new cylinder head (new cylinder heads are now ONLY available with air injection and the non air injection head is no longer available.) Notice the bumps above the runners on the mating surface where the blockoffs have been added

Front of Air Injection Blockoff Header:

Back of Air Injection Blockoff Header:

GTS Air Injection Header
Starting in the 2004 Model year (or pissibly in late 2003 model year) the Air Injection System was added to improve cold start emissions by using an electric pump to blow fresh air into the exhaust stream to light off the catalyst more quickly. This system operates only when the vehicle is cold and remains dormant the rest of the time. This system is most easily identified by the large tube on the top of the header that wraps around the front of the timing chain cover

Its a new emissions system that was introduced at the end of 03. It has an electrical air pump that blows fresh air through the manifold into the head right into the path of the exhaust stream. It operates during cold starts when the air fuel ratio is very rich in order to help light off the catalytic converter faster and to prevent hydrocarbon loading of the cat. Its purely an emissions system - no performance benefit at all.

how does the air injection hook up inside of the header itself? do you have any pics showing where the inlet to the header tube is? what considerations do you have to take when porting a header with air injection?

Cool, I figured it would have to be emissions related. Thanks Boosted!

Jeez barber calm down bro - I will answer your questions - Its my 10th Anniversary today so I've had other things to do

Anyways porting is pretty much the same, I just have to be careful to plug off the air injection holed while i'm porting so I don't get a bunch of metal debris in there.

As for teh rest of it, iIf you need to know faster than I am telling you just subscribe to http://techinfo.toyota.com for a day and check out the engine section of the 2004 Celica New Car Features book

What a prick!

Boosted2.0, properly something you already know but here it is...

http://matrixowners.com/forums/Ported-02-G-T-S-Header-Into-My-03-X-R-S-t52376.html

Just so you know all '03 Matrix Xrs' do not have the air injection system, only '04 Xrs' and up .

Yeah I saw that the other day when I verified the exhaust manifold parts numbers - the Matrix got the air injection after the Celica did by a couple months.

I would imagine so - but I have not verified it personally.

its an 04 gts engine but everything is from a 00 so I dont need the air injection I just wanted to get a visual so I can brain storm what I might need to do before I get to work. the engine is already in and I cant get it certified untill I fix the header... it sticks out like a sore thumb and teh smog guys wont touch it. I was wondering if I could cut the tube close to the header and pinch it off or something so its out of sight...
