What is th Super Strut Suspension
I have never heard of this but while I was looking at Trial's coilovers they claimed that their coilovers were not for super strut models. They could be used on any celica but if you had one with the super strut option then you had to convert it to the normal strut set-up before using their coilovers. So, what the heck is the super strut option? I have never heard of this before.

The SS-II model was released I think only in Japan. SS being 'super strut.' Ours are not SS-II. Even my GT-S isn't, so if you get those Trial coilovers, LMK! I want them so bad! I might have to steal them from you Justin

LOL, I plan on getting something there Matt. I got a few things on my ride that need to be taken care of, suspension overhaul, brakes, etc. etc. I am also debating on whether or not to go widebody. I didn't really want to spend anymore money on this car but it is going to be awhile before I can get a new one, at least another 5 years since I am trying to start my business up. Anyways, because of that I am thinking of just renewing the celica by doing a widebody (custom), repaint of course with custom color and pearlescent job, all the suspension crap, brake upgrade, installing of newer model sunroof, etc. etc. etc. new wheels, you get the drill. Then again I look at it as all that being money that could go towards a new car LOL, so I can't make up my mind.

SS-I = GT
SS-II = GT-S SS-II w/Super Strut = N/A The Super Strut suspension was an option for the JDM GT-S. It was a completely different front suspension setup. The 6th gens had the SS-III which was the top of the line NA (GT4 was top of the line overall), and it had the Super Strut suspension, but the 7th gen didn't have a unique trim level for it.

The "super strut," as I recall, had a strut assembly where the base of the strut had another articulation arm that attached to the hub... whereas a "normal" strut, is mounted directly to the hub.
This added arm gave the front suspension a more aggressive camber change for a given bump, thereby making the super strut suspension react more like a double wishbone setup. The effect, of which, was a better handling celica. This suspension design was nothing new... I believe several manufacturers have similar setups... the one that comes to mind is Ford. In their overseas Focus, IIRC.

Neat-o. What would need to be done to have a SSII set up on a USDM Celi? Would it be worth the cost and would result in superior handling as compared to a decently tuned non-SSII suspension set-up?

Super Strut is awesome suspension - I have one. Handles very well. However, it requires a lot more attention to it. Have a lot of struts, arms, etc. Also, it have different front shocks (than GTS or regular SS-II). OEM price ~ $400 each. Only Tein (Super Special) and TRD (Sportivo) selling replacement for ~$500 each. That's quite expensive suspension.
P.s. "SS" in Japanese "SS-I","SS-II" - it's not Super Strut.

We have people doing SS -> McPherson conversions here (because SS too expensive). There are a lot of parts to replace. Here you go: McPherson: 1. http://www.japancats.ru/toyota/detai...2=&piid=110110 2. http://www.japancats.ru/toyota/detai...2=&piid=110106 Super Strut: 1. http://www.japancats.ru/toyota/detai...2=&piid=110111 2. http://www.japancats.ru/toyota/detai...2=&piid=110107 Enjoy

Reading Zima first post and how the SS does not stand for "Super Strut" I came to the conclusion that SS meant....yup you guessed it, "Super Slow"
![]() Those pictures that deltaB posted are quite helpful.

i don't know why but it just seems interesting to see what it really does, and handles like. if people are just throwing away their parts or selling the parts cheap i'd like to try it out.

The reason I was asking about this is because I was looking to get some C-One coilovers and it said that they were for the SS suspension only but if you look in the pics they look just like our normal set-up so I am confused.

hello Zima
I have 1998 Celica ST202 with SS-II suspension. I am looking for the ccomplete suspension set for both left and right. I have visited the TRD site and found that the part is discontinued. I want to know what are the modification to be done in order to change SS-II to Macpherson Strut Suspenion? Is it possible to just switch from SS-II to Macpherson suspension?? |

I thought the the superstrut difference between the normal was that it used an inverted double wishbone suspension in the front and rear?? compared to the mcpherson suspension in the front and normal wishbone suspension in the rear on the normal Celicas
