Progress on New flowbench

Since I talk about it a bunch I figured I would share the progress with you guys.

We started of with a design of our own based on a ton of research we did on commercially available benches and DIY benches. This was the first concept for the motor box which is designed to house 16 commercial grade motors from either central vacuum systems or industrial grade high capacity shop vacs.

After some more brainstorming and more consideration of the design measurements we decided to change it to reduce the total height and build this instead:

This is a pitot tube style bench - it uses a reference pressure and impact pressure in a tube of calibrated diameter to arrive at airflow.

Now here are some pictures of the flowbench progress. Its exciting to move from the design and fabrication of parts to the actual assembly stage. The frame was sandblasted last weekend and has been painted with 2 coats of rustoleum bare metal primer. The MDF panels will get KILZ oil based primer and then an oil based paint to prevent moisture intrusion.

Early fabrication:

Floors and Flapper Panels Installed:

Closeup of part of sliding valve assembly in pressure box:

Current state - Motor panels installed:

The blower box panels will all be held on by liquid nail and screws, or for the serviceable panels, bolts, washers, and silicone.

So why exactly did you change the base of the cabinet?

It was too tall. The motor boxes all need to be a certain height as did the distribution box at the top, and then we have all the plumbing comeing off of there. We also need clearance under the bottom of the box for intake / vented air. That pressure transfer chamber added an extra foot or so that we just couldn't afford due to the height of the ceiling in my garage.

It also gives us the flexibility to run just one bank of motors and completely idle the other bank with it sealed out of the equation, which will mostly be useful in finding a dead motor or a leak.

Cool stuff, I wish I was more of an engineer/calculus type person than a bio type...

You going to start testing on the 2zz head you got soon?

Yup - once I get the bench finished we will do a test head and the Lotus head. After that when I catch up with the manfold backlog I will probably do 2 more - one for turbo and one for NA with stock valvetrain. The turbo head I will probbaly send to Smaay or Jesse to test and the NA one I will worry about at the time.

Been wondering when you were going to bring this up agian, and I'm glad you did. I hope your prices for head porting and such will be alongside your great header pricing. I'm so pleased with your header and even the tx7 I got from you I know you wont let us down.

Well it won't be $150 if thats what your asking

It will be fair though - I base everything I do on how long something actually takes plain and simple. If it turns out it only takes 10 hours then its not going to cost very much compared to most places. If its 20 hours per head then I'll be in line with what you've seen out there already. If its 30 hours then I will be more expensive. We'll just have to wait and see.

There are other things besides cylinder head porting this can help with though. This bench is a monster - I will be able to flow test CAIs, air filters, intake manifolds, exhaust manifolds, throttle bodies, etc.

It will be done very soon - hopefully after this weekend all that will be left is to let the paint dry and then hook up all the pressure ports to the computer

Well the primer is on and the paint is on but DAMN oil based paint takes a long time to dry. Had to use it to seal against moisture though.

we designed and built the settling box last weekend (no steel frame - just MDF and 2x4s)

Hopefully this weekend we will be able to assemble it and get the plumbing finished. I have to go to the dyno with Swingfixer on Saturday though to tune his car.

Here are some updated pictures of the motor box with a bunch of motors hung on it. We have made more progress since this - 5 of the valves are fully installed and the other 4 are ready to go. The flappers are all installed and a couple more permanant panels have been mounted.

Heh! Yeah - we had casters for those legs too but one of them cracked. We made new ones though and the skateboard is back to gathering dust

Awesome progress! With everything that you're doing, you really do need more hours in your day!

That's a waste of a skateboard though...mine got ravaged up by the elements when my little sister left it outside...I wish I didn't stop practicing after I got the kickflip down .

Funny that you ask - we finished the bench about 1.5 hours ago. I'll be running the initial flow range calibrations tomorrow morning, and with some luck we will have some kind of a test fixture fabricated and be taking flow readings on a stock cylinder head tomorow afternoon. I'll post pics tomorrow or monday.

Its Finished!!!

We still have to mess with the hoses from the pitots to the FP1 a bit and troubleshoot a leak on the 3" range, but it works and works well!

Here are the final pictures:

Control valves for the pitots and static pickups

The flow ranges with the self averaging pitots and static pickups in them

The computer thats hooked to the FP1

The whole shootin match

wow. I would say it looks good if i knew exactly what it did, i've never heard of a flowbench. Can you pm me with a short explanation. But from the sounds of it it's important so good job

Very short explaination. It monitors how much air flows through various parts, head, TB, intake and exhaust manifolds. It helps determine where and how much material to remove for better flow (CFM). You may ruin the first few heads or manifolds till you see where to remove the metal, but you will learn where to remove the metal. You can't just hog out metal. You have to keep a good, smooth flow. An engine is a big air pump. The more air it flows, the more fuel you can add, the more power the engine will produce. Hope this helps, if you get real interested Google flow bench and read up on the art of using one.

An air flow bench is a device used for testing the internal aerodynamic qualities of an engine component and is related to the more familiar wind tunnel.

Used primarily for testing the intake and exhaust ports of cylinder heads of internal combustion engines. It is also used to test the flow capabilities of any component such as air filters, carburetors, manifolds or any other part that is required to flow gas. It is one of the primary tools of high performance engine builders and porting cylinder heads would be strictly hit or miss without it.

What they said

In its most simplified sense its a giant air pump with a computereized metering device that monitors airflow. The one we built can suck or flow in excess of 1000 CFM (Cubic feet of air per minute). To give you an idea, a 3" tube flows a bit over 700 CFM at 28" of vacuum (standard test pressure). So I can test CAIs, exhaust components, manifolds, throttle bodies, etc.

The way it works is you set the pressure you want to test at and measure flow through a component (I have a computer controlled pressure regulator). Then you modify that component (port it, or replace it with one of another hopefully superior design) and you test it under the same pressure, which will let you know how much the flow has increased.

You also have to pay attention to air speed as well as flow, which means using the flowbench in conjunction with a device called a pitot tube that is inserted into various areas of the item you are flow testing to test flow in a specific area. Since air is compressible it doesn't flow around bends evenly, and this data is very important for mapping where the bulk of the air is going through a component so you can pay attention to that area, as well as for the reason that if you kill airspeed off too much on at least the inlet to a head, you can wind up with poor fuel mixture with the air in the cylidner.
