scraping noise from wheels

I've recently noticed what sounds like rock or metal scraping against one another coming from i think my front driver-side wheel. It's sometimes noticeable just when driving, but really starts happening when i brake. It's not a constant sound, but comes intermittenly every half second or so.

I'm thinking it's a rock or something stuck in one of the brake pads, but i'm not too sure. Is there any good way to check this problem out without taking off my pads?

Sounds like its time for new pads. When was the last time you replaced them?
