**NEW** PPE Header Results

Well, last time we went to the dyno to check the gains with the PPE header we left pretty with the results. 8whp is pretty nice.... if it were the true gains of the header. The next day we continued to hear a slight leak that we had heard the night prior on the dyno, but ignored. Hold and behold, we went to check it out and this is what we found out....

The flex pipe shrunk for some reason to 1" in diameter from it;s original 2.5" diameter. That being fixed (removed it ) we went back to the see if it gained anymore and O'happy day it did. Here are the results...

12whp gain and 8 lbs torque . Test were done in a 2005 Corolla XRS with Injen CAI, PPE header, 2.5" Crush bent exhaust and decat. Both runs on the stock ECU, no tuning whatsoever.

So who wants another GB?

WTF...why would the flex pipe shrink?!?! is that going to be an issue for all of us who ordered this header? since you removed the flex pipe, isnt there a good chance that part of that header is going to crack?

oh thats some crazy gains!!

wtf kortik you've never had a problem befor. The flex pipe is a woven pipe of stainless steel that allows the exhuast some flex so there is less stress on the header.

if by crappy corolla header you are referring to the same header that is on the gts and the same header that, until ppe, nobody has been able to make one that makes more power than stock.... than yes the crappy corolla header

So would it be wise to weld a pipe in place of the flexpipe instead? i havent install the PPE header yet and dont want to have the same problem as you did Redliner.

Great results!!

But I think we're going to see more flex failures in the future...any one having a header that is that long and has stock engine mounts should worry about this.

You're best bet would be to get the Energy suspension urethane fillers in the OEM engine mounts.

All flexpipes will crack under excessive movement. Mine did, because I had worn out motor mounts on my MR2.

I thought the corolla's and matrix's had different manifolds than the celica's? Or maybe it was just the 1zz corollas/matrix's? Can someone back me up here?

The GT-S header is exactly the same as the XRS. The GT however has a much different design.

Also, it's quite normal for flex pipes to shrink down about half of an inch in the middle of the flex section.

He's had that exhaust from like 2 years ago and it's worked fine for him, just because he bought a PPE header doesn't mean he will go out a make a mandrel bent exhaust just to please you.

About the flex pipe issue, I believe this is just a freak one of a kind. We stumble unto this when we started hearing a leak and it was coming from the flex pipe. We decided to take out and check it out and it had shrunk. So if anyone got a slight leak from there flex pipe might want to take it out and replace with another flex pipe. Also remember this things are covered under warranty from PPE.

Good gains!!!
However, 3 more WHP and like 1.5 more torque on a dyno can be considered as a non conclusive gain imo, especially on different days (I am comparing with the earlier dyno with PPE made by redliner). Still, good gains everywhere which makes it a good header so far. It sounds promising! I hope the gains are still there with PFC and build head ..

Intake manifold are definitely not the same for 2zz corolla/matrix vs 2zz celica. I don't know about the header though, but it seems like it is the same ...

Intake manifolds ARE the same. The only thing that changes is that in the Matrix/Corolla the TB flange is angled upwards and in the Celica GTS it's straight. Same performance, just the way the TB is angled because of clearance issues in the Matrix/Corolla chassis.

All 2zz headers are the same. This includes the Celica, Matrix, and Corolla.

Very interesting. I'll have to check this as well.

If it happens, would the best solution be to weld in a piece of solid pipe or replace with another flex section.

Would something that sounds like a slight hiss from the back be a symptiom of this -- just noticed this tonight, but I'm not sure if it's just my fuel pump, which is quite noisy.

A properly matched intake manifold would unlock alot of power with the PPE header. You could probably reach 200whp with just I/IM/H/E. People underestimate the IM.

If it works then thats great, I would just think that a mandrel bent exhaust would make better gains vs a crush bent.

Then, the vibe gt must have a different intake manifold compared to the Matrix/corolla ... cause the one I got with my used engine has definitely more differences then just an angle of TB ... The size of the reservoir can't compare.

Pictures please because all the Vibe GT's 2zz's Ive seen are all the same as the another 2zz IM. Some other differences from the Matrix/Corolla and the Celica IM (especially the 2000-2002 ones) is the material used (thinner and smoother surface on the Celica IM's) and the Corolla/Matrix IM are a 2-piece designed unlike the early Celica pieces which are 1 piece.

12 whp gains un-tuned is really nice, I really want one now... I especially like the fact that the power is gained through the entire powerband even in the mid-range where it really needs it.

Yeah, they pissed me off so much I decided not to bother.

After all, I have one, so why do I care if a bunch of fvckheads driving an overpriced rollerskate get to have one too?

I will post pix when I have a chance to have a look at it. I'll check again, I might have made a mistake, but I am pretty sure the size are different .. It is definitely the 2 parts design.

back to the topic! That thing would look nice under my car

Corolla XRS uses the same header as the Celica GTS. Its the 1ZZ Corolla that has the phenominal turd of a header.

The matrix 1ZZ yes. The XRS was a GTS header and a metal intake

Most if not all of Toyotas cars use plastic intake manifolds now.

Wow, so that douche Vortex still scoffs, eh?

Yeah, they pissed me off so much I decided not to bother.

I'm pretty much done with good deeds. Too much hassle and I tend to receive more fvck you's than thanks.

After all, I have one, so why do I care if a bunch of fvckheads driving an overpriced rollerskate get to have one too?
That A$$ twit has always been like that....on every god damn new thread he likes to bash at it....dont let him get to you....he probably has a hard time getting it up or had a hard time in high school and is now hitting at everything that moves.

What you did was for the community, of course some of us will be A holes but the majority is thankful, unfortunalty those jerks spout off a bunch of bull while the rest just sit by the wayside. For every jerk there is probably 20 thankful people its just harder to tell.

^^^ Thanks -- but, let's just say it'll be a while before I feel motivated to start up another community-minded project.

Hopefully other creative folks will be inspired by the sucess of the PPE header project and develop some new items... (now, what might I know but not be telling... )

Hey, Red, was the initial run done with the cat in place and then removed for the ppe header (so, both mods done at the same time), or was it 12whp gained from JUST the header onto an already decatted motor?

Hey you're lucky - all it cost you was a little time and a little stress.

I know I'm being overly whiny -- but in my defense, these just aren't the sorts of projects I usually take on. The development of car parts, even as the "project coordinator", just aint my balliwick.

And dealing with customers --- urgh... not for me either.

More power to those who have the patience for such things. I prefer to study people rather than cater to their wishes.

(Whining concludes)

12whp from just installing the header. The car was with a de-cat on the baseline run.
