Weird Rattling noise at 1800-2000 rpms
I can't pinpoint where it's at but i only hear it when i'm around that rpm range (1800-2000) in any gear, i'll hear it. It's either coming from the exhaust system or from under the hood. No hangers are rusted and nothing appears to be lose. Anyone have any ideas. Someone told me it might be the cat going bad but that doesn't make sense.
????
thanks

there's a few possibilities here, but I have the same problem which is in the 2k rpm range. the heatshield bolts were loose. tightened them up and sound was gone

It does it in any gear, does it do it when stationary too? Try the heatshields first see if any is loose. Other than that, around 1800 rpm is where a worn VVT-i camgear can also make some rattling noise.

It'll do it in neutral too and stationary if i rev to that rpm range. I've also cruised in neutral down one of the most pot-hole infested roads in my city and didn't anything
If it is the camgear is that an important/expensive fix?

If it's the camgear it is important. If you can do the work yourself it will set you back about $110 for a new camgear. I still think towards heatshields first though. From there you can check for other things that might cause rattles such is A/C pipes, shiftcables. have you tried having someone rev to 1800 while you listen in the engine bay? I'd do that, sometimes helps in locating the source.

I'll bet you it's the header heatshield. The bracket on mine was broken and rattling around those rpm's against the bolts. Have someone rev your car for you while you're standing watching that heatshield. I'll almost guarantee that's what it is.

^You might have spun crank bearings. Mine did the same back when i had a GT. It would make a click sound around 3-3500k rpms then go away after that. If you hold the rpms at 3-3500k does it stay?

sty09 i agree with the others. IMO i think you have a loose heatshield for your header.

I checked the heatshield first, it was a little loose but the sound still didn't disappear after i tightened it, so I had some rev the car while i looked around, and i think its coming from the muffler.

You have stock exhaust still? Might be the back resonator rattling against the right rear towhook. You'll have to check the heatshields over the cat and first resonator too, those can also be loose. Alternately you can have someone rev the car while you try holding the exhaust under tension (don't get yourself burned though) and see if that has any effect one the sound.

i had that same problem, guess what it was. there is a spring located on the front side of the flange where the back half of the exhaust is coupled together. the spring was completely rusted and compressed. it was just rattling back and forth on the bolt holding the exhaust together. take a look, that just might be the problem.
you can either replace the spring with a toyota one which runs about 20 bucks, or find something comparable at ACE or home depot. hope this is your issue, because its annoying as hell, but the least expensive problem youll ever come across.

yeah i have the same problem except it only makes the sound around 2500-3000rpm while driving. if its just at idle it doens't make any noise. i've checked the heatshields and they are tight, it could be the vvt gear. it couldn't be the exhaust, already replaced the gasket and still using stock.

that's a worn crankshaft. looks like its common problem with 00-02 GT celicas same as oil consumption.
I think and oil problem and this weird sound are connected.
i have the same problem, was talking to my mechanic and he said either to replace crankshaft or forget about it.

Normal. It's differential chatter.

If that were the case then your engine wouldn't last long after this diagnosis.

mine rattles from 2000-2500 rpm due to worn intake camshaft.... getting new one shipped..... use thicker oil does help to eliminate the problem slightly....
