In Japanese automotive press circles, some well educated guesses are being thrown around about the new Nissan Fuga with the appearance of a test car spotted in Arizona recently. The test car was seen sporting camouflage covering its entire body, but that didn’t stop Holiday Auto (HA) from producing some CG images of what they expect the Fuga to look like.

HA say that the upcoming Fuga will borrow heavily from the Nissan Essence concept car as shown at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. With pronounced and flowing front and rear guards, the design should incorporate many design cues from the Essence, particularly at the rear where the trunk shut lines and tail lights intersect, as well as incorporating a similar molded trunk spoiler. So too the headlights may vary only slightly from the Essence concept car and the side profile may even incorporate the Essence concept car’s unusual side window sill detail.

That doesn't look nearly as good as the Essence concept.

2011 Infiniti M Makes Virtual Debut

Infiniti today provided an advanced look at the all-new 2011 Infiniti M performance luxury sedan at the 59th Annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. This is the third generation of Infiniti's popular M and the first to be sold across all of Infiniti's 32 markets around the world, including Western Europe.

Like the current Infiniti M, the next-generation design will be offered with V8 and V6 engines. The 2011 M models will be designated the Infiniti M56 and Infiniti M37 respectively, reflecting their more powerful, larger displacement engines. The M56 V8 is expected to offer more than 400 horsepower. For Western Europe, the M56 will be replaced by a V6 performance diesel.

The 2011 Infiniti M also features a completely redesigned body, with authentic sports sedan proportions and evocative new styling with a low front end and deeply sculpted fenders inspired by the Infiniti Essence concept car. The new M interior promises to be pure Infiniti, highlighted by the use of innovative materials, an advanced climate control system, superior audio and an enhanced quality feel. Despite improved performance from the new engine lineup, fuel consumption will be reduced.

In addition, the 2011 M will continue Infiniti's technology innovation leadership with a blind spot intervention system. This industry-first system is designed to help alert the driver if another vehicle is detected in an adjacent lane during an intended lane change, and then help assist the driver in returning the vehicle toward the center of the original lane of travel.

The 2011 Infiniti M, which is scheduled to go on sale across the world starting from spring 2010, was revealed through a unique "video mapping" process – in which a "virtual M" was created on a 3D form. It is the world's first "virtual only" (no physical vehicle) automotive application of this cutting-edge technology. The 2011 Infiniti M will make its official public debut later this year.

yeahp! i fell in love with the M when we rented one for a family trip down to USC. it was a '06 M35 sport, and that thing was one of the nicest cars i've ever sat in, to my liking. so much space, and it drives as fast as it looks. an M would be my next ideal car to get after my celica.

The interior of the new one looks pretty similar to the old, from what I recall. They've just boosted the engines up a bit.

2011 Infiniti M56 First Drive

Infiniti's suggestive model naming convention remains intact with the new M series, and in the 2011 Infiniti M56 this spells a 5.6-liter V8 that produces 420 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque according to Nissan's preliminary numbers.

If you've been paying attention, this represents an increase of 1.1 liters and nearly 100 hp compared to the erstwhile M45's 4.5-liter V8. Lesser M37 models are equipped with the familiar VQ37 3.7-liter V6, churning out 327 hp (24 hp more than the current V6-powered M) and 269 lb-ft of torque.

The lighter V6 in the nose of the M37 lends the chassis even more spryness, and the adaptive behavior of the seven-speed transmission as paired to the V6 is simply brilliant. We'd go so far as to say that in this stage of development, the M37x we drove — even in all-wheel-drive guise — gets the nod over the M56 as the more engaging drive.

More space, speed, shape and cutting-edge technology. It turns out we don't mind a little Zevolution when it comes to luxury sedans. In fact, we embrace it.

Far more refined was an M37x prototype, powered by a 327-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 with 269 pound-feet of torque, more or less identical to that found under the hood of the G37 sedan, and fitted with all-wheel drive (as is the M56x). As with its smaller FM-platform mate, the V-6 and its accompanying seven-speed automatic are a smart match. The M37’s lower weight and delightfully natural steering—especially compared with the M56 Sport’s four-wheel-steering system that varies the steering ratio and can turn the rear wheels in the same direction as the fronts by as much as one degree—made it our favorite by far.

So have the A6 and 5-series been “served”? We’ll have to wait for a drive in the final product before we can say for certain whether the M is a compelling alternative. But based on what we experienced with the M37, we’d say the 535i and the A6 3.0T might want to start checking their mirrors.

I absolutely loved this car until the new 5 series came out. Lexus needs to step up their game with the next GS.

First Drive: 2011 Infiniti M

When choosing an M, you might think that the V-6’s more-than-sufficient power would render it the easy choice, but there’s one problem: even the M’s standard active noise cancellation system can’t come close to drowning out the vviibbrraattiioonnss coming from the VQ-series V-6. Once the world’s standard for V-6 engines, the VQ is now near the bottom where NVH is concerned. Singing alongside the glass-smooth in-line sixes and quiet, balanced-shafted V-6s in this segment, the VQ sounds and feels out of place. And since the V-8 carries only the slightest of fuel-economy penalties (only 1 or 2 mpg), we think it’s the M to have.

The Infiniti M56 is one top performer among a rarefied set of highly capable competitors but so, too, was its predecessor. However, success at the dealership, like triumph on the Idol stage, ultimately becomes a contest of popularity rather than just raw talent. Maybe this time, the M’s more dramatic styling will finally earn it the public recognition and votes that it deserves.

Hitting dealerships in mid-March, the new M addresses many of the complaints with the old one. In a segment owned by the Mercedes-Benz E-class, however, Infiniti still has its work cut out to gain ground. The new model is an excellent start.

Enthusiasts will appreciate the 2011 S trims' steering wheel-mounted magnesium shift paddles, a feature absent in the 2010 model. Part of the aforementioned sport package, the paddles allow for manual gear changes of the seven-speed, which also features downshift rev matching. The larger Akebono brakes, another upgrade of the sport pack, offer up progressive pedal feel and stout performance, and the M's steering proved quick, linear, and communicative.A new four-mode (standard, eco, sport, snow) Infiniti Drive system comes standard, and Infiniti's Safety Shield adds the world's first blind-spot intervention system (selective braking intervenes to pull the car back into its lane) to lane-departure warning, lane-departure prevention, intelligent cruise control, and distance control assist safety systems.

Whether all of these improvements are enough to set the new M apart from the 2011 BMW 5 Series, not to mention the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Jaguar XF, et al, remains to be seen. We'll reserve that judgment until we have the opportunity to drive them back-to-back. Regardless, with the arrival of the M, this segment has become more competitive than ever.

2011 Infiniti M: First Drive

So Infiniti's created a luxurious four-door that looks gorgeous, goes fast and doesn't have much space in the back. But unlike the Jaguar XF, we think the M is going to prove fully competitive with the German master race of luxury sedans. While we won't know for certain until we've had the chance to drive all three back to back, our initial impression is that the M offers a much sportier drive and is much faster than the E-class, sacrificing interior space in the process. We're guessing it's going to be as fast as the 2011 535i and 550i and, with that rear-wheel steering, might even have the edge on handling. Infiniti suddenly has our attention.

It's a better car than its predecessor.
