I need a new Engine I think
Anyone have info on a new (used/rebuilt) engine - the best price I am seeing is about 4K - am I getting ripped off? - pics of the issue are in my gallery.
I need info fast as I am kind of over a barrel with things and in short order I have to say go-ahead on the mech's qoute... wondering if I can get hard data on prices and get them to come down a bit.
Thanks very much appreciated.

If I am getting ripped off? how much should it be and where can I find the info - can't take a blanket statement of "getting ripped off", ad link below showed only 1 engine for 9,000.00!! - I heard it should be about 2900.00 for a rebuilt engine... but I can't find officially that price...
Hopefully I can find a link/document that says - this is what they sell for and I can show that to the mech and get them to come down on price.

I would search the boards here, and 2-way or GSboek can add.
I am certain a rebuild is less than that quote, or you can find a used one cheap as well.

take your car away from the mechanic. go to a different one. engine prices vary if you buy it yourself (like from a junk yard or auto dismantler). if you buy it from a mechanic, of course they will charge more. they charge any price they want. 9000 for 1 engine is more than going to a toyota dealership!

The 9000.00 was on the link above here for 1-800-toyota parts, for a GT engine - not what I call a deal.
The dealership is asking - 4000.00 out the door with a rebuilt engine and install, tax and all, I have until tomorrow to make that call, which I guess is the best I am going to get on it... other Mechs where 6-8K... but I don't know alot about where to look or check for info... crisis point in life is taking alot of time, and this is one issue I didn't need stacked on top.
So seeking the best data I can and see if I can make sure this is the best deal or if not I can try to re-nego the qoute down a bit.

Go somewhere else.
You can find a go low mileage engine for half that. Install is not hard you just need the tools.

I have looked around, and I don't have a bay or tools - I have to use a mechanic or a dealer unless someone else has that to offer up - I am 1000+ miles from home, car broke down... and I need it fixed to get back.
if you don't have specifics - site, link to part, exact cost, this doesn't help me with the place, and being I am on foot now - shopping around w/o a phone or car is a major hurtle... looking around is limited to web, and when someone can drive me or loan me a phone use.
and I have one day to choose to get this car fixed at that price or I am starting back over again.... which ain't an option...

looks like you spun a rod bearing. rebuild will cost you about 600 in parts and 1000 in labor. brand new shortblock will cost about 1600 and 1000 in labor. your head is just fine, just clean it out good incase any shaving got up there.

So 4300.00 at a dealership - that took the pictures is way too much then? - they want to drop a rebuilt engine in it and I don't have that kind of cash unless I just literally give them everything I own and have in cash and then I am still broke...
How do I get your opinion to them in a form that makes them change the numbers - and all?

That is not just a spun rod bearing. The engine threw a rod, that's the rod cap down there in the pan, all bent out of shape. You need a complete engine. On ebay they usually go for $1800-2300. A dealership typically goes by the book when it comes to calculating costs so if the 4K includes the engine it's not entirely unthinkable for a dealership. I'd say find an engine and a good mechanic elsewhere to put it in.

I have the engine for $1,200 + shipping. Shipping will run about $250-300.

wait... a dealership want to install a rebuilt engine? who rebuilt it? Toyota? That sounds so fishy to me.
even if the rod hurt the block, the head is probably just fine, just check it for flattness when you take it off. also look at the valves and top of the pistons to see if they smacked each other

You could be right of course, but I don't like his chances of finding the head to be still good. I speak of experience on that same Nr.4 cylinder no less:
Judging by the contents of the oil pan he may have well ruined the head too.

Great info guys - that will help alot, a friend of a friend could possible put it in... I am going to link this thread and the engine link to him... and if you have an Engine also that is double good going! I think we is on to something here, and yea I think the dealership might still be running a tad expensive... but maybe that will work them down also.
All around this is pretty good stuff, if you want too you can skype me at my address:
ndivalenti@hotmail.com - both email and skype, thanks for everything so far!

That was the engine my car came with originally, that was before I bought it though. Threw a rod at 54K miles, the likely culprit being a misshift by one of the previous owners.
