they are making at least 1 more of these concepts now. Thats a very good sign that this car, not this version, will make it into production too.

They need to do with this car what Dodge did with the Viper: Bring out the production version looking just like the concept.

Pricing will be interesting. It's obviously more extreme looking than most cars out so I can't tell where they will price it. 60k 370z
80k alfa 4c, 120k exige, 140k Cayman, 190k gtr.
Australian prices above.

Update!

Toyota FT-1
Quote:

Front 3/4 View

1 The blunt center evokes thoughts of the classic Cord 810’s “coffin nose”—and the Panoz Le Mans cars from a decade or more ago.

2 An awful lot of scoopin’ goin’ on in this front-end design: big holes on either side of the central nacelle and good-size ones cooling the front tires, apparently.

3 Triple round lamps recall Jean-Paul Oyono’s Alfa Romeo design study for Zagato, later picked up by Giorgetto Giugiaro for his Alfa Romeo Brera and other Alfas.

4 Fake air-deflecting blades are all the rage among stylists right now, but these can’t do anything real; they’re solid to the body and just add drag.

5 Handsome huge wheels are not very race-car-like, generating far too much turbulence.

6 The door skins are exceptionally convoluted and become an impressive sculpture all by themselves if removed from the car.

7 So what’s behind these huge holes that needs cooling? Radiators? Then why the huge holes up front? Terrific styling, questionable design.

8 A particularly nice detail is the glass-to-glass joint outside the A-pillar, carrying a tint all the way around the sides.

9 Double-bubble roof is again a sort of must-have cliché, from Abarth to Zagato, with Corvette, Mazda, and others riding along.

10 Transparent covers for engine compartments are getting to be standard on high-level sports cars. Nice for bystanders, but one wonders about keeping them clean.

Rear 3/4 View

11 Very small outlet for so much air scooped in up front. There’s no question that hot air has to get out, and this is probably not big enough.

12 These ribs are pure styling, Hunter admitted, but TRD says it might help push air toward the center and the gigantic retractable wing.

13 Yep, have to have a fuel filler as a design element. But for Le Mans, it ought to be on the right-hand side of the car . . .

14 The surface between this sharp line and the backlight is a wing mounted on four struts (presumably hydraulic) that lift and tilt the panel.

15 These squared-up corners clash more than a little with the rounded spoiler, body, and fender cross-sections through the wheels and really don’t make sense.

16 Bulbous surround for the exhaust pipes evoke 1950s “jet pod” details on show cars. Exhaust tips are cut at an angle, as though pointing outward.

17 Another nonfunctional air-deflector blade, again glued to the surface behind it so no air can pass between it and the body. But cool looking, right?

18 This sow-belly sagging curve recalls some BMW concept cars and the Z3. It doesn’t appear to do anything useful, but again, it looks serious.

19 The moderately tight radius running from the bottom of the front outlet to the top of the rear inlet gives some definition to the body side, and, of course, the convolutions beneath it strengthen the door panel.

Interior View

20 The pedal assembly is a work of beauty, all precision-machined. The bottom hinging is slightly out of the past, but it worked well for many of the world’s best cars.

21 The feeling of a single-seat cockpit for the driver is emphasized by the metallic section that rises from the central tunnel and continues on the door.

22 The head-up display panel is configured like an old-time racing windscreen, a nice, rather poetic touch.

23 A clever and useful indicator in the steering-wheel rim tells what gear you’re in and how quickly you’re approaching the redline. Surprisingly, it’s not at all distracting.

24 The seats aren’t racing-car light but are very beautiful in execution.

I was expecting a bit more from Robert Cumberford. Some of his conclusions about the design are questionable (no pun intended) to say the least.

Nobody is complaining about the same features on the LFA. Cooling both up front and in the back, with a rear transaxle. If the FT-1 has the same setup and combines a Turbo engine with hybrid components then it's not a questionable design at all.

Really? Did he have nothing better to say? That's why we have Windex. Remove the panel and clean it on both sides.

Who says all the air in the front comes out at the fenders.

There's more but I'll leave it at these three.

The Best Cars & Coffee Ever?
http://www.speedhunters.com/2014/06/...enter-the-ft-1
Quote:
Enter The FT-1

After making my way through the giant crowd around this mystery vehicle, I was amazed to find out that it was nothing other than Toyota’s FT-1 Concept.

Cars & Coffee has become such an established meeting spot for car enthusiasts that manufacturers regularly bring out concepts and prototypes to judge the audience reaction.

The crowd at C&C is completely different from the one you’ll find at big auto shows, so it’s clear that Toyota is really aiming for the hearts of enthusiasts with this one. They were even letting people sit in it.

This was my first chance to see the FT-1 in person, and I have to say that it’s simply stunning.

There seemed to be many others sharing in my excitement too, and long after most of the parking lot had emptied, the FT-1 was still surrounded with inquisitive spectators. Production for this car absolutely needs to happen.

So there you have it. Just another Saturday morning in Orange County…

For those who were there, or even those who just went through the coverage, what do you think? Is this the best single day at Cars & Coffee ever? Don’t forget to check out the bonus images for more evidence for my argument.

New version of FT-1 concept?

.

Color scheme looks similar to the FT-86 G sports concept.

Do A Double Take with Second Stunning Toyota FT-1 Sports Car Concept
Quote:
-Saddle Leather Interior Communicates Premium, Sporty Feel
-Superhero Inspiration in Performance Leather and Details
-Ultra High-Performance Race Version Coming Virtually to Gran Turismo® 6

Proof that its beauty lies on the inside and out, Toyota revealed today a second interior styling and exterior color for an upscale interpretation of its sensational FT-1 sports car concept. Developed by Calty Design Research in Newport Beach, California, the concept vehicle’s graphite exterior paint and light, saddle-colored leather went on display for the first time at the Gordon McCall’s Motorworks Revival gala held on California’s Monterey Peninsula.

The original FT-1 concept ignited sports car enthusiasts and the automotive world with its January debut at the North American International Auto Show. Labeled the spiritual pace car for the new direction of Toyota Global Design, the muscular, curved exterior builds on Toyota’s rich sports coupe heritage dating back to the 2000GT, Celica, Supra, MR2 and most recently Scion FR-S. That first vehicle stunned in a bold red, while this second FT-1 impresses with sophisticated graphite. Both share the deeply sculpted intakes and outlets that support its track-ready nature and the dramatic lines seemingly shaped by the wind. It’s a look that gets the heart racing.

The color of the upscale leather changes between the first and second FT-1 vehicles, and the visual difference is striking. The first car was dominated by bold, masculine black that keeps the driver focused on the road, while red painted edges and raw metals provide intriguing accents. In the second, the natural leather on the seat is supple with an all-natural grain, giving it an authentic appeal. The painted edges that are red in the first concept are now subtly blended brown in the second. The intention is to bring in a more sophisticated feel and authenticity through color choice, showcasing the versatility of the FT-1 sports car concept. Enthusiasts who desire a more pure high-performance experience might choose the black-red pairing, while others may desire the premium, athletic feel of the saddle leather.

“From the start of the FT-1 project, we wanted the driver to have a feeling of flow while at the wheel – to be able to focus on the road and nothing else,” said Sellene Lee, the Calty creative designer who proposed both color concepts. “In the color studio we help create the atmosphere of the vehicle, and our aim was to ensure everything supported the driver through efficient choices. The saddle leather maintains that same ‘in the zone’ driving intention, while bringing in a more premium feeling.”

Superhero Inspiration for the Interior

Sellene Lee drew inspiration for the FT-1 interior from the modern, high-tech performance materials used for today’s superhero costumes. A movie poster drew her attention to the modern shift from past heroes’ bright tights and colors to today’s performance fabrics and function. To achieve the FT-1’s advanced-looking, intricately detailed interior, Sellene Lee and the team compared leather thicknesses, grain sizes and textures to find the perfect combination. Raised metal mesh provides ventilation for the seats while lending a more textural, bold effect that beautifully matches with the metal accents. A dimensional embossed pattern on the instrument panel leather brings in a 3-D, technical look.

“From color and trim standpoint in the FT-1, there was a laser-like focus on staying true to function,” said Wendy Lee, studio chief designer at Calty. “This project was very special, as the FT-1 stands apart in its performance-driven, authentic purpose.”

Beyond her superhero performance material concept, Sellene Lee moved away from the typical stitching or piping edge treatment found in many vehicle interiors. The painted red edges on the welded leather and painted brown edges on the second FT-1 were inspired by high-end leather bags she found in an upscale department store. When drivers sit in FT-1, they can feel the difference in materials, textures and color choices that resulted from the team’s work.

Double the Fun in Gran Turismo 6

This September, two new versions of the FT-1 will be available for download virtually inside Gran Turismo 6 (GT6), the latest iteration of the best-selling racing franchise exclusively on PlayStation®3. Like the red FT-1 introduced in January, the graphite FT-1 concept roars onto the Gran Turismo 6 racetrack as a downloadable vehicle for a limited time. Additionally, in celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Gran Turismo series, Calty has also designed an ultra high-performance race version of the FT-1 that inside the game is called the FT-1 “Vision GT.” This high-powered version interprets what a full-race FT-1 might achieve on the track. See how the FT-1 Vision GT came to life by watching this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uuXFyCHp59w

The GT6 played an important role in helping key executives (including Toyota President Akio Toyoda) better experience the FT-1 concept prior to building the vehicle. Both virtual versions capture the same excitement, passion and performance the physical FT-1 vehicles inspire in those who see them.

This is What the New Toyota Supra Could Look Like

Quote:
It’s no secret that a brand new Toyota sports car, almost certainly called the Supra, will make its debut in the near future, but exactly when it will arrive and how it will look are still unknown.

Working with digital artist Tobias Büttner, this is what AutoGuide.com believes the Supra’s successor will look like, drawing inspiration from the FT-1 Concept.

Spy photographers have recently caught what appears to be the production design of the Supra testing, giving us an idea of the proportions and size for the upcoming sports car. Expect a sweeping body with attractive curves, while up front large air intakes will help keep whatever powerplant nice and cool. The two strongest powerplant rumors suggest that either a turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine from BMW or a turbocharged V6 from Lexus will provide motivation.

The prototype Toyota has been testing is heavily camouflaged, but the latest spy photos give a hint at what the rear tail light design will be. It’s still unclear when Toyota intends to debut the new Supra, but it will likely come sometime after the new BMW Z5, which will be built on the same platform jointly developed by both automakers.

Toyota Supra Sheds Some Camo to Reveal More of Coupe’s Design

Quote:
The Toyota Supra has been caught on camera conducting winter testing.

The upcoming new sports car from the Japanese automaker is a sister car to the BMW Z5, which spy photographers also recently snapped photos of. And like the BMW Z5, Toyota’s Supra has dropped a little bit of camouflage to show off some more of its production body, which is looking sportier than ever. It is believed the BMW Z5 will only be available as a roadster, while the Supra will exclusively be offered as a coupe.

The latest set of photos show the Supra’s stylish lines with short overhangs and large air intakes in the front bumper, hinting at some serious performance under the hood. We also get a better look at how the rear tail lights will shape out with the cutouts exposed, but they’re still not the real deal underneath all the camouflage.

Expect both four- and six-cylinder engines to power the Toyota Supra, borrowed from BMW. But it’s also likely that Toyota will drop some of its electrified powertrain to make it a hybrid, as spy photographers noted some prototypes sound like they were operating in an all-electric mode.

Toyota to Show Supra Concept in October
Quote:
Japan’s signature auto show, the Tokyo auto show, was a must-see extravaganza of the country’s future sports-car ideas and eccentric concept cars throughout the 1990s. Then, as the Shanghai and Beijing auto shows grew in prominence and Korean cars started eating into Japan’s global market share, the Tokyo event lost its luster, dropping to second-tier status on the international calendar of car shows. And there it has stayed for the past decade. (It doesn’t help that the show is held only every other year.) But that won’t be the case in 2017, in large part because of one debut: the Toyota Supra concept.

The Supra concept leads a show-car trio from Toyota that also will include, according to the Japanese magazine Best Car, Toyota’s S-FR and Corolla GTI concepts. We first saw the next-generation Supra’s design direction when the company unveiled its FT-1 concept in January 2014, and the final product will take strong styling hints from that car, as the rendering published here shows. The final design is a collaboration between Toyota’s headquarters in Toyota City and the company’s Calty studio, located in California.

Co-developed with BMW and using the same rear-wheel-drive platform as the upcoming Z5, we can expect to see the Supra powered by Toyota’s own 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four and a flagship 340-hp turbo 3.0-liter V-6 married to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. A 2.5-liter hybrid is expected to join the lineup a year after the launch in late 2018. Although still a concept, the Tokyo car is described as very close to production.

The BMW Z5, on the other hand, will employ the German company’s turbocharged inline-four and straight-six powerplants and incorporate special lightweight carbon-fiber technology borrowed from the i3 and i8. It’s slated for a Frankfurt auto show debut in September.

No, nothing that I would except for a legendary name like Supra. I also suspect that it would be disappointingly low powered.

Toyota Supra Rendering Comes With FT-1 Influences
Quote:
Based on spy shots that emerged over the past few months, these digital images were posted on the SupraMKV forums showing the sports car with design influences from the FT-1 Concept on both ends along with a double-bubble roof.

We'll soon see how close or far off the artist is from the real Supra, as Toyota reportedly plans to preview the production car with a concept at this year's Tokyo Auto Show in October.

Toyota Supra Spied Up Close Revealing More Details

Quote:
Spy photographers have managed to get up close and personal with the new Toyota Supra.

Unfortunately the Supra is still wearing plenty of camouflage, but this time we get detailed photos of the tail lights that slightly resemble the previous Supra’s units with round housings. It’s still hard to pick out details on the upcoming sports car, but we will finally get the full picture when it bows at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show this October.

Riding on a platform that’s the result of a collaboration between BMW and Toyota, the new Supra will only be offered as a coupe while the BMW Z5 will be a convertible.

It’s still unclear what powertrain Toyota will use on its Supra, but it’s possible the Japanese automaker will turn to BMW’s turbocharged engines. If not, expect to see a turbocharged V6 from Toyota that may be further boosted with electrification.
