From the front, im getting an s2000 vibe. Almost as if toyota took the front

end design from the next gen S2000, since honda cancelled it.

Love the chops! You can really see how much the FT-HS concept inspired the FT-86 concept in white

Genesis is in a different class. Unless you mean the 2.0t, If Toyota gets this right, and when I mean right, I mean 90% true to a segment that died long ago. Which had these 3 characteristics- Lightweight, Handling, & enough HP to utilize the excellent chassis. I'm not talking 240sx era, I am talking about the 70s Japanese sport compact cars, Celica/Rx3/Corolla/510. There is no longer an 'entry level' RWD Compact car. Every car from the old has now grown into a larger segment, almost GT status. The Genesis almost brought this dead genre back to life but missed it. Toyota CAN nail it. If they give a sh!t.

It looks sensational. Together with boxer engine I sure hope it will sounds as good.

I do think if it goes well, there will be STi version (turbo). Or maybe the Subaru version will be turbo and Toyota will be n/a.

Just when I thought the FT-86 concept was weak........this thing has less horsepower than a Ford Probe four banger........the FT-86's engine doesn't sound much better than a TC......

The horsepower and other figures like its curb weight have yet to be detailed. The whole premise of this car has been to be affordable, compact and light-weight. Just like the original. It is a successor of sorts.

Somebody on NASIOC transposed an STi over the FT-86.

Well we don't know what the power of the engine will be, for the time being the press thought its the 2.0 litre boxer N/A which is yes weak hp. But a preview from the GT5 shows an engine code called C-45 Boxer. So this is not the same 2.0 litre you get in Impreza ( I think it's called EJ20).

Plus, if this car is to be the spiritual succesor of AE86 it must be able to do one thing and be really good at it: drifiting. So there should be ample power and torque to carry the weight. Enough to make it slide like a champ.

Furthermore the man behind this project is the boss himself Mr Toyoda, the grandson of the founder of Toyota; a well known petrol head. He was influental to get Lexus LF-A into production (a car which was forever delayed). He even raced it on the 24 hour race.

So with this sort of CEO behind the wheel, we Toyota fan should be happy. At least he is trying his best to bring back good old Toyota affordable sports car back. If there is any hope to see another affordable Toyota sports car then this is it.

Still 2 years to go until we see it on the road, so time to save up and hope for the best.

Toyota goes sporty with FT-86
Quote:
“Sports cars have to be red, but we wanted a new red,” chief engineer Tetsuya Tada said. “So we came up with shoujyouhi red, the traditional red color of a Japanese monkey's” backside.

Toyota and Fuji Heavy plan to start producing a sporty car in late 2011.

Toyota will be responsible for most of the engineering. Fuji Heavy will supply the horizontally opposed engine and manufacture the car at a Subaru plant.

Aren't all Subaru cars AWD?

It will have to have a new NA boxer engine. The current 170hp NA boxer won't cut it. I'd guess it will get a high revving 2.0L with 200hp. If the car weighs 2500lb, then 200hp gives it about the same power to weight ratio as the 3229lb 265hp WRX.

In theory it's essentially the same except with direct injection -- those are a PITA to modify relative to port injection engines... the tech is still fairly new to tuners.

Modifying them is not hard. Tuning is harder though.

But it seems that companies like Cobb & Vishnu already have a grasp of it.

Direct Injection is a great thing, hell, look at the gains found with simple bolt-ons on a 3.6 Caddy CTS

That was just with a Corsa Exhaust & an Intake. Granted, not all DI engines will see exactly the same increases as this one, but fairly close.

^^^ Cool, thanks!

So Cobb already has user friendly engine management for DI engines? Is there another DI fuel pump option besides the pricey APR ones?

Oh -- forgot to respond to this. I know it looks a bit like a "C", but that first character is actually most likely a "D", and the engine is really badged as a "D-4S".

D-4S is the code for the new Toyota direct injection system the motor is supposed to be getting.

Hey -- I just noticed that the D-4S system involves a combo of DI and PI -- that's interesting, because it suggests you could leave the DI alone, and just upgrade the regular injectors to accomodate power mods.

Neat-o.

http://www2.toyota.co.jp/en/tech/env...rtrain/engine/

And given D-4S tech, some decent power might be extracted from the otherwise lackluster performance of the N/A 2.0 engine

Taken from the article from this website about Toyota Direct Injection:
http://wardsautoworld.com/ar/auto_story_behind_warss/

"...Yerace is coy about the potential of future boosting. “Turbocharging is very, very complimentary to DI,” he says..."

Sounds good to me.

i want one. if it comes to the US, and is actually decently affordable, it may be the first car i buy brand new. i'd do a lot to own this, so long as it isn't a pig...but i'm pretty sure the whole idea was for it not to be.

In theory, with tuning and DI, Toyota could easily massage the motor to 170 - 190 crank (right around the GT-S... hmmm...). There's a few tuners out there who have gotten into this ballpark the current EJ20 model.

Haven't heard whether or not the new DI engine will have a better flowing head, but if so, then something approaching 200 crank is at least possible.

If not, based on what little I've benn able to learn about mods for that motor, I see a small roots blower or turbo being quite do-able even with stock internals.

In theory, it should weigh right around the 7th gen, or perhaps a bit more. Given RWD, even if it is a little heavier and has about the same power, it should still be a bit quicker off the line. Plus, it will have nearly as much torque as power, making it a much more balanced road car than the GT-S.

I would say that a healthy medium sized turbo would work perfectly. With Direct Injection the amount of fuel actually reaching the combustion chamber is much more precise than that of a Port-FI system. I see DI a step forward, similar to the evolution from Carburators to Injection, its just a much more accurate way to meter fuel into the cylinder.

As for Toyota being able to muster up ~180hp. It should be a breeze. If NA DI has anything to show us, it is that it is now easier to achieve 100hp per liter. For example- the new 458 Italia(126.67hp/ltr), 997 GT3(107.63hp/ltr) and the 09+ Cayman S(94.12hp/ltr). The latter 2 have boxer layouts. So there really isnt anything holding Toyota back from designing a well performing engine. I am expecting to see 200-210hp out of the 2.5ltr NA Boxer engine. But why do I still predict less than 100hp per liter? because its Toyota we are talking about here. They WILL find a way to fvck it up and they WILL find a way to promote it as 'Green'.

Given that their D-4S system uses both PI and DI, they should be able to to keep the output high and the emissions low, so I'm hopeful for at least 170-190 crank with plenty of room to grow from either FI or bolt-ons before anything breaks or the fuel system is maxed.

That said, there will NOT be any 300+ whp FT-86's on the road without a built or different engine -- the N/A EJ20 will shatter like a glass at high power levels from what I've read.

Still, a car that handles really well, weighs about as much as the 7th gen, and has around 200 hp AND that much (or more) torque powering the rear wheels will be a hell of fun little road car.

It's been awhile since everyone is thrilled by new Toyota model.

It's a good sign.
