What’s wrong with the Ferrari 458 Italia?
Quote:
We’re posing this question not because we think that there’s something mysteriously wrong with this car, but because it seems that just about every waking day that we open our eyes and log on to the Internet, we come across another news story of a Ferrari 458 Italia catching fire or getting involved in some kind of accident.

In the past week alone, we’ve reported three models of Ferrari’s new sports car each meeting untimely demises – one caught fire at London’s Heathrow Airport, one crashed into a tree in Maranello, and another one suffered the same fate in the UK.

Today, we’re once again burdened with the same depressing news: another Ferrari 458 Italia suffering another meltdown.

This time, the scene is in America – Costa Mesa, California, to be exact – where the first 458 Italia in the country was burned down to a crisp as a result of the engine catching fire. This doesn’t trouble us anymore, actually. What really boggles our minds is that since the middle of May when the first reported crash of the 458 Italia happened, there have been 9 separate incidents of the car crashing or getting burned. To put that in perspective, that’s one car every 10 days.

So excuse us if we think that there might be some higher power at work that doesn’t seem to be too fascinated with the car like the rest of us. The whole trend is completely perplexing and certainly lacks of any concrete explanation.

Really.

Ferrari 458 Italia gets involved in another car crash
Quote:
And if you have been keeping tabs on the Ferrari 458 Italia recently, then you wouldn’t be the least bit remiss when you start associating that famous – or infamous – tenet with the Italian supercar.

You see, over the past few days, 458 Italias from all over the world have crashed and/or burned down more times than Lindsay Lohan has had tequila shots. The figures, unfortunate as they may be, speak for themselves. In the past three months, nine models have already been sent to the heap yard and this latest one, which happened in the Czech Republic, pushes the total to ten. Only this week, we’ve reported on four other incidents and with this crash, that’s five reported incidents of the new Ferrari supercar burning down or crashing in a heap.

This recent case, though, may be the most frustrating of them all because this car was as brand new as a shiny new pair of fresh-out-of-the-box Air Jordans. With only 300 kilometers – that’s a little less than the distance from New York City to Baltimore, Maryland – on its odometer, the owner just got his car fresh from the dealership when the crash occurred. That’s about the worst imaginable way to waste a supercar of the 458 Italia’s stature.

Then again, at the rate it’s going, we have no idea how many more of these unfortunate incidents are going to happen in the future.

This car is cursed.

The fire is ridiculous though, the entire back of the car pretty much melts away. Not your normal car fire.

Boy and I thought end of the week wasn't a conservative estimate. The sooner a recall the better. It might just beat VW to the Firefergnugen title.

Good question. I'm thinking it needs a scoop like the Celica to cool things down between the firewall and the engine.

Ferrari investigates 458 Italia fires
Quote:
Ferrari is investigating three vehicle fires concerning its 458 Italia models, although it is stressing other accidents involving the supercar could be the result of driver error.

Some 10 458s have been involved in fires or accidents this year with one caught up in a storage facility blaze at London Heathrow airport.

"It is important to differentiate between what is a vehicle fire and outside factors and I would include driver error," a Ferrari UK spokesman told just-auto.

"Six have been incidents where it potentially could be the driver or other factors. I am not in a position to comment on the vehicle fires and all we can say is we are taking it obviously very seriously."

The fires occurred in three different countries with the Italian manufacturer now investigating each incident.

Ferrari offers driving training courses at various locations around the world including Italy, North America, Canada and China.

Officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show last September the latest addition to the Italian manufacturer’s stable of supercars has become the ultimate boy’s toy for motoring millionaires around the world.

But now a string of accidents and a number of fires involving the cars has left some of the owners wondering if the

Apparently Garmin issued a recall on over a million of their little GPS units because they would start fires....any idea if they were an option in the Italia? lol

On a side note, these numbers sound really high when you consider the low volume sales Ferrari's have. Five camry's blowing up is one thing (0.00000001%) but 5 ferraris? That's got to be at least in the single digits.

Ferrari 458 Italia GTS rendered
Quote:
Despite previous rumors suggesting the Spider version would be offered with a fabric roof, it seems that the future 458 Italia Spider model will actually be getting a glass roof that flips upright electrically and disappears behind the seats. This is being done to ensure the car will be even more comfortable.

Ferrari explains 458 fires
Quote:
Ferrari North Europe has officially explained the fault that has caused five of the very earliest examples of its 458 supercar to catch fire.

"When the car is driven to high exhaust temperatures, in hot ambient temperatures, the adhesive used in the wheelarch assemblies can overheat and allow the rear wheel housing heat shields to move around. In extreme cases, the glue can begin to smoke and even catch fire," a Ferrari spokesperson told Autocar.

"It would only be a problem on cars driven very hard, and has only affected a handful of the 1248 458 Italias we've delivered so far – none in the UK,” our source confirmed.

Ferrari claims that the problem has been made to look more serious than it should because of unfortunate timing and innaccurate reporting. A new 458 was written off because of a warehouse fire recently, and others have been crashed, the firm says, causing some areas of the media to suggest the car is 'jinxed'.

Ferrari will recall all of the 458s delivered so far to fit new wheelarch liners, which will be attached more securely. It will also be replacing any cars that have been damaged as a result of the problem. All new 458s built now that Ferrari’s Maranello plant has re-opened after the summer shutdown will be rectified before they leave the factory.
Ferrari recalls every 458 Italia built so far
Quote:
Voluntary safety recall begins to modify 458s to prevent fire risk.

After completing its investigations into the fires which affected a number of 458 Italias, Ferrari has issued a voluntary safety recall to get modifications carried out to all 458s which have been built so far.

The campaign covers all cars built so far, up until the end of July. As the factory was shut in August, so no cars were made in that month, this will affect 1,248 cars.

Dealers are calling or emailing clients so the modification can be made to the wheelarch and heatshield assembly. Letters are also being sent.

Adhesive used in the wheelarch assembly has been found to be liable to melt at high temperatures, deforming the wheelarch which can then fall against the exhaust. If the car is being driven hard in places with a high ambient temperature, there is also a risk that the adhesive can catch fire.

The recall will see the adhesive used in the assembly replaced by mechanical fasteners.

Owners of the five cars which hit the headlines because of fire damage will be given a brand new replacement 458 free of charge, as long as the fire was caused by the adhesive issue.

1:8 scale replica of Ferrari 458 Italia costs $5,000
Quote:
The Ferrari 458 Italia would have been Ferrari’s next great supercar if not for a problem that has forced the company to recall the vehicle. But despite the problems that the 458 comes in, it hasn’t stopped Amalgam Fine Model Cars from releasing a 1:8 scale replica of the supercar.

The scale model, which was built with the input of no less than seven-time F1 world champion, Michael Schumacher, is an intricate rendition of the real-life supercar – minus the adhesive problems, we hope – down to the car’s supremely detailed interior and overall look.

The models are available in three colors – red, yellow, and black – and according to Amalgam, can be personalized to a customer’s individual specifications. So, if you don’t have the money to purchase the real deal – not that you should given the cars are currently being recalled – you can scoop up this scale model that comes with a staggering price tag of $5,000.

That aftermarket tuning company destroyed the look of the 458. They made it into a Lamborghini, which to many Ferrari fan-boys(such as me), is the anti-christ.

The 458 had jaw dropping appeal before with its swooping lines and gorgeous curves. This company made it look like an extra from a poor rip off of Transformers.

Just my opinion.

the camera is shaking quite a bit... I don't blame him, though. Fapping and filming that car is common side effect.

Update!

Ferrari 458 Italia burns down in Brazil
Quote:
Just when you thought that we’ve seen the last of all those burning Ferrari 458 Italias, we wake up to the unsettling news that the ‘458 Curse’ has struck again.

Reports are saying that the incident happened in Sao Paulo, Brazil – that place is getting a lot of news lately – and while details are limited as of the moment, you only need to look at these photos to come to the conclusion that the 458 Italia is not getting the kind of news it was expecting when it was released a year ago.

I thought this issue was resolved.

It's either an old one that didn't go through the recall or what they thought was the issue really isn't and the recall didn't fix anything.

BTW...I still think the 355 sounds better, but maybe it's just me.

They all sound amazing.

I like the 599 GTO a lot. Can't really pick a favorite.

F50 is the best sounding one IMO.

Honorable mentions go to the 355, 512BB & 275GTB/4

Discussing which ferrari sounds best is like arguing who would sound better in bed between Playboy Playmates.
