2012 Honda Civic / 2015 Type R

Rumormill: 2012 Honda Civic details circulate
Quote:
According to an article in Mag-X (via Temple of VTEC), Honda is hard at work wrapping up the design for the next-gen Civic that's expected to debut in 2011 as a 2012 model. As is customary from Honda, the Japanese, European and North American markets are all expected to get their own unique versions of the popular Civic, with Americans getting their preferred sedan and coupe body styles and the other countries each receiving differing takes on the hatchback theme.

As you would expect, there will be a hybrid version of the 2012 Civic, and it's again slated to get a 1.5-liter gasoline-powered engine mated to Honda's Integrated Motor Assist technology. This power plant will reportedly be shared with the upcoming CR-Z hybrid hatchback where it will be available with either an automatic CVT transmission or six-speed manual.

I'll comment when there's an actual concept car.

Update!

Honda delays Civic redesign
Quote:
Honda's redesigned Civic will not arrive until 2011, well past the typical five-year product cadence that would have landed the next-generation subcompact in dealer showrooms this fall.

Changing market conditions and tougher fuel economy and emissions regulations affected the development of the upcoming Civic, John Mendel, American Honda Motor Co.'s executive vice president, said in an interview.

"In general, we are not changing cycles," he said. "We change vehicles as need be. The ability to do something based on more current information is better than waiting a full model cycle. Some of that is being able to have the opportunity to change [based on] what you see happening in the marketplace."
Do what you got to do.

If the next generation civic gains ANY weight from the previous generation.... it is dead to me forever.

Update!

Spy Shots: 2012 Honda Civic
Quote:
Back in May, our intrepid spy shooters managed to snap off a series of images showing the next-gen European Honda Civic hiding in plain sight under an amalgam of ill-fitting current-gen bodywork. The latest set of spy photos seen here prove that Honda's little compact hatchback is progressing along rather nicely.

Unlike previous spy photos, it's clear that the car being tested is wearing its new bodywork... though it's obviously obscured as much as possible with funky matte black panels with strategically placed cutouts for doors, lights and glass. In any case, we can see a clear hatchback body design, as you would expect for the European market, along with an overtly wedge-like profile.

It's very prius like. The hood is too round, reminds me of a Yaris type car.

Prediction: it's gonna suck.

You could thank the EU for that. The E.U. requires the front and hood to be "pedestrian safe" in case of a head on collision, hence increase egg shape of cars as of late.

A lot of the new safety standards increases weight of the car. It's extremely stupidly difficult to follow government regulations of decreasing gas consumption while increase safety w/ weight. It's like "this is a fuel efficient HEAVY car." Doesn't work that way. I mean, those old skoo civics get 40+ MPG because of it's 1.6L engine AND being barely 2300lbs. Extra 500lbs does increase a lot of load to small engines.

Now if we could get hydrogen hybrids cheaply, then that's a different story. =P

Yup, pretty much summed it up there.

Personally I say to hell with safety features, they only increase the number of sloppy, indecisive, and downright horrible drivers on the road.

This is why I love old cars.

My 944 doesn't have power steering, cupholders, TC, DSC etc - its got ABS.

My Boxster doesn't have cupholders or any electronic stability, but it does have power steering and ABS.

Going from the Boxster into almost any other car makes the newer car feel totally numb, yet going from the 944 S into the Boxster makes driving the Boxster feel like I'm wearing a condom. Power steering really kills feedback and steering feel.

The newer and more luxurious the features, the more the car dies in my opinion.

I also prefer older cars. As for the new[esque] civics, the front is thin and stout, and the rear is big and clunky-looking. Much like the vague body silhouette on these spy shots. To me, the civic died in like, 2000.

I like the current (not new) Civic SI. It's like modernizing the late 90s version of the Civic SI. It handles and feels better, too.

The name Civic still lives, but it isn't the little zippy car we once knew. Just like most Americans, average civic is getting bigger and heavier.

Update!

Honda Civic Hatch Prototype with Full Hybrid System Snagged Testing
Quote:
According to our man with the long lens, the two prototype Civics "left the traffic lights in complete silence", which points to a full hybrid set up with the ability to run on electric power only.

The next generation of the Civic is due for release in 2011 or 2012 the latest. Aside from the hybrid model with gasoline-electric technology which could be offered in Europe in both hatchback and sedan forms, Honda has also confirmed the development of a smaller displacement turbo diesel engine that will fit right under the current 2.2-liter i-DTEC unit.

That's not a civic, honda needs to kill the name since they are going to kill the ride. From the side it's just as ugly as the X6.

Well, it's the current Euro Civic body, which has me a bit puzzled, why bother with different body panel colors, it only gives away the testbed status more.

EDIT: Here's a pic.

I don't know, I've seen some pretty butt that would be offended by that. Probably the ugliest Civic ever.

This has happened across the entire Honda line not just the Civic. Honda introduced the Fit and the City as the new introductory Honda car. The Fit is more like the pre 2000 civic.

Also I'm confused about your statement about you not liking the "new" civic Si when a concept hasn't even been introduced yet? Current information coming out of the rumor mil is that the new Civic Si will be smaller than the current Si and receive the TSX K24 and go back to the independent rear suspension. Just rumors of course.

the car has a kammback - its better for fuel efficiency - that's why the CR-Z, Insight and Prius are shaped the way they are.

It's not, but the back seat is like half that of the Celica, so in effect it is a two-seater.

HAM probably rethought themselves knowing that there wouldn't be nearly enough room to even squeeze your average American back there.

Sadly this is true. I remember the days when finding fat people was actually kinda hard to do. This past weekend I would say more than 1/2 were visibly over weight/obese.

Also new civic doesn't look sexy at all.

I think it is more then that around me.

I know looks are to the eye of the beholder, I just can't find any civics that are sexy looking. Just don't like the curves.

Spy Shots: 2012 Honda Civic Sedan
Quote:
Once again we've got spy shots of the 2012 Honda Civic. This time we're seeing a four-door sedan version we'll see in the U.S. as opposed to the four-door hatch that seemingly only enthusiasts want.

This next-generation Civic will be smaller than the current Civic, though that's hard to gauge from these photos. We can see is the new small window a-la the Fit, immediately behind the A-pillar; a strong kink in the C-pillar; a sweeping character line on the lower panels and a more pronounced beltline. And while we have no shots of the interior-- yet-- we can see through the window that some manner of over / under gauges remain just like the current Civic and the Honda CR-Z.

Rumors stated Honda originally wanted to make the Civic larger, but as you can see from the photos, the overall size of the 2012 Civic will remain largely unchanged.

While the camouflage is pretty heavy, we can see peeks at a new grille and headlights. The front end looks more upright overall as well. The doors also have some fresh character lines.

While the current Civic has a 1.8L 4-cylinder, rumors are floating around that the base motor may get bumped to 2.0L.

Thankfully, we hear the "Si" models will continue. Watch for production of the new Civic to start in the Spring or Summer of 2011.

oh wow the SI models will continue huh?

That car was barely competitive when it came out (it was basically an RSX-S with an LSD and a ****tier rear suspension, which was cutting edge in 2002).

Now it can't hold a candle to any other sport compacts out there.

SER Spec V is a piece of ****, you're right.

GTI whips major ass - reflash = 270 hp/300+ ft lbs, plus the DSG in those things is insanely good.

Update!

Spy Photos: 2012 Honda Civic Coupe
Quote:
And now we have the unavoidable 2012 Honda Civic Coupe. As you can see, the kinked C-pillar treatment from the sedan carries over as does the strong beltline.

What we get more of (after the jump) is the new, more upright and angular face of the 2012 Civic Coupe and a look at some production-spec wheels rolling on Michelin Pilot Hx MxM4 tires. For those of you paying close enough attention, those are the stock tires available for the 2010 Honda Civic Si. So while we're not going out on that limb... But, big wheels, correct tires, more prominent nose and rear disc brakes. We very well could be looking at the 2012 Honda Civic Si.

No word on powertrain options, but as this car remained small for fuel economy reasons, expecting a HP boost could lead to disappointment.

We're talking stock! I know about their damn reflash and freaken 80-90 gain in torque again I leave you with

Also the front a rear is looking more like a MMC although I did notice the windshield is not at as steep of an angle as before. Reminds me a little bit of a 350Z

alright well, stock for stock . . . . I chose the SI over the GTI because the SI handled better, had a better shifter, wasn't quite as fast or luxurious, but was $5000 cheaper.

Yeah but luxurious... did you really like those god awful seats?

Update!

2012 Honda Civic Interior
Quote:
What we see here, despite a new look, is the same-ol' same ol' from Honda. Split-level dash with the lower portion dominated by a large tachometer, an upper level with speedometer, trip computer, etc.

While the formula is what we're used to, the overall look here is blockier, and the tach looks much easier to read and the single-zone climate and stereo appear even more canted towards the driver. The wheel, too, is different. It still appears to keep the same, sculpted shape of the outgoing Civic, but the buttons--especially that circular one on the right-- are different.

I like that right off the bat. I hate the current Civic's interior with a passion.

I love the driver oriented center stack. Its very Supra-esque.

The seats are one of the big reasons we went with the SI.

BMW has been doing that since the 70s.

Update!

2012 Honda Civic sedan spied almost naked
Quote:
As you can see in the spy video, the front and rear fascias are updated; a new grille and bumper appear up front, while out back, all-new taillamps will be the most distinguishing visual element on the 2012 car. The overall profile of the Honda Civic sedan is clearly a carryover, however.

Likewise, the interior has been mildly tweaked with a new steering wheel and some updated trim panels, but it's basically window dressing over the passenger cabin recent Civic owners are familiar with.

I'm honestly disappointed. Honda has been cracking out some ugly designs lately.
