From Jalopnik

Yesterday we showed you a concept sketch of an alleged coupe to be made by a Subaru-Toyota partnership. Scratch the "alleged" as we now have official confirmation in the form of an official statement from Toyota CEO Katsuaki "Ken" Watanabe:

The compact rear-wheel drive sports car is envisioned to offer a new 'fun to drive' experience based on an all-new vehicle platform."

In addition we're told production will start in 2010, and Subaru's boxer four-cylinder engines will be used. The RWD Subie sports car should be available in late 2010, with the Toyota coming a few months afterwards in early 2011.

No names have been given for the two new vehicles, though the fan-boy forums are abuzz with rumors like "Subaru Impreza Coupe" or "New Toyota Supra." Both valid options and ideas. We guess we'll have to wait a year or so. Although the last drop of information wrung from Ken today was that the two new cars will be made at a new Subaru factory in Gunma, Japan. Although that facility hasn't yet been built. All of this comes on news Toyota confirmed that it's increasing its ownership stake in Subaru's parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries, from 8.7% to 16.5%. What a day, eh? [AutoCar, MotorAuthority, Automotive News]
Hadn't they just "confirmed" that they didn't want any more ownership in subaru? Oh well, it's all going to turn out well in the end, it seems.

Actually, this is sort of a worthwhile update. We knew there was a test mule, but no definitive statement on whether or not it would go into production!

Wow!

This is actually pretty awesome, though I'm a bit bummed to have to wait until 2011 if I want the Toyota version (feels like the Camaro/Firebird of yesteryear all over again...).

Looks like there are quite a few fun cars on the horrizon -- cool!

Here's that Jalopnik link http://jalopnik.com/tag/2010-subaru-impreza-coupe/

Most likely less, around 20-30k.

That picture of the red and white "Celica" concept... i dont know if i like it. Personally, it looks like a brick in the front. I think the nose needs to be more pointed off at the bottom, and have an arch to the hood. Other than that, i like it. Thats my opinion though.

But i will be extremely happy with a new Celica model with RWD! Finally, a modern production car by Toyota that i might like.

import forums like this one as to the design of this new toyota sports car should imulate???

I'm sensing a big dissapointment, hope not.....Subaru and Toyota are spawing this one.

Subaru worried about Toyota joint-venture
Quote:
For many the appeal of Subaru has been its niche status and AWD image but with its latest project – a jointly developed RWD sports car with Toyota – the carmaker is now faced with losing part of that appeal. The new joint-venture, which was announced earlier this month, will see Subaru and Toyota sell rebadged versions of a jointly developed sports car with Subaru responsible for the engineering work and Toyota the styling.

Careful marketing will be the key to success when the car debuts in late 2011, explained Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru’s parent) chief Mat Nagato during a recent interview with Automotive News. “A potential question could be cannibalization,” Nagato said. ” We may lose our longstanding territory, or we may lose the great niche brand image. The potential risk is there. We have to be very smart on marketing strategy.”

Subaru sells just 7% of Toyota’s total volume and management is wary of the competition it will face from Toyota once both cars are on the market. Nagato said it is unlikely the companies will divide global markets into Subaru-only and Toyota-only domains, so going head-to-head with industry giant will be an uphill battle all the way. Subaru has one advantage in that the new car will be powered by one if its trademark boxer engines.

Engineers are in the early stages of planning the new sports car with the only details confirmed so far is that it will use a front-mounted Subaru boxer engine and a RWD layout. Volume, pricing, design and engine size are still being decided, Nagato revealed.

Hes going to claim to own one for about a year and a half, then admit he lied about it. Then buy the next gen Rav4.

History will repeat itself.

egad, leave it alone. please.

i was going to put some money into my celica this summer, but i might be putting away everything I can toward this new car. Hell, so long as they stick with a sub-20k pricetag and if trade-in on the celi stays about 6-8k... I could be driving one of them off the lot with lower payments than i have now! lower payments, all options chosen myself, 0 miles on the odometer...

Hello "new celica" (sort of...).

Looks to me a bit like the latest gen Eclipse merged with a WRX.

I kind of like it, but I'll probably wait for the Toyota variant before I plunk down my money -- that will almost definitely be the next car I buy

EDIT: WTF?!?!?!?!?!
http://www.autoblog.com/2008/05/28/s...rsion-only-in/

God damn it!!!!

Looks like I'm going to have to buy the Subi version after all if I want it...

From Jalopnik:

This Subaru rear-wheel drive coupe (built as we all know, in a joint venture with Toyota) seems to be advancing at an incredible rate as today we get a look at the first platform mule for the new shared platform. Obviously clad in Legacy duds, the Subayota is not only rockin' a short wheelbase, but a sleepy Asian dude at the wheel. We hope he wakes up soon as the new ultimate platform prostitute would look terrible crashed all over the place.

In the end it won't look like anything close to that. That's too bad. I do want to get it and rebadge it with the JDM Toyota stuff to anger the Subie guys.
