Lexus Introduces Second-Generation GX 460 Luxury SUV for 2010
* New 301-hp V8 with Six-Speed Transmission
* Standard 10 airbags and Available Pre-Collision System
* More Versatile Interior with a New Standard Power Fold Third Row

Lexus has introduced an all-new, second-generation GX 460 luxury utility vehicle for 2010 that is more powerful, more efficient, quieter and more luxurious than the GX 470 model it replaces. The 2010 GX 460 achieves all of these significant developments while its 10 standard airbags and the available Pre-Collision System help enhance safety.

Positioned between the brand's LX 570 premium luxury utility vehicle and unibody-based RX models, the 2010 GX 460 combines "right sized" midsize packaging with family-friendly comfort and premium craftsmanship. The GX 460 has a standard seven-passenger configuration. Once again built with rugged body-on-frame construction, the 2010 GX 460 is also equipped with full-time four-wheel drive and the advanced Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) to help provide both exceptional on-road ride and handling and true off-road capability.

The 2010 Lexus GX 460 is powered by an all-new 4.6-liter V8 that is both more powerful and more efficient than the 4.7-liter V8 it replaces. The new engine produces 301 horsepower and 329 lb.-ft. of peak torque, and is teamed to a new six-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift. Combined city/highway fuel economy is improved by 13 percent to an EPA-estimated 17 mpg (vs. 15 mpg in the 2009 GX 470) -- better than other V8 luxury utility vehicles and competitive with some six-cylinder models. The GX 460 has an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway.

With the same vehicle footprint as the GX 470 it replaces, the 2010 GX 460 provides a more versatile interior. The second row seat slides 4.1 inches fore/aft to maximize passenger and cargo carrying ability. The foldable and reclining second row seats also feature a 60/40 walk-in function to access the standard power fold-flat third row seats. The rear door window uses a flip-up glass panel for added convenience.

Luxury is enhanced in the 2010 GX 460 by an even quieter cabin, as well as new additional standard features and options. The 2010 GX 460 features standard heated and ventilated front seats for example. Among the new luxury options are semi-aniline leather, a heated steering wheel, and heated outer second-row seats. New multimedia features – both standard and optional – expand onboard family entertainment choices.

Who buys something like that and thinks they made a good investment?

#11 ·
Rich stupid females that feel that they need the extra ground clearance and useless space to shuttle around their annoying child through suburbia.

Thinking about it..... that really does sum up everyone that will buy this.

Lexus today announced the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Prices (MSRP) for the all-new, second generation 2010 GX 460 luxury utility vehicle which will arrive at dealerships beginning in late December. 2010 Lexus GX 460 First Drive
This Is Not a Crossover Compromise

It uses body-on-frame construction like your average pickup truck and there's a good-size V8 under the hood. It has a two-speed transfer case for serious off-roading, and if you happen to own a 6,000-pound boat, it'll tow that, too.

In other words, the 2010 Lexus GX 460 isn't an SUV for people who are on the fence. It's a luxury vehicle for buyers who want every last capability and have the money to pay for it. It's an actual utility vehicle, and quite a nice one at that.

As its name suggests, the GX's V8 now displaces 4.6 liters. It's essentially the same V8 engine found in the Lexus LS 460 sedan but with different intake and exhaust plumbing and revised engine controls. The result is 301 horsepower and 326 pound-feet of torque, which is 38 horses and 6 lb-ft of torque more than the previous 4.7-liter V8.

Unlike the heavy-footed Land Rover LR3 (now LR4), the GX carries its weight well. Around town, the light-effort steering and quick throttle response make the GX feel small, easy to drive and perfectly suited to the country club environment it will no doubt live in during most of its life.

It doesn't have the impenetrable, military-grade feel of the Land Rover either. Even in the dirt, it feels like a light-duty machine, with delicate inputs and responses. Even the brakes have a light touch despite feeling more than capable of handling the GX's 5,300 pounds.

So the market is small, almost not worth it, but Lexus says there are still buyers who like the idea of having more capability than they really need. To them a crossover is a compromise, which is true. The Lexus GX 460 has a few compromises of its own, namely cargo room and a steep price. If you can get past these issues, though, there's no reason to look past it, unless of course you don't like being on camera.

Need to fit five car seats in side a vehicle? The GX 460 is one of the few vehicles on the road that can manage the task. Of course few will ever find the need for that kind of accommodation so I also gave the GX a thorough trial with child seats in the third row, second row and talk about cargo capacity. Stay tuned for the complete 2014 Lexus GX 460 review coming up in 2 days.
