Each Celica has a Unique 17-digit VIN number. The information below is what the dealer sees when they look at your VIN. The VIN number is also used by the DMV as a unique identifier to a vehicle. You can find your VIN number in a number of places including on the dash (drivers side), door frame, and stamped on the engine block.
Submitting a request to CarFax will show whenever your vehicle has changed hands, whether or not a car has a salvage title, when the car has been tested for emissions and more.

Each number of the VIN can be decoded as per this table

Chassis Number

The Chassis number is commonly used in the international Celica community to identify similar celicas. Confusion can arrise when referring Celicas as simply by trim number. For example, The 6th generation (round headlight) GT trim had different engines in Europe (180 HP 3S-GE) and in the USA (135 HP 5S-FE). Trim designations can also change by region. The same exact celica can be sold as a GT in the US and an SX in Australia due to different cultural perceptions. Thus the chassis is usually used to identify a celica. The Chassis number can be found on the firewall of FWD celicas.
The chassis number can be loosely looked at as a four-six combination of numbers and letters. for simplicities sake, first start by looking at the chassis number as a combination of four spaces.

1 2 3 4
The first space represents the engine family located in the car. For all Toyota engines this is the first letter that appears in the engine code.
8R, 18R, 20R, 22R = R family of engines
4A-FE, 7A-FE = A family of engines
1ZZ-FE, 2ZZ-GE= ZZ family of engines
The second letter designates the car as a "Celica". The letter will either be the letter "T" for FWD Celicas or "A" for RWD Celicas.
The third letter represents the generation of Celica. These are either a 1-digit (RWD) or 2-digit number (FWD).

Generation
Generation Code
1----2
2----4
3----6
4----16
5----18
6----20
7----23

The fourth space represents the various types of celicas that are available in each body style. this is a combination of different engines, suspension and steering available in each particular celica. Usually, there are anywhere from 2-6 celicas made at any one bodystyle.
Using the 6th generation Celica as an example:
0 = FWD, 7A-FE (US-ST Trim)
2 = FWD, 3S-GE (Europe GT Trim)
3 = FWD, 4WS, 3S-GE (Japan GT-R Trim)
4 = FWD, 5S-FE (US GT Trim)
5 = 4WD, 3S-GTE (Europe/Japan GT-4)
Thus looking at various chassis codes....

1 2 3 4
RA24 = R A 2 4 = R- series engine, Celica, 1st Generation, 4- style
AT200 =A T 20 0 = A- series engine, Celica, 6th Generation, 0-style
ST204 =S T 20 4 = S- series engine, Celica, 6th Generation, 4-style
ZZT230 =ZZ T 23 0 = ZZ- series engine, Celica, 7th Generation, 0-style

"T" also is designated for 4WD and don't forget the "W" which is for the midship rear wheel drive layout.

Year of first registration 01/02/2002 and is Auto transmission.Could you please help to find the year of manufacture and exact engine etc.
Thanks,
Wishy

Comes back as:

Vehicle characteristics
DESTINATION:JPN:JAPAN
ENGINE:2ZZGE:1800CC 16-VALVE DOHC EFI
TRANSMISSION:ATM:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
GEAR SHIFT TYPE:4FC:ATM, 4-SPEED FLOOR SHIFT
COLOR CODE:1D0
TRIM CODE:FG20

Built 02/2002 which disagrees w/the reg info.

Thanks 2way absolutely right. The insurers keep showing Manual in their list and therefore not able to insure the car.Would you be able to advise any specific insurers to approach for this imported model Please.
LV,Adrian and ensure can't find the car in their databases.
Thanks
Wishy

Sorry, I've no idea re: insurance in the UK. I seem to recall there being a UK Celica website somewhere. No idea if it is still around. We do have a number of UK members & one might have some insurer knowledge though. I'm assuming that the NATO version Celica wasn't offered w/an automatic. So, you'll probably have to explain/demonstrate it as imported. BTW, the Date of Manufacture (DOM) should be stamped on the doorframe placard.

What do you need VIN for? Want to check vehicle history by vin? You are planning to buy a car or need to find something. I mostly use Carfax or its analogues for this purpose.
what exactly do u think car fax uses to gather information... it uses the VIN to gather information from other sources that feed into a single data base. There is also ALOT of data you can get from a dealership that will not show up in carfax. Color code key codes engine codes and everything that came on the vehicle from the showroom.
