so in the spring I put on 17" rims. a few months ago I put on brand new tires, so they have new tread on them. but I'm living near Buffalo Ny and it's already started snowing. would it be a better idea for me to put my stock 15" back on for the winter or should I not worry too much about that? My thought is that I would slide more not having as much rubber between rim and road.

rim and road, I'm not too sure if that matters, For me, before I got my new tires I checked the tread depth of the new and old tires on each rim. I made sure that what I got was the same size as the older, smaller wheels. In that case, I'm just going to be using my 17"s in the snow.

Put it this way, If the snow is high enough to be going into your rim, it'll probably be hitting the front bumper as well, and you shouldn't be driving around in a celica with more than 4 inches of snow on the ground. =P

authentic TRD front bumpers cost around 1100 bones...just get a stock one to kick around in, in the winter time or you could just go replica
TRD dunno about the price on one of those though...

i'd go with the stock tires/rims in the winter for the simple fact of saving your rims from chips and scratches. not sure about ny but in pa they put a **** load of road salt down when it starts to snow.

i'm also doing what robare suggested and putting winter tires on the stocks and street/racing tires on my 17"s which i'll put back on in the spring.

I'm in the narrower is better camp, even if the idea is outdated. I have my snows on the stock 16 inch GTS wheels. I didn't do much homework, but the narrowest I could get at the time were 205s. That is stock width. I was hoping for 195 or 185. I'd say use the GT wheels because the greater choice of narrower snow tires in 15.

OTOH the SUV-likeness of the 205-55-16 might help if it is really deep. But I have gotten stuck with those anyway.
