Thoughts on 1995 BMW 318ti.

My neighbor wants to sell his 1995 BMW 318ti Sport Ed. He wants $3500 for it w/ 156k miles. I don't really know anything about the car and its capabilities. I'm seriously thinking about buying it after I just sold my '86 mr2 na to a friend last week. What do you guys think? Should I get it? Can it be a capable autocross car? I'm sure it won't be as good as the miatas on the track, but can it handle its own? Let me know what you guys think.

the TI is a turd - it has a different rear suspension from the regular 3-series. This is the weird hatchback one, not the coupe or sedan.

also - most 4 cylinder 3-series cars are dreadfully un-fun to drive.

a better choice would be an E30 from the late 80s/early 90s with the 2.5L engine.

Between the 2, which is lighter? I can't seem to find the specs on this car online.

The older E30's were around 2600 lb's. And the Ti you are referring to is around 2800 lb's.

I'd have to agree on that. Had a buddy in Holland who had one. It was a TURD! But maybe I felt that way because of the car I had at that time: A Peugeot 205 GTI Rallye (worked engine from 1.9 to 2.1, full rollbar), it hit a clean 165 mph on the highway. That was a fun little hatch.

Don't bother with a 318Ti, they're weak. It's a 1.8 without L.S.D. If you want an older bimmer, get either an E36 325is or 328is. The "is" models have LSD and would better suit autox. That or an old school E30 model.

The E36 M3 has been on my mind for a very long time, I don't know very much about them, but lately I have been doing a lot of searching and nosing around, because I'd really like to get one some time soon. That means I will be getting rid of my Celica. Does anyone have anything to share about them? Good, bad, common problems? Has enyone ever owned one? Although they're older and most used ones under 10K have over 100K miles on them, I'd still kill to own one. If anyone can please share.

Also I work on my own cars, but never did any serious work on a bmw.

I know a bunch of people with an E36 M3

3 of them used to be on this forum - dfess, buttdyno and neological

every single one of them has had endless problems with the cars. Fun to drive, hard to live with. Have a backup DD.

theres a decent writeup or explanation on an m3 forum somewhere, basically it said that they're fun cars to drive with good suspension and decent power for the age. unless your very good at working on BMW's i dont recommend it because you'll be knee deep in maintenance before you know it.

that being said i've never owned one, but my dad has and all BMW's have a decent amount of maintenance. but if your really looking to get one, i say do it. the e46 m3 is a car i dream to own within the next 10 years.

The third generation of the BMW 3 Series was a very popular one. It had a new design and improved aerodynamics. It was produced between 1990 and 2000.
