I know that the Celica GT runs the 1zz, as does many other toyotas. My question is: Do all 1zz's have this high of a failure rate? or is it a MRS thing?
I don't think that stock 1zz's have a high failure rate at all. I think by going to 2 boards with a lot of people who track their cars and noting that they broke their engines is not really a fair judge of engine reliability.

Count the number of corrollas and matrices driving about with no problems whatsoever. Add to that the increasing number of celicas running 10-12 psi daily with no problems whatsoever.

Yes, cars break. Cars break more if you take high G turns in a car without custom baffled oil pan. They also break more if you rev the heck out of them, drag race them constantly, or boost them to death. Saying that the 1zz is doing worse than modern american engines is a big stretch... and it actually strikes me that the 2zz is much more prone to failure than the 1zz (lift bolt issues, tuning lift etc....)
