Chevrolet announced earlier this year that it would cancel the Cobalt SS Supercharged for the 2008 model year, but new information reveals that Chevy is working on a turbocharged version of the Cobalt SS. For 2008, it appears as though General Motors will equip the Cobalt SS with the same 260 horsepower 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the Saturn Sky Red Line, Pontiac Solstice GXP and HHR SS.

The enthusiast web site cobaltss.net recently discovered a copy of the SAE Power Certification for the 2008 Cobalt that revealed certification for GM's L850 LNF engine

Too bad it took them so long to make it quick....When it first came out, it was hyped...Supposed to compete with the SRT...it failed... Now it's a couple years later and it's a salvage attempt..Even the "staged" cobalts were only in the 13's...

Only when it deals with Japanese FWD cars. It makes perfect sense for domestic FWD cars.

ahh, good ole ecotec - nice to know you can pick up the GM Performance Parts catalog and boost this thing up to 900 hp with off the shelf parts

The Civic SI dances circles around those cars (and is my personal favorite, take the sedan for better weight distribution).

the MazdaSpeed 3 blows them off the road in a straight line (2.3L direct injection, can't beat it for cheap power)

the GTI is an overall well rounded car, that with a chip, is pretty ridiculous ($600 for 252 hp/303 lb-ft of torque, before bolt-ons)

do I smell a sport compact comparo coming up?

who is "them"??...I hope you've excluded the SRT from that "them"...because MS3 falls short of the former SRT stock for stock (ask me how I know) and well we don't need to talk about the power figures of the new one...

should be pretty cool but i heard that modding that engine is a pain in the ass right now as it is used in the saturn sky redline and they cant pull much out of them yet. Aftermarket will probably fix that though.

the former SRT no longer exists as a new car for sport compact comparos - and stock for stock it never ran much faster than the MS3 (both have run high 13s to low 14s stock)

so comparing any new car to a car no longer on sale opens a wide world up

when I say "them" I refer to the atrocity that is the new SRT-4, and is again no faster or slower than an MS3

but, at the end of the day, the MS3 has direct injection
which means mod for mod it will always have higher compression resulting in better throttle response, faster spool-up, more power, and better fuel economy

plus the MS3 runs circles around the old or new SRT-4 on anything where you make turns

and keep in mind - I hate the MS3 with a passion
its just a much better car - which is why it costs more
