BMW has been keeping their new Z4 roadster under tight wraps with big lumpy plastic pieces to cover any hint to the car. But recently we have seen the first of the next gen-Z4's with just tape on the Nurburgring. And even if it does not reveal all that much about the design details, these latest photos to confirm that the new SLK rival will have a metal roof. It will be the first time BMW covers its roadster with a hard-top following in the footsteps of the BMW 3-series Convertible.

But besides being an SLK rival, BMW is also gunning for the Porsche Boxster. A full range of engines should put the new Z4 alongside the Boxster, including the twin-turbo 3.0 liter straight six-cylinder unit. Also, jumping on the bandwagon, BMW is contemplating to offer a diesel engine while the range-topping Z4 M will see the new 4.0 liter V8 under the bonnet. All Z4's will feature BMW's Efficient Dynamics in order to cut CO2 emissions and boost fuel economy.

The next generation Z4 will only be an inch or so longer and wider than the outgoing model. Now that the big plastic covers have come off our carparazzi have finally been able to make some educated guesses. We are expecting the new Z4 to go on sale late 2009.

judging by these images, it has same overall shape with a wider kidney grill up front.

It's hard to telll due to the paint (obviously), but it looks like they may have taken away the terrible line that goes through the BMW sidemarker on the front fender. That line made the z4 complete sh*t.

heh, I was actually thinking of what I'd want one to look like if I were to design one, so I did a quick sketch... :wiggle:

Well, what do you guys think?

looks like a Z3 mixed with a Lambo and the rear hips of an Aston.

I doubt it, the 2006 Z4M had them but they dropped them for 2007 due to complaints. They got regular tires plus an "M Mobility Kit".
I'm pretty sure none of the M-cars run runflats or electronic steering like the rest of the lineup because everyone complained, but BMW has gone on the record as stating their devotion to runflats for their regular cars.

Damn...they're just whoring out their new twin turbo beast, aren't they. WTF is the justification for buying the 135i now? A roadster'esque car with back seats? WTF's the justification for buying a 335xi (AWD) vs 335i (RWD) vs 135i vs this Z4??!?!

In any case...at least it will get the M3 engine :) . They should detune it to 400 hp flat or something to keep the M3 on top.

Here's the differences

the 335i Coupe has a lot more style than the Sedan - they're both fairly large. the 335i convertible offers a 4 seat, folding hard top for people who like to eat dicks with their butts.

the 135i is slightly nimbler due to a shorter wheelbase and marginally lower weight, though its weight distribution isn't as good and they've cripped it with an interior tire package compared to the 335 w/sport package - resulting in more understeer (safer for the inexperienced driver)

the z4 3.5i is a very very low slung, dedicated two seat car with a soft, easily operated top - basically a quintessential roadster, except that it has more grand touring pretensions due to its more laid back throttle and steering (than say, an S2000), hugenormous trunk (9 cu. ft compared to the average roadster's 5 cu. ft) and superior damping that you pretty much come to expect from any BMW - so its sort of a roadster/gt hybrid.

the car that REALLY needs this engine is the 6 series - to create an entry level car - but then most people wouldn't even bother getting the v8 since the twin turbo six is just that good (and even better with a reflash).
