2010 Mazda 3 First Drive
complete article
Bigger, Better, More Powerful

First Impressions:

A promising follow-up to a class-leading performance.

* 167-hp 2.5-liter inline-4
* 6-speed manual transmission
* Improved fuel economy
* $500 navigation system

Mazda hasn't yet announced pricing for the 2010 Mazda 3, but it insists the new model will remain as competitively priced as the current car when it goes on sale in the beginning of 2009. A five-door model, which Mazda is yet to reveal, will go on sale at the same time.

With numerous innovative options, class-leading dynamics, engaging driving character and a new look, the 2010 Mazda 3 seems set once again to claw its way to class leadership. It might not be a revolution, but it clearly ain't broke.

update.

At least is $500 and not $2500 like other models
You can't compare the two. The higher priced options are 7" touchscreen navigation units that are integrated with the car's functions (on some vehicles). Some even have hard drives.

This is like comparing a Eclipse double-din hard drive unit to a Garmin nuvi 255.

Im not comparing, I am just saying that the price goes with the inferior quality GPS. Basically, that they are being more or less fair on the price-features area. ;)

Mazda3 hatch unveiled
complete article
PRESS RELEASE said:
The second generation Mazda3 five-door hatchback follows on the heels of the four-door sedan revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

The new-generation Mazda3 five-door hatchback adopts the same characteristics as its sedan counterpart, offering sporty driving and a dynamic design, together with top class environmental and safety performance.

Environmental-friendly qualities were top of mind during development, including efficient powertrains, Mazda typical lightweight engineering and amongst the best-in-class aerodynamics.

All petrol engine versions of the new-generation Mazda3 will offer even further advanced environmental performance, including the world's first vehicle catalyst to be constructed with single nanotechnology. This new development enables Mazda to reduce its use of scarce resources such as platinum and palladium.

It looks slightly better than the sedan, IMO.

Mazda 3's New Face

MSRP of Test Vehicle: $24,915

What Works:
Excellent power, handling and poise for an economy car.

What Needs Work:
Exterior styling does not appeal to the masses; brake performance is unimpressive.

Bottom Line:
Mazda introduces its new 3 without compromising the spirit of its outgoing model.

* 2.5-liter MZR inline-4
* 167 hp; 168 lb-ft of torque
* Six-speed transmission
* 21 mpg city/29 mpg highway

Keep the Heritage
With a scent of burned rubber and brake pads in the air, our test day comes to an end. We pack our bags, grab our jacket and head for home.

Mazda has changed the 2010 Mazda 3 without changing its attitude. New ingredients improve its dynamic make-up without compromising the spirit we loved so much in the outgoing model. We expect Mazda also won't compromise when it comes time to announce pricing on the Mazda 3 early next year. It should be comparable to its predecessor.

We appreciate the effort to refine products. But when a redesign is scheduled simply because the product life cycle suggests it's time, the customer usually pays the price for a car that's different but not better. The 2010 Mazda 3 is an example of doing it right. Every improvement here reflects a functional purpose. Of course, as the Mazda 3's grille also proves, sometimes functional isn't always attractive.

21mpg for the city is pretty sh!tty.

The bumper is smiling at me. Reminds of those chops where people put a mouth and eyes on the car, just like the movie Cars.
