.Behind them, two legends of the race practically had the Stock Mini class to themselves: 20-time winner Rod Hall, along with Emily Miller, and Mike Winkel in a Hummer H3 took on Robert Ditner, Joe Nolan, Kez Ziesemer, and three-time winner Ivan Stewart in a 2010 Toyota 4Runner. Of three starters in the class, these two vehicles were the only ones to finish, and the issue came down to the last few miles: Hall’s Hummer suffered a long repair stop at mile 40 and he only passed Stewart’s 4Runner for first place just thirty miles from the finish.
While Stewart settles for second – and Hall gets his record-setting 21st class win – it’s a triumph for the truck and drivers to have finished the race at all. Congratulations to all involved
According to sources at Toyota, the four-cylinder version of the venerable 4Runner is being discontinued after just one model year. The main reason for the drop is the extremely low take rate, with the V-6 model accounting for well over 90 percent of 4Runner sales.
Why such low interest? The 2.7-liter I-4 doesn't offer much of a fuel economy advantage versus the larger 4.0-liter V-6 - especially when considering its 113-horsepower and 100 pound-foot disadvantage. In fact, EPA ratings for the two are just a single mpg apart from each other, registering at 20 mpg combined city/highway for the smaller engine and 19 mpg combined for the V-6 in the same SR5 2WD trim. And any way you slice it, 157 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque isn't a whole lot when you have nearly 4800 pounds of curb weight to move around.
No word on how many four-cylinder 4Runners were sold, but we estimate the figure to be less than 1000. That would make this frugal 4Runner one of the rarest Toyotas of the last several decades.

The Toyota 4Runner, the fifth generation of this rugged, full-capability SUV and a key model in the Toyota SUV lineup for 28 years, continues as one of the few fully capability SUVs available in its segment.
The 4Runner combines rugged body-on-frame construction with suspension technology that yields ride comfort more often associated with car-based platforms. The 2013 4Runner is available in a variety of configurations and in three models: a well-equipped SR5, top-of-the-line Limited, plus a Trail grade for maximum off-road capability. Optional third-row seats allow for up to seven-person capacity.
Drivetrain configurations include rear wheel 4x2, part-time 4x4 and full-time multi-mode 4x4 with a locking center differential. All models are equipped with a 4.0-liter, 270-horsepower V6 teamed to a five-speed ECT-i automatic transmission. For 2013, the SR5 grade gets a switch-type control for the transfer case, replacing the lever.
