Lexus LF-Ch concept
Next year Lexus will have a crack at the Audi A3 and BMW 1-series. You’ll see a concept version of the car at this autumn’s Frankfurt show. The big news is that, like the new RX SUV, it’ll be hybrid-only. Hybrid is to Lexus what high-boost diesel is to the Germans. Big performance, low thirst.

The new compact Euro-Lexus won’t share any body panels with the HS250h, and it will be a bit smaller. And of course it’ll be a hatchback. It will be FWD and based on the versatile new Prius platform.

why ?

what does this have to do with Lexus?

Lexus is about luxurious interiors, smooth, quiet rides and gentle yet full power delivery.

A dinky little compact has none of those things.

Update!

Lexus is set to launch a five-door compact hatchback at September’s Frankfurt motor show.
Our sources won’t divulge the car’s name - although rumors suggest that both ‘BS’ and ‘CS’ are in the frame. They will say that the car will be a petrol-electric hybrid-only model, like the firm’s RX SUV, so a fleet-focused diesel model isn’t too likely.

As such, the new compact Lexus is likely to use the same power-train as the US-market-only HS250h – a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that, with the help of an electric motor, produces 187bhp.

Like the HS it’ll also be front-wheel drive, but it won’t use the same platform as the bigger HS.

“The Frankfurt concept is called C-Premium,” our source advised. It’s a 90 per cent match for the real thing, which we’ll see at Geneva next year. It should be on sale in the UK by Autumn 2010.”
We're finally going to be able to see it.

Judging by the concept's name it will likely be CS.

Lexus trademarks CT 200h, CT 300h and CT 400h
A recent report published in WCF told of how Lexus will soon be offering a competitor for these Germans. What is now more apparent is that the range will be designated as CT in addition to existing IS, GS, RX and LS models. It will also be hybrid-only. Last month the company filed US patents for the words CT 200h, CT 300h and CT 400h. While the Europeans continue reaping diesel rewards, Lexus sees a better opportunity in the hybrid scenario. What these model designations mean is that the CT 200h for instance, will have 2.0-liter performance and good fuel consumption from a smaller engine. Likewise the 400h offers 4.0-liter V8 performance from a smaller engine, likely to be the 3.5-liter found in a number of other Toyota cars. The latter might be compared to current foes like the Audi S3 and the BMW 135i.

A concept version of the Lexus CT will, so goes the rumor, appear at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, then move to Tokyo in October, possibly to LA in December, Detroit in January 2010 and then Geneva by which time it will be the production version on show.
1 more month to go...
