Ram Trucks go Commercial with New Chassis Cab Variants
Chrysler's Ram truck division will begin shipping its 2011 commercial-duty chassis cabs, putting another option out there for big truck buyers and helping to fill out the Ram lineup.

Ram's commercial chassis cabs, much like Ford's and GM's, are able to be spec'd out to suit a variety of customer needs: weight classes (3500, 4500, 5500), trim levels (ST, SLT and Laramie), "four cab-to-axle lengths (60, 84, 108 and 120)", engines (5.7 liter Hemi / cleaner, B-20 biodiesel-compatible 6.7 liter Cummins turbo-diesel), and 2- or 4-wheel-drive are all there to be chosen from.

The diesel engine gets either a 6-Speed manual or 6-Speed automatic transmission, while the Hemi snags a 5-Speed automatic. Automatic transmissions have a feature called Electronic Range Select (it puts a ceiling on the highest gear available).

There's a whole bag full of work-specific extras chassis cabs get, too: front axles get higher weight ratings (for accessories like snow plows), 390 mm front brakes, standard tow mirrors, and if needed, the truck can be "a 'hot spot' for instant access to Web sites, e-mail, and personalized music and more" thanks to a Uconnect multimedia system. Diesel-equipped models also get an exhaust brake.

Chrysler says, "The 2011 Chassis Cab vehicles feature a 50,000 psi high-strength steel frame with advanced torsional rigidity and stiffness. A coil-spring suspension system in front and a multi-leaf spring design is maintained in the rear for heavy-duty capability. Front and rear shocks and springs are tuned for optimum ride quality and capability."

Spied! Prototype Plug-In Electric Hybrid Ram 1500
Even though Chrysler pulled the plug on the Two-Mode hybrid version of the Ram 1500 half-ton pickup earlier this year, it's full speed ahead for a plug-in electric version, as seen in pictures just caught by our spies and confirmed as PEV Ram prototypes by Chrysler sources.

Chrysler is using a modified version of the Two-Mode hybrid transmission (manufactured by GM) to develop a test group of extended-range electric Rams as part of a $48 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy. The vehicles — paired with a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 and 12-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery — are capable of up to 20 miles of zero-emission, all-electric range without gasoline. Overall fuel economy is expected to improve by more than 65 percent for average drive cycles.

Chrysler Unveils Ram Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle [Chrysler Getting Into EV Business With Ram Plug-In]
The new Ram plug-in hybrid is one such truck that Chrysler hopes will make car and truck enthusiasts think of that company when they think of green vehicles. The Ram hybrid works to pair a 12 Kwh battery with Chrysler’s very own hemi engine they are known so well for. The battery, made by Electrovaya has been billed as one that will allow drivers to go 20 miles on electricity alone and after that the car’s regular combustion engine would kick in.

Unfortunately, at the moment, Chrysler is not offering this particular truck to individual consumers but it can’t be too long before the company decides to offer the Ram to a wider audience.

INTRODUCING THE 2011 HURST HEMI HAULER
RAM 1500 Given Hurst Treatment Merging Performance and Utility

Hurst Performance Vehicles, a company synonymous with more than 50 years of experience creating high performance muscle cars and performance parts, announced today at the NADA Convention, that it has begun designing and fabricating parts for its newest project, The Hurst HEMI Hauler, a performance oriented, limited edition supercharged RAM 1500.

Beginning with a 2011 Regular Cab Sport R/T RAM 1500 as their base, the technicians at Hurst will modify the truck with a series of cosmetic accessories and performance parts to not only make the truck faster, but also look good going fast, as well.

The team at Hurst will first work to make the truck's 5.7L HEMI V8 breathe better with the addition of a supercharger and polished custom exhaust. What results is a truck that sounds as good as it performs.

Continuing in a proud Hurst tradition of custom craftsmanship, the exterior of the truck will feature Hurst graphics on the driver and passenger side fenders, doors and bed, as well as Hurst badges on the grill and tailgate. The wheels remain factory 22" forged aluminum polished rims, but are given the Hurst treatment with a custom paint job on the interior spokes.

I kind of like it.

Ram Codename: Adventurer Officially Named 1500 Express
"Codename: Adventurer". That was the working title for a special, base model Ram 1500 with a 390-horsepower 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with monochromatic paint (Bright Silver Metallic, Bright White, Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl, Deep Cherry Red Crystal Pearl; Deep Water Blue Pearl; Flame Red, Hunter Green Pearl and Mineral Gray Metallic), 20-inch wheels, dual-tip exhaust, a standard 3.55 axle ratio and a base price of $23,830 including a $975 destination fee.

Thankfully, all of that has stayed the same for the go-fast-look-cool-spend-little Ram truck, but the name, pulling from the vault, will be called the 1500 Express.

Ram "Long-Hauler" Concept
The Long-Hauler name fits the truck’s length and driving range. The 197.4-inch-wheelbase pickup is based on the Class 5 Ram 5500 medium-duty chassis cab commercial truck (19,500 pounds gross vehicle weight). It’s been upfitted with an 8-foot long dual-rear-wheel cargo box and an extra 110 gallons of diesel fuel capacity – 60 gallons in a custom midship reservoir positioned between cab and bed and 50 gallons in a bed-mounted combo fuel tank and toolbox – for a total of 162 gallons. Pulling a big trailer, that's about 1,600 miles to 2,000 miles of range, by our estimates.

To make the ride as comfortable as possible, the Long-Hauler features Ram’s four-door Mega Cab configuration, which offers the most interior volume of any full-size pickup. For backseat passengers, there are adjustable footrests, tray tables, a refrigerator and Wi-Fi connectivity. It’s also trimmed inside and out with Ram’s new top-of-the-line Laramie Longhorn option package.

Under the hood is a 6.7-liter Cummins inline-six-cylinder oil burner rated at 305 horsepower and 610 pounds-feet of torque. It’s paired with a six-speed Aisin automatic transmission. The gross combined weight rating is 37,500 pounds, according to an information card that was with the truck when it debuted at the Mid-America Truck Show earlier this year.
