2013 Chevrolet Corvette
The things that CAFE regulations will make automakers do is pretty frightening for us car enthusiasts. Even some of America’s famous sports cars, like the Corvette, aren’t safe from wrath of strict fuel-economy regulations.

Well we have some good news for you today. No one at GM is talking about a mid-engine C7 Corvette anymore. Previous reports suggested that Bob Lutz and other GM exes were leaning toward a mid-engine layout for the next-generation C7 ‘Vette since it would be easier to cut fuel-economy from a mid-mounted LS3 V8. Basically, GM decided that due to the high-cost of switching from the current front-engine layout to a mid-engine was not worth it.

Still the C7 Corvette is not likely to launch earlier than 2013 as a 2014 model year. According to Motor Trend, a 3.6L direct-injection V6 for the C7 could be on the drawing boards.

The rendering looks great.

The last straight six I recall Chevy having was the huge DOHC 4.2 in the Equinox. Probably wouldn't fit in a Solstice. I'm a huge fan of straight sixes obviously because of the Crown. (On a side note, yesterday I went to look at a donor Celica Supra for my Crown porject, they fit the 5M-GE into an S13 body, looked right at home.)

As for the DOHC, variable cam/lift and direct injection I agree wholeheartedly.

Chevrolet C7 Corvette put on hold indefinitely
We told you earlier this month that the C7 Corvette won’t arrive until 2013 as a 2014 model year. Well, according to AutoWeek it could be longer than that. Sources have confirmed that since GM is in a financial crisis, plans for the next-generation Corvette are on an indefinite hold with no official or set schedule.

Not only is the new C7 Corvette a couple years out, plans to refresh or upgrade the current C6 ‘Vette is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

AutoWeek says another version of the story goes that the current Corvette was planned to be upgraded in 2012 as a 2013 model. At that time, the car would be eight years old and if the C7 is continued to be delayed like it is, it’ll be at least 12 years until the C7 arrives.

Other than that - Tom Wallace, Corvette’s vehicle-line executive told AutoWeek: “Whether [you are talking about] the C6 or C7, I’m not going to comment on future product [specifics], including engines or any of that. We’re still working on future Corvettes, but the scope of change is not yet decided. There are changes, some neat stuff, coming for 2010 that I can’t talk about yet.”
Yeah, not surprised.

This is why I'm going to vote for Obama. He made the biggest reference to U.S. automakers out of everybody, and sees their need for help.

Now if GM decides to cut weight on all models and make a performance oriented hybrid vehicle with V6's and V8's...like how the Toyota FT-HS was supposed to be...they could corner a market and keep the sports car alive IMO...

Based on a 5yr plan (to get out of debt or stay above water) they will not build a new corvette. Thats why the date is 2014. It will in all liklihood be longer because the 5yr plan as of now is economy cars. They need to turn the company around before they spend tens of millions on R&D and new tooling. To retool any fabricated part is expensive, let alone an entire car!

Has anyone look at the values of american sports cars lately, its terrible? You can buy a 2 yr old loaded vette for $32k.

You can easily get a c5 vette for under 20k now which is why I still will never understand why people buy 350z's for that price.

mad tyte JDM dorifuto yo!

In all honesty, I'd take a Z over a C5 Vette - I hate the leaf spring rear end and the interior came straight out of the 1995 Cavalier.

And keep in mind, I really hate the Z too.

Now, the GTO - that's got a great interior and the LS1/LS2 motors, not to mention an IRS on coil springs. It looks kinda like a suppository though.

What GM's planning for the C7...
Here's what we know: GM is considering at least three scenarios for the C7, and GM Design is still some time away from boiling down competing proposals (at least five were in the mix at one point) for the car. That means the car, originally planned for the 2011 model year (to coincide with the 100th anniversary of Chevrolet), will likely launch as a 2012 model and may even slip further, depending on how the new CAFE regulations pan out.

1. Evolution, not revolution
An evolutionary car would continue improvements made by the C6 over the C5 and take advantage of emerging technologies for more gains in performance, handling, ride, cost, and, of course, fuel economy.

2. Let's chase Ferrari
GM vice chairman Bob Lutz reportedly has been pushing for a mid-engine C7. Two directions have emerged. The more realistic plan has Chevrolet building only an upmarket, mid-engine Corvette, while the other calls for two models: a conventional front-engine C7 and the mid-engine car and splitting Corvette off from Chevy to make it a prestige brand. Under either plan, the next Corvette will have a radically different design from the current car.

3. The hail Mary play
The worst-case scenario (apart from doing nothing and letting Corvette die in 2020) calls for the C7 to be based off a new version of the Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Sky Kappa architecture.

I like option #2 the best. A mid-engine 'Vette sounds awesome. The purists might scoff at the idea.

Bob Lutz: Chevy Looking At "Four-Door Corvette" For U.S.
"[T]he thrill of high performance driving is unmatched by anything that doesn't have rear-wheel drive, bags of torque and a nice transmission." That's why "Maximum" Bob Lutz thinks the Holden Commodore could bring the U.S. a "four-door Corvette."

In addition to Reuss's comments yesterday on a new El Camino, Lutz went on to tell The Age "[T]here's a possibility of a premium Chevrolet sedan that would be sold in limited numbers. Think of it as a kind of four-door Corvette"

:shrugs:
