2013 Toyota RAV4
Toyota's next-gen compact crossover will face stiff competition.

An extensively camouflaged prototype of the next-generation Toyota RAV4 compact crossover, the current version of which debuted in 2006. The RAV4 was mildly refreshed for 2009, but it’s ripe for a redesign. These spy photos show that the next RAV4 is going to change quite a bit from its current form and move closer to the crossover mainstream.

It looks a little bit smaller...or my eyes are deceiving me.

Rear looks Mitsubishi-like. Not sure if want.

It does indeed look bigger than the current-gen. My parents own a 2007 Rav4 and it's really nice. The engine is peppy, steering is relatively responsive for a crossover and without the optional 3rd row there's PLENTY of storage space. We've taken vacations with a full car (5 people) + all of our luggage and extra crap and we've never not had enough space for all of our things.

They were debating between the Rav4 and the CR-V when they bought it, glad they picked the 4.

Redesigned 2013 Toyota RAV4 May Drop V-6 Engine Option, Third Row
These renderings preview what we might see from the 2013 Toyota RAV4, which should join newly redesigned vehicles like the 2013 Venza and 2012 Camry in featuring a stretched grille connecting refreshed headlights. New wheel options will freshen the profile view, but it’s inside compact crossover customers should be in for a major update. While the 2012 Toyota RAV4 already offers the automaker’s connectivity system, Entune, the redone 2013 model will showcase the system in an interior with improved materials.

Currently, a 2012 RAV4 with the 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is good for 179 hp at 6000 rpm and 172 lb-ft of torque…and is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. With a more modern transmission, the 2013 RAV4 should easily cross 30 mpg highway in EPA testing; the 2012 model in front-drive form is rated 22/28 mpg city/highway.

The future of a potential 2013 Toyota RAV4 hybrid model is uncertain. One source suggests such a model will debut this fall alongside the regular 2013 RAV4 while another wonders why Toyota would debut a RAV4 hybrid before a Venza hybrid, which could command higher prices. Until we get official details on the 2013 Toyota RAV4, however, take a closer look at these renderings and let us know what you want to see from the revised RAV4 crossover.

Spyshots: 2014 Toyota RAV4
Toyota was a pioneer in its segment with the first generation RAV4, which was considerably smaller than the SUV they currently build. This one was introduced in 2006 and suffered a facelift at the middle of its cycle in 2009.

So presumably, this brand new RAV4 is going to be on the market within the next year or so. This is first time we’ve been able to show you a prototype, and even though it’s heavily camouflaged, we can see it’s changed a lot.

2013 Toyota RAV4 Rendered
A look at Toyota's next bread-and-butter crossover.

What It Is:
The next generation of Toyota’s RAV4 crossover. We’ve already spotted camouflaged prototypes during testing; this rendering incorporates many of the key changes expected for Toyota’s ubiquitous small SUV, including a more carlike look with smoother styling.

Why It Matters: The RAV4 still is a hot item in Toyota showrooms, despite the current model being long in the tooth. It’s also growing out of step with the crossover mainstream (it still offers an old-school-SUV-style tailgate-mounted spare tire, for example), so this latest iteration needs to fall in line with the rest of the segment. That means a less-truckish appearance, as well as improved fuel economy.

Platform: The next RAV4 should sit on a variation of the current model’s platform. But it will look like a new animal, thanks mostly to a smoother snout, a more steeply raked windshield, and the absence of an exterior-mounted spare tire. Our artist’s rendering applies Toyota’s latest design language to the shape of the prototype RAV4s we’ve seen. Basically, imagine a current-gen RAV4 mixed with the latest Camry sedan, and you’ve pretty much got it. Although this rendering speculates styling that’s something of a departure from that of the contemporary RAV4, it’s not too far off from what the European RAV4 has looked like for some time now.

Powertrain: Buyers should again be able to spec their RAV4s with either front- or all-wheel drive, as is customary throughout the small-crossover arena. We expect the outgoing RAV4’s four- and six-cylinder engines to largely carry over to this new one; however, Toyota likely will upgrade to six-speed automatic transmissions for both engines. (Currently, the four-cylinder RAV4 gets an ancient four-speed auto and the brawny V-6 model gets a five-cog slushbox.)

Estimated Arrival Time and Price: If this new RAV4 is to make the 2013-model-year cutoff, it’ll probably appear late this summer or in the fall; otherwise, it could debut sometime early next year as a 2014. Pricing shouldn’t budge much from the current RAV4’s base of $23,460.

Toyota RAV4 SUV: 2013 model spied, interior revealed
By Tim Beissmann | August 09th, 2012

.

A prototype of the upcoming 2013 Toyota RAV4 has been spied in Saudi Arabia, giving us our first peek at the sharpened exterior styling and an almost unhindered look at the overhauled cabin of the all-new mid-sized SUV.

Uploaded by a member of Saudi Arabia’s T1C1 Toyota Club forum, the images confirm the fourth-generation RAV4 will take styling cues from the new Toyota Camry sedan and share much with the upcoming ninth-generation Toyota Corolla hatch, which was revealed in leaked brochure images late last month.

Due in Australia in the first quarter of 2013 following its international launch later this year, the new Toyota RAV4 features angular headlights bordering a two-nostril grille split by a prominent Toyota badge.

The horizontal tail-lights sit directly below the rear window, while the tapered roofline emphasises a design shift from the current model’s boxy SUV dimensions to a softer crossover look.

The cabin also benefits from a complete redesign that sees it adopt a new instrument cluster with a broad cover, a large central screen surrounded by simple switchgear, classy stitched leather across the dashboard and a new three-spoke steering wheel.

As CarAdvice revealed earlier this year, the 2013 Toyota RAV4 will be a four-cylinder-only affair in Australia, with the V6 set to disappear with the outgoing model.

A 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is set to replace the existing 125kW/224Nm 2.4-litre, while a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with more torque and better fuel efficiency will join the local line-up for the first time.

Despite being largely unchanged since it arrived in Australia in February 2006, the third-generation RAV4 remains Toyota’s fifth best selling model, trailing only the HiLux, Corolla, Camry and Prado. It is currently the second most popular medium SUV in the country behind the Nissan X-Trail, with 8614 sold year-to-date.

Looks likes its taken some lexus styling points.

I don't like that its getting bigger (or so it would seem). I saw our 07 (current-gen) Rav4 parked next to a 2000 model...it was noticeable bigger, and this upcoming generation seems bigger still.

Speaking of which, my parents passed the Rav4 down to my sister and picked up a new RDX. It's also quite a bit larger than the Rav4, but its pretty damn nice.
