The Big Test: Luxury Crossovers - BMW, Range Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Volvo
Diversity Report: Mucking Around Autodom's Hippest Segment With The Most Colorful Crew In Town

Conclusion

Selecting a last-place finisher in a Big Test is sometimes difficult, but we had no qualms putting the Swede in the back. If you love safety, fiscal sense, Scandinavian sensibility, and interiors that squeak more than in our long-term Nissan Versa Note, then the XC60 has your name on it. We were disappointed with how non-luxurious the Volvo was compared with the rest of the group. (Our tired-feeling XC60 test vehicle had more than 6,000 hard press-fleet miles on the odometer, but the Versa Note had more than 12,000 last we checked.)

Inhabiting fourth is the MKC, which had luxe-worthy ride quality and leather seating but failed to move the judges with rousing innovation or a serious content-for-the-money play. If non-enthusiast buyers are seeking seat height and a responsive throttle, they won't find it here.

Third belongs to the Evoque. The Rover will cost ya, but with strong interior quality (even if we weren't the biggest fan of its leather) we could at least see where the money was going each time we got behind the wheel. We'd recommend forgoing the 20-inch wheels on the most outwardly off-road-craving vehicle in attendance.

Second place shows how important driving manners are taken in the Big Test. The X3 had an incredibly spacious cabin but not the greatest materials, plus average ride and interior noise abatement. But driving this high-riding luxury crossover hard was like driving a vehicle from a completely different (and much sportier) segment. It didn't do too shabby with fuel consumption, value, and cost of ownership, either. This leaves us the NX 200t F Sport. It comes well-dressed at the lowest as-tested price, with good cost of ownership and high marks for driving experience, cabin and leather quality, ride and handling balance, efficiency, and safety. And as Loh asserted, its "engine sounds great under wide-open throttle, especially in Sport mode." Lexus isn't for everyone. But if you're hunting for a compact luxury CUV with the most diverse skill set, look no further than the NX 200t.

1st Place: Lexus NX 200t F Sport
The sharp creases in the sheetmetal say otherwise, but the NX is one of the most well-rounded vehicles on sale today.

2nd Place: BMW X3 xDrive28i
Scary days await the competition if BMW ever decides to sex up its interiors.

3rd Place: Land Rover Range Rover Evoque
The scenery has changed significantly since the Evoque was our SUV of the Year, but it's still hanging in there.

4th Place: Lincoln MKC 2.0 AWD
Lincoln has been making decent strides lately, but we're still looking for a magic spark.

5th Place: Volvo XC60 T6
The safety star is utterly outmatched in several areas of evaluation.

Going beyond horsepower & handling, watch as the Lexus NX is tested for its ability to elicit an emotional response as compared to the Audi Q5.

In our latest Lexus NX story, hair salon owner Sara Paleschi explains how the Lexus NX's individuality, combined with its modern styling and quality craftsmanship, made it the perfect reward for her hard work.

The Lexus NX premium crossover is already a huge success for Lexus, its mix of sharp styling and cutting-edge technology garnering well over 10,000 orders across Europe and contributing to Lexus' UK sales figures hitting a seven-year high in 2014.

Yet figures only tell part of the story - what's really important is the ownership experience for the thousands of NX drivers now out on the roads. "A car is so much more than getting from A to B - it says something about you, it says what you're achieving in life, how successful you are," relates Sara. "[The NX] cocoons you in luxury....it's just perfect!"

Played out on a disused runway lined with more than 350 projected mapped motion and audio sensitive lasers and lights, the front-man battles against speed and rhythm to conduct and navigate a trio of striking Lexus NXs’, hitting the laser ‘targets’ at the correct tempo to synchronise with his smash hit.

The unprecedented live event, shot in one night last week, sees the musician’s skills put to the test as he joins three stunt drivers including 2013 Blockbuster, Rush frontman, Niki Faulkner, to take on the colossal ‘sound-road’, race against rhythm and successfully complete the challenge in the limited hours of darkness available before the sun rises.

Music, art and technology have been brought together in will.i.am’s spectacular remix of his hit track #thatPOWER for Lexus’s Amazing in Motion campaign. The unique interpretation was created live by the musician and global entrepreneur, using hundreds of motion- and sound-sensitive lights and lasers and three Lexus NX crossovers, piloted by a team of top stunt drivers.

will.i.am takes on the role of the frontman, battling against speed and rhythm to conduct and navigate the Lexus NX by hitting a sequence of laser targets.

The unprecedented event was shot in the course of one night on a disused airstrip in Spain. The stunt team included Niki Faulkner, whose movie credits include the James Hunt driving sequences in Rush, the 2013 feature about the battle for the 1976 Formula 1 championship.

For a professional sportsperson like Glenn McGrath, the only acceptable level of performance is one that excels in every way - that's why he remained a formidable opponent during his 14-year test career as an Australian fast bowler.

Similarly, the new NX premium crossover reflects Lexus' continuing pursuit of perfection, combining striking looks with the latest in-car technology. How does it measure up to Glenn's high expectations?

In this short film, we chat with Glenn about his impressions from driving the NX, and get an insight into what he looks for in his cars.

Describing the Lexus Hybrid Drive system on the NX 300h, Glenn says "it's good on fuel - half the time, you're sitting there wondering if it's on or not!" And with the majority of the NX 300h range equipped with E-Four all-wheel drive, its confidence-inspiring drive makes it "perfect around the streets."

The spacious and luxurious interior also makes the NX very appealing: "There's plenty of room," Glenn says, "It's very comfortable, very quiet." As a man who's accustomed to driving 11 hours from his home in Sydney, Australia, to his property in the far west of New South Wales, Glenn is well placed to assess the comfort and quality of a car, particularly on a long cruise.

The Lexus hallmarks of expert design, sublime style, and supreme craftsmanship have driven our ethos of Creating Amazing for years, both in our production vehicles and our concepts. For our latest project, we put a team master craftsmen to the test as we tackled our coolest concept yet: the ice-tyre Lexus NX.

Driving on four perfectly-finished, hand-sculpted tyres made from optically perfect, crystal-clear ice, the Lexus NX emerged from its own test of craftsmanship and quality - a five-day deep freeze at -30 degrees Centigrade that left it clad in a thick layer of ice.

Taking three months from start to finish, the ice-tyre Lexus NX is the product of a collaboration between Lexus UK and the ice-sculpting experts at Hamilton Ice Sculptors. The challenge was two-fold: how to recreate the Lexus five-twin-spoke alloy wheel and its Yokohama winter tyre with incredible precision, while also making a wheel and tyre that would support the NX's 2.2-tonne mass.

Like the highly-trained Lexus 'takumi', Hamilton Ice Sculptors combine generations of experience using traditional ice-sculpting methods with the latest technology to design and produce their works of art. Employing advanced techniques like laser-scanning, three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD), and multi-axis machining equipment, they could produce consistent wheel and tyre combinations ready for hand-finishing with traditional tools and techniques.

With the ice tyres ready and the NX suitably chilled in its icy chamber, the moment of truth saw the wheels and ice tyres mounted onto the frozen Lexus hybrid (which started first time, of course) ready for its first attempt at driving on ice. Part engineering, part art, this unique project came together to prove that anything is possible with the right combination of desire, skill and dedication.

Driving on ice is usually avoided at all costs, but for our latest project inspired by Lexus' Creating Amazing ethos, we took the concept and turn it around - what if the tyres were ice, rather than the road surface?

With winter fast approaching, the wheels were put in motion to create a unique, one-off Lexus NX hybrid in a collaboration between Lexus UK and the expert sculptors at Hamilton Ice Sculptors. The aim was to create, not only an amazing piece of art, but push the boundaries of engineering to do something that had never been attempted before.

Just as every Lexus vehicle benefits from the presence and influence of Lexus' highly-skilled 'Takumi' craftsmen, the ice-tyre NX would require similar levels of skill and attention to detail to achieve the perfect end result, while simultaneously employing modern, cutting-edge techniques to ensure consistency, quality and reliability.
