^thats nuts, fyi... i got 25+ city with a fairly heavy foot.
In Chicago city driving is a stop every block and 30mph speed limit between stops. Pretty much brake then 3/4 throttle, upshift, downshift, brake.

Yeah, I remember the endless Chicago traffic lights and the traffic jams on the Dan Ryan for stupid crap.

yes chicago does suck balls but this last tank, im at 2 bars with 298.6 miles which is the farthest i've gotten, i havent gone past 4k this whole tank and ive been rolling up to every light so it changes to green and i can keep my momentum, not going past 70 on the highway, using 6th as much as possiuble, and i used my remote start twice for two 15 min warm-up sessions. seems like i should be at like at least 340-380 driving like this, but my last tank only got me to 202 miles before getting to 2 bars. so i at least improved like a hundred miles but it still seems off. and i assume the toyota dealership checked calipers but i will take it somewhere else this week and have them check the brakes and fuel tank for leaks. I'm about to go fill up so i will post how many gallons it took to get my the almost-300 miles ive gone this tank

if you're shifting into high gear too soon/driving in at too low a speed that can also hurt fuel economy.

too low I think, let it wind up to about 2500 before shifting and try to go no lower than 1500 when cruising. Lower RPM than that on a high gear you're way out of the torque to move the car and end up adding more throttle to get it keep itself moving.

Something's wrong. You need to have it checked for vacuum leaks. You also need to make sure none of your calipers are dragging. A clogged up fuel filter can cause bad mileage. You only use high octane right?

32 combined or 32 highway Smaay? I get about 25-27 combined in the summer, but was seeing in the low 20's in the winter when I drove it.

The only time I got lower than 32 was when my MAFS was filthy and throwing a CEL. I don't drive that conservatively, and often burn off an hour just trying to go 12 miles in rush hour traffic. My transmission is in pretty shit shape right now and I'm almost at 210,000 miles. This place is almost nothing but huge hills. I'm getting 36 - 38 and I haven't done anything special. My tires are low so I get a little better grip in snow, I hit lift pretty regularly, and pretty much do everything you shouldn't do when trying to not waste gas. My last tank had 5 bars at just over 400 miles.

Are you buying from low tier gas stations? Are you replacing sensors with cheap, non-oem ones? Is your alignment horribly off? Are you taking a lot of really short trips and starting your car a lot? Dragging a parachute? The car's all stock, right? It just seems like something is really wrong with your car, or really right with mine.

I didn't know 36 - 38 was possible in a Celica GTS. Maybe if you drive downhill long enough lol.

I'm honestly not sure what I'm doing different, or how altitude or any other regional factors might affect it. I haven't modded the car in any way and it seems to me that my mileage should be lower than average.

-I usually take off quicker than everyone and get up to speed quick.
-I often get over 7,000 rpm in the first 3 gears (I commute and launch down the on-ramps)
-I use only Shell gas. 91 here.
-I don't drive around with a bunch of crap in the car, but I weigh 210, so it evens out.
-I don't turn the A/C on to defrost the windows, just heat.
-I don't let the car warm up before driving off, and it has been cold for a while.
-I drive over hills that are miles long, and steep.
-My tire pressure is lower than normal.

Am I doing the math wrong? Miles driven divided by gallons to fill up, right? Fill up until it stops and not trying to top off to round off the numbers.

:shrugs:

Got me. I would think it would have to be sensors, clogged filter, or something dragging somewhere. if it gets that bad. Unless you're just revving constantly at all the stops. You don't have any stuck pulleys or anything? No weird noises or rough idle?

honestly it could be all the coasting down the hills. DFCO really boosts MPG. I got an alltime best of 38 in my old Corolla 1.8 auto after coming out of a mountainous area. I got in the slow lane going up and coasted down in the fast lane and let momentum carry me up in the slow lane on the other side as much as possible and limped up in 4th at 45-50 to the next hill top.

I suppose it could be. Depending on the weather I climb the hills doing 75 or so, or if it's really bad out, 25. My 97 civic was getting 46 mpg doing the same things, plus a big ass pile of tools in the trunk. 20 just seems insanely low for stock. Like you could just watch the bars tick off by the minute. Whatever the issue is, I hope you get it figured out, that's got to be getting expensive.

When I took it to a Toyota dealership I told them my problem and they scanned the car and found no codes, and I'm sure they checked the calipers. My light came on ten minutes ago at 297.5 miles into this tank.
