I'm assuming that it is RWD so how about 3S-GTE (turbo motor) using the 93' MR-2 turbo tranny? It would be a great swap, although it is a heavy motor.

Or you could simply swap either a 3S-GE or a 5S-FE motor, again using a n/a MR-2 tranny.

Good luck with the project. Do you have any pics of it? I have a friend with a great condition 3rd gen Celica with the Kaminari kit, and its just beautiful.

He could use the 3S-GTE motor for the MR-2 and its tranny. I am pretty sure his generation Celica is RWD.

Now along with this swap, you'd have to upgrade your brakes and most likely your axles.

The MR2 Turbo uses a FWD tranny...

Yup, the engine is in the rear, and the tranny is hooked up to it the same way any FWD car's is. No driveshaft, just axles straight from the tranny. He might be able to pick up an AllTrac's AWD tranny, though, and use that.

Yup, but it's set up to be used as AWD, and you might be able to mod it to run as RWD only. I've heard of some WRXs doing that...

Id say do a 22r and add a custom turbo. 22r's can be found for $500 from a yard and it should be really easy to get it set up. Existing tranny should bolt up too.

the only thing I can say is search and search hard. that stuff is going to be 27 years old and almost impossible to find. Some places may still have a thing or two left in inventory.

If you are looking for a full restoration, use a 22R, if you are daring 22R-e (fuel injected). It would be more authentic.
