take the axles out first! remove the hubs from the suspension and take out the axle nut. then pull engine with tranny togeher. its so much easier.

Ya, I am taking the tranny out too. I am doing the 2zz swap, but I just didn't know, I couldn't seem to pop out the axle while the hub was still together. When I changed the motor in my corrolla you can just pop the axle out of the tranny with the hub still in place.
