Faulty gas gauge

My digital gas guage on the dashboard gives frequent incorrect fuel level readings.
Any ideas what the cause of this is, and what I can do to get it repaired?

Thanks.

it happens sometimes...make sure the cap is on tight enough to the point where it clicks
The first couple of bars when full will last a lot longer than when you get lower on the gauge.
^^^ Yup. My first bar doesn't disappear until after 80 miles or so.

Or are you talking about fluctuations? Like one minute you have 15 bars and the next minute you have 2 more or less? That's normal. Gasoline level gauges aren't the most accurate things. And don't be fooled into thinking it'll be more precise just because we have digital gauges.

Actually its alot more accurate than an analog gauge. The flucation with the top bars lasting awhile has to do with vapor content in the tank putting residual pressure on the sender intially and when that burns off the sender gives the amount
i have the same problems it looses 3 bar and it adds 2 later on..
you probably have some contaminants on your sensor. buy a bottle of valvoline maxlife fuel system cleaner. it has special cleaners in it to fix that particular problem.
I wasn't referring to losing a few bars, I mean it goes from full, to empty to full to half. Totally unpredictable and inaccurate.

I'll try the Maxlife cleaner. I had a suspision I may have pumped some fuel with contamination deposits in it. The pump at the fuel station kept clicking everytime I tried to fillup. I may have been at the bottom of the tank and I was pumping all the crap at the bottom.

Thanks TRD.
