For you LSD guys. You might want to look at this.

My buddies that opened a tuner garage were talking to me about Limited Slip. I mentioned the small choice we had as Celica owners. They said they have been having success with something called Phantom Grip on the Hondas and Acuras they have been tuning. I checked it out and they have it available for the Celica. I hear it works very well, and is substantially cheaper than the Mrs and Quaife. Just thought I would let you guys know there is something else out there.

Did a back search, and saw people talking about it. Saw some negative stuff, but I'm only hearing good things from the people using them. None of them run it on a Celica, but they have it on several Civics Boosted and lots of GSr's running Turbo.

^^^ yes and there is a reason for that
I think a guy on Spyderchat has one in his Spyder. i fanyone here is interested, you could wander on over and take a look http://www.spyderchat.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=17372&highlight=phantom+grip

It's on a turbo'd car too.

And why would that be Celikill? Do you have any first hand experience running this on your car? Hmmmm? They don't run it on any Celis, because they just started taking them in to their garage.

Super Street and Sport compact showed no issues with durability etc..

;)
I wouldn't touch that think with a 10 foot pole.
Mica,

I know you have a true LSD, but what are your experiences with the PG?
#1 its not a real LSD, so who knows how it would work other than in a straight line

#2 the thing works by installing over the spider shaft in the differential. When you hit the gas, the spider shaft wedges into the two blocks of the PG, pushing them apart. These in turn press into the output gears, creating a LSD effect. There is no way in hell I would want the spider shaft in my diff constantly wearing against hardened steel plates. You would end up wearing right through it and causing a catastrophic diff failure.

And if you follow this link, you will find the guy using it in his Turboed Mr2 for 2 years. No Catastrophic failure yet.

If you read the articles on Super Street etc about it, you will find out how it works other than in a straight line. ;)
Quoting Super Street as a source is the first problem. Second, for hardly any more money you can get an MRS LSD. Install is probably cheaper on the MRS part since it doesn't require disassembling the diff. Basically, there are no upsides to the Phantom Grip in my eyes.

Quoting it solely to understand how it works on a curve. What is the problem with reading about how something works? And how much is the MRS? The PG is 299. Im not trying to be abrasive dude, it's just that you have no first hand knowledge of the things, and you are going out of your way to **** on it.

Do I need to get hit in the boys with a hammer to know that it will hurt?

Point is that it uses springs to compress on the stock diff. Those springs will wear out quickly and also will wear the input shaft.

Finding someone that will install this thing (since you have to take the Diff appart) will be costly.

Those people that have had no problems with the Phantom Grim probably don't drive their cars everyday.

EDIT: Oh and stop being cheap. You get what you pay for......

Dude,

First of all, I'm not cheap. I just like to find out why/how things work instead of making wild assumptions.

Second of all if you read my orig message, I know guys installing this in other cars, so install is not a problem. And your point about wear on the springs is wrong because of the link to the guy using it on his Mr2 for 2 years.

I'm smart enough to know you get what you pay for, but I don't shell out 1000's more for Bose audio when I know I can get better sound for much less.

I believe a MRS LSD can be had for around $600, less if you find a used one. Lets say two hours labor to install the Phantom Grip on top of a standard diff install, so an extra $160. Now you're talking $140 difference. Is that amount of money really worth it? A helical diff is a proven, reliable and trusted method for limited slip on a FWD car. Super Street are total ricers known more for photos than anything. They were probably paid by Phantom Grip to print what they did. Readers of that mag would be the kind of people trying to cut corners on everything. Again, there just are no upsides to this as far as I'm concerned.

Again,

I quoted superstreet SOLELY for the purpose of understanding how it works. That is all.
From Sport Compact:

"Although the PG works by causing a binding action on the Spider gears, the heat treatment and alloy of steel used for the blocks helps avoid damage to the differential. Phantom Grip has been in long-term use on the Hyundai Factory Works Motorola Cup Tiburon racers with no problems."

A race car means it likely sees about 500-2000 miles a year (5k max), depending on what i kind of racing we are talking here. If by long term use they mean ever 5 years... That's still only 10k miles.

I don't know about you guys but i put that on in 10-12 months. not 5 years....
Again,

The link to the daily driver mr2 turbo. And that was just one article I quoted. There are a bunch on daily driver NIssans etc...
