Please forgive my newbie question here.

I am getting an electronic compass/thermometer for my car (a PNI WayFinder v2000). Now, it normally plugs into the 12v cigarette lighter, but there is an optional accessory for hardwiring to the car's power source. Isn't this just a wire with two loose ends? I guess my real question is: how would I go about wiring a device which runs off the cigarette lighter, to get power whenever the car accessory power is on. Do I need to wire to the fuse box, and if anyone can provide detailed instructions, that would be just great. Thanks!

You can wire it to the wire that powers the cigarette lighter. It is only powered when the car is on.

what i did for my power invertor was to buy a cig lighter expander. which lets you connect 2 cig powered devices to the sigle outlet. then i diassembled the expander and hardwired it to a 12 volt lead.

When I hardwired my radar detector, I ran a second cig lighter in parallel with the first one, ran it through the ashtray and mounted the smartcord thing there.
