There are two significant catches, however. First is getting the hydrogen. Industrial gas suppliers sell hydrogen in cylinders but very few filling stations exist today. California has the most at 13 pilot stations run by utilities and carmakers, and plans some 170 commercial ones by 2010. The cost varies too, from $1 to $20 a kilo. A gallon of gasoline has the same energy content as a kilo of hydrogen, but vehicles using the latter get two to three times higher mileage.
That's all I got for now. It's an old article.

Big whoop dee doo. Toyota has been leasing its hydrogen fuel cell highlander hybrids to various entities for like 4 or 5 years now. I'd be much more impressed to see some crash test ratings on a car with a full hydrogen tank :D

Depending on who you listen to, hydrogen is the fuel of the future.

The interior would make Robocop proud.

yeah, so much worse than 14-gallons of petrol under your seat... Cars are intensely dangerous objects to begin with, I don't think adding hydrogen is going to make it any worse. parallel step, maybe.

actually Hydrogen isn't as volatile as gasoline, by any means.

First Drive: 2009 Honda FCX Clarity

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drives/FirstDrives/articleId=123662
First Impressions:
The 2009 Honda FCX Clarity is fun to drive and also fun to be seen in. Best of all, the hydrogen fuel-cell sedan gets you where you want to go without burning a drop of gasoline.

* Hydrogen fuel cell; 68 mpg
* Electric motor with 189 lb-ft of torque
* Zero tailpipe emissions
* Futuristic design and engineering
There you have it.

Yes and no. The problem with hydrogen is the high pressure and large tanks required. Its not so much that its more volatile as it is the sheer size of the assembly. A gas tank is pretty easy to tuck inside the frame. No so with 3 or 4 full suzed hydrogen cylinders. They get pretty big. The tanks themselves are pretty damn robust, but the valves and plumbing are a bit of a weak point.

I'm sure they will figure out a way to put the valves in a protected location with some sort of pressure biased auto shutoff if there is a breach or the SRS system senses an impact though.

One cool thing about hydrogen is that is disperses into the atmosphere instead of pooling like gasoline. On the other hand, if you get an ignition source near a leak, a 5000 PSI stream of hydrogen has a hell of a lot more blowtorch effect than a 45 or less PSI stream of gasoline.

BTW - notice that the "customers" is in quotes. Honda is probably going to very closely control who gets these cars, just like Toyota did with the Hydrogen powered highlander.

It's more volatile, when ignited the flame could be invisible too...which makes it so much more dangerous.

I guarantee they all go to whiny Hollywood bitches who get all sanctimonious about what they drive.

So Leonardo DiCaprio is going to get 6 of them.

More likely they will go to universities, corporations, power companies, and/or municipalities.
