SEMA urges action against Oregon bill that prohibits sale of aftermarket parts

At the request of Oregon Governor Theodore Kulongoski, the Oregon
Speaker of the House has introduced legislation (H.B. 2186) to
prohibit the sale and distribution of aftermarket motor vehicle parts
if alternatives are available that "decrease greenhouse gas emissions
from motor vehicles."

The bill is primarily focused on aftermarket tires and would authorize
the Environmental Quality Commission to implement enforcement
regulations, likely based on a rolling resistance calculation.

According to SEMA, which strongly opposes the bill:

*H.B. 2186 would regulate vehicle fuel economy, an authority reserved
to the federal government

*H.B. 2186 could ban tires that may have improved performance,
handling, or appearance features, based solely on a rolling resistance
rating. In addition, this program could easily distract consumers from
focusing on more important safety issues such as tire inflation and
overloading of vehicles.

*H.B. 2186 would force consumers to purchase on original equipment
manufacturers (OEM) tires because the program essentially exempts
OEM-selected tires and unfairly implies that they are superior to
aftermarket products

*H.B. 2186 could prohibit aftermarket parts designed to either
personalize or optimize specific vehicle performance attributes
including handling, towing, suspension, fuel economy, etc.

*H.B. 2186 provides broad authority to government regulators and could
limit a range of aftermarket parts currently available to consumers
based on the subjective determination of government regulators.

itll never pass, painting a car a certain color is noty going to change how it producess emissions and the ban of aftermarket parts wont pass either,theres too many aftermarket parts that improve the safety of the vehicle lol.

Um, no thanks. Taxing something enver gets the revenue they plan out of it because people will use/purchase less because of the tax. Then they just raise the tax on that item or create a new one on something else.

Subsidies are tax money as well. If they want to subsidize something (e.g. ethanol) they have to tax someone/something somewhere.

Screw that. Let the market decide what fails and what doesn't. Anything subsidized, by definition, is not profitable nor fit for the market.

HAHA, so if cars are lighter colours that will reduce the amount of time people use their ac?? WOW, if it's hot out people are gonna crank them up NO MATTER what colour their car is. The sun hits the glass and even turns white cars hot enough to cook stuff in. Just go sit in a car with white leather with some short shorts on and it'll still burn your legs. If it's really hot or just warm people are gonna use the ac ALL the time.


And about the after market psrts, I have a fully custom exhaust and a CAI but my Celi's emissions are still CLEANER than some cars that are still 100% stock, who are they kidding?
