Just thought I'd add a couple of thoughts to this.
Preheating the trans is not just to raise the viscosity of the oil, it also helps to break up and remove all the nastiness that has built up in the trans.
I noticed someone asked last year about not changing fluid unless it was done regularly. The answer is, maybe. The reason some people (especially older guys) say NOT to change the fluid unless it has been done regularly is because sometimes that gunk will build up on leaking seals (actually preventing them from leaking). Then you come along and swap the fluid, the seals start leaking and etc etc bad stuff happens and the trans is shot. It's more true for automatics than manuals, however you should be ok as long as you're under 100k. If not just be prepared for the possibility.
While you CAN'T overfill the manual tranny when filled correctly you CAN overfill an automatic.
Keep in mind that when you drain the ATF that the torque does NOT drain out. This is normal, but if you take the fluid specs from an off the shelf manual it may be higher than you need to put in. CHECK YOUR DIPSTICK! Overfilling an automatic transmission CAN and probably WILL destroy it!
I purchased it from Advanced Auto Parts, so Im sure any auto store will have one (see picture 4). You will need 2.4 quarts of oil.. so purchase 3 quarts and you'll be fine (incase
Nice write up. Toyota has some manual oil pump for around $11 and they also stock the Redline MT-90 which rings out for about a little more than $14 per quart. If you are more of an OEM guy then you can opt for the Toyota gear oil...but thats $21 something...
Just drained Eneos 75w-90 (GL-5....) out of my c60 today. Replaced with LWSP. Seemed to have some immediate reduction in notchy-ness. I didn't have any grinding but didn't want that GL-5 in there anymore.
Hi, thanks for the excellent guide, I changed out my transmission gear oil today at roughly 124,000 miles. My symptoms included:
Gear grind downshifting into fourth
Gear grind downshifting into third
General notchiness in shift (I actually like this, it doesnt feel mushy like my corolla)
Squeaking in shift from any gear to second
Unfortunately, my synchronizers are probably shot beyond help for fourth gear as that still grinds, BUT my third does NOT grind anymore! I am not sure when the trans oil had been changed before that, but as you can see it's BLACK lol.
That blue alien blood colored liquid is the Redline Lightweight Shockproof oil (LWSP), which, after many searches, I have concluded to use.
For the squeaking gear, it was coming out from underneath the car with the shift selector mechanism (Not sure what it's called). I wasn't sure at first what was causing the noise, but I had a friend hop into the car and shift for me and once I noticed the parts moving I sprayed it with silicone lubricant and the noise is now gone. Thanks again for the install guide it was very helpful.
Just a quick question guys...
Would it be possible to make a trans oil change if i simply park my car with the nose hanging over the parking cliff hill (don't know the word for this). Would i be able to reach this drain plugs and all from under the car? On the hill..
Sorry for the confusion...
I tried it the way i asked yesterday. Here's an image doing it my way with no lift
It was a success. It is possible to reach everything you need the way you can see in the picture.
This guide was very helpfull, it made the change alot easier and faster. And yes, i did make quite a mess even tho i knew what was coming You can see my mess in the pic abowe
My personal choice with trans oil was Amsoil 75W-90 API GL4 Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube. I had a very big issue obtaining this in Europe. Found only 1 company in UK that had it and was willing to ship, but i paid $110 for it, with a 20% discount :/
Anyways... I am very pleased with the oil so far.I can feel imidiate effect on the smoothness, especially when downshifting and going into 5th and 6th gear. I wen't for a pretty rough test ride, and when everything heated up, it was even easier to shift. I am very very happy that i have done this. AMAZING! I have this car for more than 3 years now and have never changed trans oil, and have no clue when did the last owner did this if even... Don't think he ever did lol I have also sprayed the shifting mechanism on the tranny itself with WD-40, and will also clean the shifter linkeage under the boot soon.
QUESTION:
I have around 180,000+ miles on my GTS(Manual Transmission). I bought the car used with about 90,000 miles on it from a Car Dealership so I'm sure they probably did a drain-and-fill on the transmission fluid. My question is, Would doing a transmission flush mess up the car or should I just do a drain-and-fill?
