How do I / What's the best + safest way to check that my injectors are operating properly?

ie: Not leaking, Reasonable spray pattern, etc...

Thanks.

Background:

OilBurning1ZZ... oil smells like fuel. PCV Valve appears to be working like a normal check valve. I understand that fuel in oil is often a symptom of a vehicle that burns oil, but my car doesn't appear to burn oil until the oil starts smelling like fuel.

So I wonder if my car burns oil because it gets diluted with fuel or if it the oil smells like fuel because it burns oil.

oil consumption has nothing to do with a fuel injector issue regardless of the fuel smell. Its your rings and blow by that your describing.

wehn your oil control rings go bad like early 1zz's then you leak oil into combustion chamber and possibly unburnt fuel can drip down cylinder walls causing oil to smell of gas.

chillan420: Understood. Dead Horse. However setting my underlying issue aside and for topic completion -- understanding that it would be a waste of time in my position -- how would I verify proper injector operation?

Soon2beriding: He has addressed, in detail, why my oil smells like gas.

I'm hoping he can help out with the original question as well.

Honestly, at this point I'm not going to bother. I just want to know...

I'm more interested in finding out how to verify its not leaking + spraying properly without covering the engine-bay in fuel.

The last/first time I diagnosed an injector issue (and replaced the injector) it was a messy smelly affair -- I damaged an O-Ring on reinstall, and I puddled fuel all over the engine + intake manifold on my short 30 second test drive...

Re: Fuel Pressure Gauge... I picked up a fuel pressure gauge weeks ago but it looks like its meant for old-school carburetors only. It's a combination vacuum / fuel-pressure gauge but the instructions read like it will only read the vacuum generated from a carburetor/venturi instead of the positive pressure of a fuel pump. What's a proper fuel pressure gauge one look like? I've seen the permanently installed ones

If your injectors are staying open longer than they should then there are tell-tale signs.

Check your spark plugs, they will be dark black if your running rich from too much fuel.
Your exhaust will be spewing black deposits as well as smelling like fuel.
In extreme conditions your actually going to notice your oil dipstick get higher.

As for actually taking out your injectors and flow testing them...no impact no idea on that one.

So I wonder if my car burns oil because it gets diluted with fuel or if it the oil smells like fuel because it burns oil.
Option 2, welcome to the world of the oil consuming 1zz

Mileage is ok... I still get 29-30mpg / 7.8-8.0 L/100km driving in and on the fringes of the city.

Re: Exhaust... hard to say, I can't see what's coming out of the tail pipe when I'm driving. I'm always quick to judge other driver's maintenance habits based on the appearance of their exhaust but truth be told my own may look just as bad but I can't tell either.

Anyway, There's no soot on the bumper though there is some inside the exhaust tip but I imagine that's normal. Aside from that, the cat smells like its starting to get fouled -- doesn't smell like unburned fuel but doesn't smell normal either, at least at idle anyway.

Plugs have never shown signs of oil... Typically they look somewhere between 'normal' and slightly 'carbon deposit'ed at worst (when compared to those diagnostic posters). I replace them every year or two out of some silly OCD even when they still look normal and have life on them yet.
