I have fallen victim to the misshift!

And to make it worse I drive a GT there is no excuse for what happened. I have never owned an automatic, I have driven manuals for the last 6 years and never had a problem.

So here's the story: Im driving home last night at about 3am with my girl and her brother in the car. As I start from a redlight this guy in a Mazda Protege flies by me almost side swiping me. Well this really pissed me off so I went to downshift to catch him (stupid I know) but instead of hitting 3rd gear I slammed it into 1st at about 55mph. Every light on the display comes on immediately and there is a metallic grinding noise from the engine. I lose power and roll to a stop. The car will not even crank.

Im getting it towed to a dealer next week, any idea about how much this is gonna run me?

damn, sorry to hear that.
its about 5500 dollars at a dealership out of warranty.
How the Hells did you get it into 1st gear at that speed? I have a hard time getting it into 1st at 10mph.
I think in all the misshift post i'v read in the past 2 years, that's a first. not the GT part......the shift into 1st gear doing 55 or so. WTF....how could not happen? there is no way in hell i can even put into 1st while doing over 5-10mph. how did u do it at 55?? i'm guessing u slamed it it.

can u say 14-15k overrev. well i'm not going to be mean and say "learn to drive" cuz i'v been through it. Your only bet is to take it to the dealer. when u do, TAKE OFF ALL YOUR MODS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
good luck at the dealer man
I agree, I have no idea how I got it into first. I didnt do anything different, I was in 4th, revmatched, an attempted to shift to third and bang! went into first.
I appreciate not getting the "learn how to drive" speech. I know how to drive I just made an honest mistake and am suffering(learning) from it I guess.

I am well out of warranty, my car has about 74,000.00 miles on it. $5500.00 wow! thats steep for a poor college kid. I might have to let the ol' girl stay parked for a while. I could get a new engine for $4843.26. That might even be the better deal rather then messing with one thats been misshifted.

Thanks for the input!
Chris
Don't forget to disconnect your battery to clear your ecu. Otherwise the computer will tell the dealer that you overreved and you can forget any warranty repairs.
that will be pointless. cuz when they take a look at the engine, they will know for SURE that it has been overreved. there won't be any other explanation for it. 55mph in 1st gear:AF:

there is nothing he could do (except take all the mods off) and take it to the dealer. it's a 50/50 chance. i surgest u start to pray to god(if u do believe in 1) they will fix it.
Like what someone pointed out, take off as much of the mods as you can. Make the car look as "stock" to best of your ability. This is major warranty work you require and making it look stock will give you a higher chance of getting it repair then say coming in with a modified car.

Downshifted from what 4th or 5th? Because 5th to 3rd is easy because you can't shift in to reverse, but 4th to 3rd is kinda goofy your hopping that gear. Man I've grinded a few times and seen my tach shoot up but I've always put in the clutch in time. Good luck to you.
Man, none of you pay any attention! He said he has 74,000 miles on his car, so it hasn't been covered under warranty for a long time. Taking modifications off his car and resetting his battery would be a huge waste of time because his car isn't under warranty anymore.

Pujambo17, you should be able to find a 1zz engine from a junkyard with less miles than the one that you blew for not too much money. If you are a poor college student, I would reccomend that you invest some money on a shop repair manual and do the engine swap your self. If nothing else, this whole thing can be a mechanical learning experience for you. You may need a new transmition as well.

I would keep looking at different salvage yards for engines. $4800 is super steep for a stripped down, used engine, are you sure that the salvage yard wasn't quoting you a complete engine with all the assesories? All you need is the assembled engine block, you can re-use all the other stuff that you already have.
on the old transmission....drain the gear oil and look for large metal chunks. That'll probly give you an idea wheather or not you need to grab a new one.
I am not sure, but in today's vehicles one can't so easily downshift to 1st gear while the vehicle is moving. There must be some sort of protections.

But in some Japanese videos, those professional drivers can achieve it if they raise the rev in neutral gear they can then downshift to 1st gear .... Ferrari F355, Impreza, Lancer Evo ... all those models.

I remember reading a post in here telling us to do something under the bonnet to make shifting to 1st very smoothly. Can anyone post in here again. Many thanks.

Took the words right out of my mouth
Dang, that's horrible. A used engine will probably keep your wallet from going into shock. You most likely slammed it in there with the power of rage.
hey bros , thats why its safer to get a auto......:chuckles: :chuckles:
i am very sorry to hear that good luck at the dealership and let us know how it goes.
Thanks for the input. The 4800.00 quote is for a brand new engine not used. But I am absolutely looking for alternatives that are a little lighter on the wallet.

Undertaking an engine swap myself is something that I would love to do if I had the tools and place to do it. I handle everything I can when it comes to my car but this might be out of my league.

Times like these make me wish I wasnt poor that way I could just rebuild the engine to take full advantage of DD's turbo when its available.

You know its weird how an automobile grows on you. I cant imagine what the next month or 2 will be like without it. Until its return I will be pimpin in my father's early 80's style Buick Century complete with Autozone chrome hubcaps and white wall tires. :) (Help me God!!!!)
