Well, i was just driving down woodward going back home from Kroger when I see a fixed up Blue GTS w/action package a few cars in front of me. It had an exhaust, was lowered, bigger rims, and most likely had an intake. I haven't really raced anybody in my MR2 besides a caddy, so i thought this would be fun. I decided to creep up next to it and as I did, he downshifted and took off... The funny thing was, the upcoming light just turned red! So, i line up next to him revving up my engine... he did the same! I was just thinking to myself... Don't BOG!!! I keep the rpm's at around 4700. The light turns green, and we're off. I could hear his front tires squeel as he drops the clutch. I on the other hand slip the clutch a lil and release and my car jumps about 1 car length ahead. I shift to 2nd at around 6k and as i look in my sideview mirror I can see the GTS (most likely still in 1st) pull up a bit as he hits lift. Just about a second later, my turbo comes to full spool and now I'm about 2-3 car lengths ahead of him. Then he hits lift again and his car closes the gap a lil. I shift to 3rd at around 6500 and now it seems like i'm really pulling on him. At the end of 3rd i was a good 3-4 car lengths ahead of him. That's when i started to slow down. He caught up, looked over and gave me a thumbs up. This was probably the best race i've had in a long time! It's kinda interesting... cuz i didn't realize how hard the gts pulls at the top of the rpm band until i actually raced one. The power in my MR2 tapers off after 6k (redline at 7k).

hey mr2's in that body model come NON trubo right? cuz i had a go at it on 202 in west chester a few days ago, and i took it fairly easy, then me n the guy talked side by side, windows down thingy, tryina keep the same speed, but i didnt get to ask him anythig other than... if he wanted to do it again, but he was gettin off on da next exit, so he said maybe next time and that was it :) we raced from 60-about 125, and im sure the lighter, turbo mr2 would blow me away, so im assuimg they have non turbos also correct? cuz i won by a very good margin.

Yes, you are correct. They did have an NA model which put out something like 140 hp. The MR2's are actually heavier than you think. They're close to 2800lbs. Plus they have a 18-20% drivetrain loss, so a turbo mr2 is actually only putting out about 160+ hp. Stock for a stock a turbo mr2 and a GT-S, both with M/T's, is definitely a driver's race... but once the turbo guy starts adding parts, then it becomes A LOT faster.

Nice race and nice MR2 there. My friend actually just sold his 91 MR2 Turbo in that "Faded Red" that you have there...hehehe...heard the Red ones fade the fastest of all the other colors.

The NA MR2 is a bore to drive...however the MK1 NA is fun...

Great kill! Those cars rock!!! Second fastest Toyota sold in the US. Looking for one for my girlfriend and restoring an 86.
Yes that bodystyle had a n/a version with the 5SFE motor(same as the 90-98 GT Celica motor).

Faded red?? Excuse me?? hehehe j/k :gap: Actually, you're right, the red ones do fade the fastest. The previous owner garaged it all its life, though so it still looks pretty good! Besides... that's what Zaino is for :).

Good Run Dnd, I know about the power tapering off in the MR2s, My 91T had K&N intake, gutted diffuser, full greddy exhaust elminating the last cat, nology hot wires, TRD SS, HKS SSBOV, cheapy Zenier Diode FCD, and 17psi. Even with those mods It had lots of pull from about 3-5K and then power definitely tapers off. That car was very quick =), I've had lots of good wins, 93 RX7 TT, 300ZX TT, Countless ricers, Also did a roll on with my friends crazy T78 93 Supra, hung on to him from 20-50 then he left me like a cheap whore. My closest race ever was against XFACTORWRX, he's pretty deadly with his WRX and it takes mad skillz to keep up with that foo off the line.

here was my pride and joy sitting on 95's and ST springs. I miss that car sometimes but FUKIN SCARY around corners, snap oversteer is not fun. ;)

thanks for all the compliments guys! :) Revhappy... i've heard a lot of stories about that whole snap oversteer issue in the MR2... however, i have yet to experience it... I don't know if i'm just being extra cautious in the corners or what. What does it take for the back to cut loose? Let's say you're merging onto the freeway on one of those big loops (close to 360 deg), can your back just break loose if you're going a moderate speed? Or do you really have to push it? BTW... that's a nice MR2 u got there... why didn't u just keep it and get a td06sh or something?

Beautiful car. I'm trying to find one with a blown motor in my area, N/A or turboed. So far no luck. :(

If you want to experience snap oversteer, bring the car to an autocross event. You'll experience just about everything you want to know about the car if you drive it hard enough.

At the last autox event, there was a guy that was nice enough to let me drive his car for a fun run at the end of the day. He had a 91 MR2. That thing was fun as hell! The fun fun part was when I spun out like a mad man...it was the biggest spin out I've ever done. 2nd time in a MR2 too. Well I blame it on his tire setup. He had Falken Azenis in the front and something else less grippy in the back. The car gave no indication of losing grip...just happened like that...next thing I know...I'm going, ooooo boy......heheheh. Anyway...I love MR2s...it's really sad that many people use it as their beaters.
