So I got my oil changed Friday evening, and afterwards, I was driving to my girlfriend's house. About half way there, my oil light came on, smoke started coming out of the engine bay, and the car died. I got it to the side of the highway, and oil is coving the front, passenger side of the motor, and the car won't start. Like, when I try to start it, I heard the starter motor whirring, but the engine won't turn. The oil drain plug, and the oil filter are both still there, so that's not the source of the oil leak. Any ideas where I should start looking?

Valve cover seal looks fine, the oil looks like it's coming from lower down, possibly around the head gasket, or somewhere on the block. =/

Wasn't racing, but I had downshifted to pass someone. I went from 5 to 3, going about 70 miles an hour, which shouldn't be enough to blow the motor, I wouldn't think.

that could be the cause... should've went down to only 4.... would've been enough to pass someone. I would never downshift to 3rd going 70mph in my car...

thats still not enough to blow it.... no where near.... GT can probably go to 80-90 in 3rd.... so 70mph is well under the redline in 3rd...
See, that's what I would have thought too. But, it turns out there is indeed a hole in the block... that's commonly caused by over-revving. =/

Looks like it's new engine time.

throw in a 2ZZ.... Sounds like your engine had some oil pressure problems or something for it to just throw a rod or it WAS over reved lol...

Yeah, I'm thinking oil pressure problems... This was the first oil change the car's had since my friend had parked it forever ago, so I'm thinking that possibly the fresh oil loosened up some crap, which then clogged up an oil passage.

no it shouldnt be the cause IF his motor was running fine. 3rd gear cut off is around 88mph in a GT-S. even for a GT, at 70 downshifting to 3rd is nothing to worry about.

i guess for me, i've always had this bad gut feeling that downshifting to 3rd or any gear 10 mph before that gear ends, it would be putting an instant amount of strain on the engine. Probably not enough to blow it, but if done a lot, it could possible cause some type of damage.. It's just my way of thinking..... I downshifted to 3rd going 70-72mph and while it didn't damage anything, it felt like the engine was put under a lot of strain instantly.... scares me.. lol! I like to play it safe.. :)
