My New Motor *Updated With Pics!*

So, as many of you may know, my 1zz has been burning a lot of oil for the past half a year. Because of this, I have decided to replace it. This is my daily driver, and my only car... because of this the stock motor has racked up about 107k miles. Sooo... it's time for a change. In the intrest of keep this simple, I have decided to stick with the 1zz, so feel free to keep all the "should have gone with a 2zz" comments to yourself; it ain't gonna happen. :gap:

So, I got myself a used '03 1zz from a nc.org member. It has 60k on, 80% of the miles on the car were highway, and the motor had regular oil changes with mobile 1, all in all I'm pretty confident in this motors reliability. The work will be done this friday at East Coast Speed Factory, a shop with a successfull history of 1zz work.

All installed:

ECSF installed a "TRD" (not really TRD) Oil Catch Canister, slightly used MAFS, slightly used K&N Filter, Oil Pressure Sensor Remote locate line and fittings, HotShot Header, Toyota Racing Development Carbon Fiber Engine Cover, Denso Iridium Spark Plugs, Gripforce Stage 1 Clutch Kit, and MWRs Lightweight Chromoly Flywheel, Toga Performance High-Volume Oil Pump, AEM Lightweight Alternator Pulley, Catco High Flow Catalytic Converter, and a slightly used pre-cat o2 sensor.

Needless to say: I can't wait.

I'll do my best to document the process, and you can expect a good amount of pics to be posted this weekend.

Lastly, I really want to thank the many nc.org members who helped me with this project, both with questions answered and advice given.... thanks again for those who helped me the most: Boosted2.0, Blue Bomber, Lormax, Dave Draper, fusi0n, Matt @ MWR and of course Steve @ East Coast Speed.

Having an oil pressure gauge is the key. If I hadn't installed one I probably would have spun a bearing long before now. You have to keep a constant watch on the oil level (either via the gauge or regular dipstick checks). If it goes down fairly quickly (mine is roughly 1-2 quarts a week  ), and you're sure it's not leaking (a good visual inspection usually works to check for leaks), then you know it's being burnt. Also, a black sooty buildup around the tailpipe is another tell-tale sign.

did the engine arrive already? the guy who picked it up kept messing around with the vinyl straps so i had to chain it around one side so it wouldn't move. i tried my best though..haha :gap: i hope you enjoy it man..
Hell yeah, arrived today. Everything looks fine according to ECSF. I'll give you a call tomorrow.

Rebuild of your '00 engine is kinda pointless, toyota redeigned the 1zz after '03 for better oil distribution so you might as well get a replacement engine that wown't have the same oil burning problem... PM me and we can chat. I got this done fairly cheap for a few reasons.... which is why I could afford soo many goodies! ;)

Any idea if this is the case with the 2ZZ? Also, awesome news about your project. I can't wait to see how everything works out. I'm assuming that, eventually, you will be putting some TPR parts in. Maybe some MWR stuff too? Are you planning the PFC maybe?

Hey! Quit reading my mind like that!! :chuckles:
Yeah, as soon as I can I'll be adding a TPR intake, TPR exhaust, and I might be a guinea pig for some other TPR stuff. Aside from that I do already have a MWR flywheel going in there, and yeah.... once I get the cash together this beast is going to be controlled via either a PFC or E-manage.

Lastly, I have to say it, should have gone with the 3ZZ :chuckles:

Keep us updated bro!
You ba$tard!! :furious:
Maybe because I don't have the deep pockets and killer sponsorships of some other... more fortunate board members. ;)
And rest assured, full updates will be posted as soon as possible.

Yeah, I figured as much. But hey, more power to ya man! It's gonna be a killer car when this whole thing is said and done!

Thanks! I'm keeping my fingers crossed as far as the install goes too!! Not that I have any reason to doubt the guys at East Coast Speed Factory.... it's still a little nerve-racking. :scared:

Dude! You set me up with Watkins! Without you I would have had a much harder time finding a good company to get the motor from point A to point B!

... that was you, right?

Well everyone, it's all said and done.
The install went pretty darn smoothly... we only ran into two problems during the install (both of which were quickly solved by the very knowledgeable guys at East Coast Speed) and one after the swap on the ride home (which was temporarily solved by me, a paper clip, and some bubblegum :crazy2: )

We started at 7:30am, and had the old engine out and the new engine prepped (header/cluch/flywheel mounted) by noon. Got back from lunch at 1ish, and had everything in by 7pm. Engine fired up on the first try, it was great. All in all I was very impressed by the guys who make up East Coast Speed Factory: Mike, Rob and Steve. These guys not only know their stuff, but they're hard working, determined, easy going and best of all: passionate about their work. Needless to say I would reccomend them to anyone close enough to get to them (take me for example: I drove to their shop from 200 miles away in the middle of a snow storm!!)

Oh yea, the car.
It feels awesome. The Monkey Wrench Racing flywheel is, as far as I can tell, the perfect daily driver flywheel. It's light, the engine revvs quickly and freely, and feels very eager at WOT.... but it's not soo light that starting from first gear is a pain, and with a quickshfter and an equally quick right hand, downshifts and gear changes aren't too hard either. Thanks to the HotShot header, the low end is a little more torquey and it pulls nicely even from low RPMs. Naturally, the high RPM band is sensational.... ballsy... kinda pissed off... and like I said before: very eager. The Gripforce (re-badged Exedy) clutch is also very nice. Engagement is smooth with a clearly noticable spot where the clutch grabbs, and when grabs, it does so hard but not soo suddenly that it's jerky. And lastly, thanks to the Toga Performance oil pump (which as Mike from ECSF explains moves more oil... more volume, but does not make the average oil pressure higher than stock) my oil pressure is rock solid. No deviations or drops in pressure when cornering at all... not even a little. I can't wait to get this thing on a soloII track

I have some pics that I'll try to get posted up tomorrow!

To be honest, I don't think lift is all that cool.... :hide:
I like being able to rev higher, but with a properly built 1zz I can do that! I like the linear power and torque delivery of the 1zz more than the 2zz, and like spike said.... it's all about the toga pump. ;)
I'm a big fan of the underdog, and I guess I want to see just how much I can get from the 1zz without f/i.... so eventually (hopefully) you might see me with a ported/polished and fully built, high-revving head (that actually makes power above 7krpm) and a ported throttle body. Lastly I could use the PFC to tune the engine and up the limiter. I would think at that point I would be at a pretty good power level. And then.... I might go another less travled route: a supercharger. ;)

Ahhh, man you can just buy those at Wal Mart... they're an air/water separator for air compressors. I'd sell you mine but I'm missing an o-ring.

Ive see some on ebay..are these the same ones? thanks
Well, first off be sure to take what spike said into consideration. With that said, I can tell you that the ones you see on ebay are fine (I got mine there). But the reason I got mine was because my stock cat was most likely clogged because my engine had been burning oil for the past 30k miles. So I wanted to be sure to have a fresh cat for my new motor. If you don't need one, like spike said, don't get one.
