I have a GT (obviously, *points to name*) so I don't have the premium system. If I want to just install a new HU, do I need to have an amp hooked up too?

I saw an old post where someone said there was a "new wiring harness that lets you use a new HU with the stock amp."

So, do I need an amp to just replace the stock HU?

No you don't need an amp, it's not necessary in fact if you get a quality headunit with decent pre-out it's going to be more than enough if you keep the factory speakers.

However, I say gut the entire car and do everything over that's what I did.

Your fine just replacing the HU.
The stock speakers are pretty good compared to other after markets.

I would just get a nice sub/amp combo if I were looking into completing the setup.

BUt not to digress, your fine with just replacing the headunit.
