Need to get some opinions on my new ideas regarding an in-dash tablet.

I've been wanting to get a tablet for my personal use (outside of the car). I had already fabricated a dash piece for my nook, but it required removing the whole center dash as if you were replacing the radio just to take the tablet out.

I traded my radar detector for the nexus 7 and decided I'd try something new.

I made a regular mold for the nexus 7 out of fiberglass then glassed that into our bezel. I came up with an idea to use a magnet to hold it in place. I chose to use the cabinet drawer snap in snap out magnet things that way it's very easy and fast to remove but it's still flush and looks good.

Here are some pictures of the work in progress. I've removed the velcro strips and added another snap in snap out magnet.

Just bought a right angle aux cord and an up angle charger for the tablet to fit through those holes. I'm going to fiberglass a little pocket for the tablet to slide into so if I have to brake suddenly or get in an accident the tablet doesn't go flying.

Honestly man, im planning on buying the pogo dock and jb welding it into my dash. I initially tried a snap in mount that usually holds the tablet suctioned to the roof, but it started to break. Honestly the whole thing is a pain in the ass but I destroyed my wiring harness so I have no other choice. Are you not planning on having a radio anymore?

Actually this will be going above the radio. I'm integrating it with my radio so I can play audio and video on my radio from the nexus. Then its just splicing and adding a new hidden cig lighter for switched power to the tablet and running the a/v cables to the radio and I'm done.

Progress pictures to come

Im surprised you can fit the tablet with your actual radio. My tablet acts as the head unit in my car but i needed an amp so it could drive the speakers.

Ya I just did the first test fit and I have about a half inch gap between the bottom of the tablet and the top of my double din. I had originally cut the middle divider out b/c I had to when I put my nook in there and the nexus is a similar size, however it seems like it would have fit perfectly with the divider still there

Sweet. I plan on doing the same thing with the Nexus 7 2012. Are using Timur's kernel for USB audio?

I plan on using one of these cheap double dins as a bezel to mold into the celica console. That way you have a stating point and the Nexus 7 fits nearly perfectly into a double din opening. I would just have to cut an opening to fit and smooth out the edges. I will be leaving mine in a fixed installation so that makes things a little simpler.

You should also mold in the side tabs on your double din so it all flows nicer an look way better

I completely scrapped this one and I'm currently working on another one. I bought stronger magnets and tested them out doing about 35 and stomping on the brakes and the tablet didn't move a bit. I'm in the middle of finals week so I will not be doing any work on the new one but will keep this thread updated as I go.

Amazing. I wish I had the skills for something like that. Mega props to you!

FYI, if the magnets you are using are strong, I wouldn't rely on a navigations app you may run on the tablet. Magnetic north may not be where you think! ;)

Ya. I already thought about that. I don't use navigation all that often anyway but when I do, I use my iPhone so it's not a big deal. I did it mainly for the obd scanner and audio/video options.

I plan on painting the final product in the next week or so and then will add a write up to this thread. It's really easy to work with. This is only the second or third thing I've used fiberglass for
