My car gets obscene levels of 60ft crunching launch on it's current set up...so naturally, when a MK6 Golf GTi is next to me at 3am at the light...of course I'm gonna go for it :

Problem is, after my blistering launch...bang! clunk clunk clunk....I put it in neutral and coasted to a stop. Checked under the hood. The short shaft looks ok. Couldn't see much of the longer on, but I did see tranny fluid all over the rear engine mount. I couldn't push the car much more than a couple of feet before it kinda locked up, or I just need to be stronger? I dunno.

Either way, I took a cab back home and will be getting it towed in the morning.

Anybody want to place bets as to what it will be? I'm hoping/expecting driveshaft damage and a (hopefully) simple replacement for my spare one.

Yeah, so I pulled the driveshafts yesterday (in the rain!) and I was sad to see that they were completely fine. The splines inside the diff looked fine also. I put them back in, did another few test turns (both wheels in the air) and it turns smoothly up to a point and then randomly struggles to get past one 'area' of rotation, and I can also hear not quite a clunk, but like....let's say it sounds like turning a motor by hand with a loose timing chain into a bundle and then all of a sudden, it 'releases' and the smooth turning comes back and you can hear the chain dropping.....ok that didn't make any sense at all :

But yeah, whatever it is, the sound comes from inside the tranny kinda like just inside the bell housing where the shift fork/input shaft lives. I'll pull the tranny on Thursday if I can get the time off work.

This sucks though. The tranny has only around 2200 miles on it since being rebuilt and the vast majority of those have been with me driving around babying the car. Is there no way to prevent this again in future? It's gonna suck knowing in the back of my mind that I built this thing to be the fastest N/A Celica around and have amazing grip...but I will have to 'hold back' every time I want to race.

FWIW I did a timed 0-60 run with lift a couple of times this weekend (untuned all over the big cam, just very conservative) and got around 4.5 seconds both times.

Honestly not sure what to say to her man! I told her 'ahhh it's just a driveshaft' over the weekend and she was a bit dubious like "hmmm....well, I hope this doesn't push back the wedding yet again...". I don't blame her for hating the car. I still love it though.

I think I'm going to play the tactic of "I think I'm going to teardown the transmission, just to 'check' that nothing else got hurt" and then umm...buy a cheaper ring I suppose :

Aiming to pull the tranny on Thursday and think hard/speak to Gravel/Joe about how hard it would be to DIY rebuild it. If I'm going to be breaking trannys every couple thousand miles, I'm probably going to need to learn how to fix them again. I suppose a visual inspection is needed first though.

Never let her see the post about buying a cheaper ring...

...and definitely never buy a cheaper ring. :chuckles:

I'd personally try to get another transmission at this point and keep the old one to practice on if the finances allow.

My money is on the output shaft. Whatever the problem winds up being it'll require a rebuild of some sort. I would suggest cryotreating the tranny internals if you go that route. It's been so far so good for me.

E153 time?

While your speaking to your clergy about marriage ceremony, see if he does exorcisms.

Hehe yeah no, I had a chat with her about it and she's behind me on this. She's awesome man. She said that she doesn't want to get married until I obtain my 12 second time slip :headbang: Thank goodness. Although the sensible option would be to drop in the C60 that's about 2 metres away from my car on the driveway (don't ask), I would prefer a shorter ratio box to really drive that 4th gear to the finish line.

:chuckles: that made me giggle.

Problem with E153 is that the ratios are too long for what I want (may as well use the stock C60 I have and then break that too) and it costs way for for the parts etc. That and the fact that I'd feel like it's rude not to buy a Smaay big boy turbo system. So out of love for stating N/A to the core...I can't run an E153 :

i bet you shredded the teeth on the ring gear.
I'm going to go with differential problem as well.
Damn that's pretty unanimous....fingers crossed it's not the ring gear. That thing was uber expensive and another one will be the same. Perhaps this time I might get the straight cut version and make myself believe that the whine makes it a lot stronger by way of awesome.

I removed the trans yesterday. Couldn't really open it due to lack of tools and know-how, so I dropped it off to a local transmission specialist to tear it down and find the fault. He said they'll look at it early next week. For now, I've done my part. I'll minimise downtime now with it being at the shop ready for next week. I'm going to Ibiza tomorrow for a week whoop whoop :headbang: hopefully that'll ease the pain of how much I'm likely to spend on my return.

Updates to follow in a fortnight

It sure sounds like a busted differential, either the ring gear or the actual differential itself. I've seen some broken LSD's and broken stock open diffs on other platforms that behaved similarly.

Update

Ok so I just got off the phone from the transmission shop (the first shop messed me around and didn't touch it for a week, so I took it elsewhere) and they've stripped it down. The guy was like wow, what the hell did you do to it...the pinion gear is totally fvcked and shredded to hell, as is the output shaft.

I kinda expected it....well sort of. I have always been under the impression that I had a forged Jubu final drive...this will make you guys laugh... :

So I originally bought a kaaz 4.8 FD in autumn 2010 before the engine vvt gear exploded and prompted the 2.0 build. I later changed my mind and bought a jubu 5.0 semi helical final drive but i sold the kaaz 4.8. At this point, both units were with my engine builder (the damn place that took 2.5 years to eventually ruin the engine anyway). I asked him to ship out the kaaz 4.8 to the buyer....lol, anyone care to guess which one he actually ended up sending out and which one found it's way into my transmission?? so yeah...FML

I've just gotten off the phone to Jubu and made a bank transfer payment for a shiney 5.0 semi helical final drive. It's much stronger than the kaaz and bigger also of course which is a huge plus. It's funny that I always said "this semi helical final drive really drives like a silent oem unit" :chuckles: ahem, ahhh i just have to smile somehow and not get annoyed....i just want this damn thing to zoom down the track, give me a 12 second pass and then i'll let it sleep under a car cover and bring it out once a year or something. Buying the Jubu final drive just now was very painfully expensive.

SO yeah, hopefully I'll have the new final drive and shaft by the end of this week, I'll drop it off to the shop by the weekend and fingers crossed i'll be reassembling the transmission back into the car the following weekend...well, that's the plan anyway.

Congratulations on joining the club http://www.newcelica.org/forums/showthread.php?t=339055 . (Not really) :sadpace:

I would strongly suggest you take all reasonable and affordable precautions before you have it rebuilt. I decided on cryo-treating every last internal part of the c60 that could be cryo-treated and it's given me a little more comfort.

lol yeah no, I read your thread a little while ago...I half considered doing the work myself, but i figured it would take me too long (that and the fact that I was too scared : ). Do you do much drag launching on yours now?

I went to the shop today and had a look....fml....goodbye Kaaz 4.8 final drive :chuckles:

As much as I'd like to have the parts cyro'd, I don't have the time. I want to make a drag strip event on 12th October and I still am yet to tune the big cam on my motor, so time is of the essence.

Hopefully my Jubu unit will arrive asap this coming week and then then shop will be able to have the rebuilt tranny ready for me to fit next weekend.
