Removing drive shafts? Tranny?

I'm almost done dropping my tranny using the repair manual's directions, I can't seem to remove the drive shafts easily. Whats the best way to approach this? Do I really need any of the SST's?

why go through all that work to get the axles out just remove the axle nuts and the 3 bottom bolts on the lower control arm. should be one bolt and 2 nuts as i remember correctly then pull the lower control arm down and pull the brake rotor and knuckle towards you as the axle will slide out of the knuckle maybe with some hammer persuasion once out of the knuckle use a pry bar on the metal ring for the drivers side tranny using a snapping effect to pop the snap ring out of the tranny then it should slide right out. As for the passenger side do the same thing except just un bolt the housing that bolts to the back of the motor and the axle will slide out without any prying at all.
